A week ago Bruno Mars’ second album was released. The album became the fastest selling solo album of 2012, and quickly received lots of acclaim, positive and negative. A.V. Club rated it a C+, the Guardian was a little bit more lenient and granted it three stars. During all critiques though, nobody questioned Mars’s professionalism, except for one artist. hey @ brunomars ! seriously ? — breakbot (@breakbot) December 13, 2012 Two days after the release of ‘Unorthodox Jukebox’ , French producer [...]

This year’s Grammy nominations really got the people going. As nominations are always a guarantee for discussion, these year’s excluded artists especially turned some heads. Six nominations for Frank Ocean , but no Bieber and no 1D. Is Twitter angry? second....this time there wont be any wise words, no excuses, I just plain DISAGREE. The kid deserved it. Grammy board u blew it on this one — Scooter Braun (@scooterbraun) December 6, 2012 [...]

'Unapologetic' is the seventh Rihanna -album in seven years. An average not many artists can keep up with. The question remains however if the quantity isn’t getting in the quality’s way. Pitchfork rated it a 4.5. The Guardian calls Rihanna praising her abusive partner “a deeply disturbing listen”. I wonder if @ rihanna is unapologetic about how bad her new album is. — Korey (@koreykuhl) November 19, 2012 Youtube vlogger Korey Kuhl seems to join the bad acclaim, by [...]

Some artists are using Twitter as a medium to broaden their reach and to manifest themselves, some artists aren’t. Tyler, the Creator’s account is @fucktyler , his background is a unicorn on a bonfire and he tweets in capitals about everything but his own music. But does this mean he isn’t manifesting himself? I’ll divide Tyler’s tweets in two types. The first is tweets about ‘something’. He provides us with his opinion on new music or on other artists. He timidly admits he likes Rihanna’s new album, he declares his love for Nicki Minaj and he tells [...]

Who the hell is Captain Murphy ? A question that a lot of people are asking these days, especially since the so called ‘mystery rapper’ released the track Between Friends with Flying Lotus and Earl Sweatshirt . One could think Twitter would provide some identity info, but he or she would be disappointed. Stop bothering other muhfuckers About my identity. Just listen to the music. Tyler isn't the only person with a deep voice. fucking idiots — Captain Murphy (@xCaptainMurphyx) October 17, 2012 [...]
The latest from PBS Off Book : Color is one of the fundamental elements of our existence, and defines our world in such deep ways that its effects are nearly imperceptible. It intersects the worlds of art, psychology, culture, and more, creating meaning and influencing behavior every step of the way. Most fascinating are the choices we make, both subconsciously and consciously, to use color to impact each other and reflect our internal states. Whether in the micro-sense with the choice of an article of clothing, or the macro-sense where cultures on the whole embrace color [...]

Anthony Bourdain's new PBS show, The Mind of a Chef , drops Nov. 9. It looks like the entire first season will focus on Momofuku mastermind David Chang and the process behind his cooking. It's almost like a long-form documentary. If this is just the first season then I hope there are others with a similar deep dive into the life of various chefs' cooking process. I could think of 20 chefs off the top of my head I would love to see featured. [via bourdain ]

PBS Off Book continues to roll on with another great segment. The video game industry is now bigger than Hollywood, with hundreds of millions of dollars spent developing these interactive experiences. But there are also small-scale developers working in the indie game realm, creating unique and experimental video games without the budgets of the larger "AAA" games. These indie game developers devote time, money, and take great risks in a quest to realize their creative vision. They deftly balance game mechanics & systems, sound & visuals, and an immersive storytelling experience to push the gaming medium [...]
The latest from PBS Off Book : "The explosion of the internet over the past 20 years has led to the development of one of the newest creative mediums: the website. Web designers have adapted through the technological developments of html, CSS, Flash, and JavaScript, and have mastered the balance between creativity and usability. Now with the advance of mobile, the greatest websites have taken user experience and responsive design to the next level, and continue our evolution from print to a digital world." The latest from PBS Off Book looks at the art of animation: Animation has been captivating audiences for more than a hundred years. From classic forms like hand drawn and stop-motion, to cutting-edge techniques like motion graphics and CGI, animation has a long history of creating style and poetry unachievable through live action filmmaking. It is a tool for educating, a place for experimentation and play, and a way of telling personal stories that reach the viewer with powerful visual metaphors. Featuring the talents of: John Canemaker , [...]

A few months back, Christine Mitchell sent out an email asking people to contribute recipes that she would illustrate for her wonderful site, N'East Style . I must have been excited about it at the time as I was the first the respond. Works for me. See the Cold Splinters Peanut Butter and Pasta recipe over at NES . Hope y'all had a great weekend.
PBS Digital Studios and Melodysheep have teamed up once again ( Mr. Rogers and Bob Ross , previously) to remix yet another public broadcasting icon. Julia Child would have turned 100 on August 15, 2012. This video, which is considerably better than Sweet Julia Child O'Mine , “celebrates her wisdom, wit & superb kitchen skills”.
Teenagers, brace yourselves: PBS has made a video about dubstep, which means it's only a matter of time before your parents start asking questions about those electric can opener noises invading the house via your bedroom. In a new Idea Channel clip, host Mike Rugnetta asks whether the genre - which, despite breaking through to the American mainstream, isn't exactly a critical favorite - can actually be defended as avant-garde musical genius, comparing it to such 20th-century forerunners to electronic music as musique concrète and George Antheil's Ballet Mécanique . Rugnetta also mentions [...]
PBS Off Book continues its deep-dive into Internet arts culture. This time, they examine the ins-and-outs of the Internet's lifeblood. “Viral Video” is the signature phenomenon of internet media. Something akin to pop songs, these videos with irresistible hooks have saturated video culture online and have now evolved into a multitude of sophisticated forms. Whether rooted in comedy, spectacle, schadenfreude, cuteness, politics, performance, or deep meaning, the idea of viral videos, and the huge audiences they generate, have forever changed the values and potential impact of video online.

PBS and video mashup ninja John D. Boswell, aka melodysheep , follow up their Mister Rogers masterpiece with a shout out to the greatest painter of the 20th Century's second-half.
PBS Off Book 's latest installment tackles a company's visual representation. Logos surround us in digital and physical space, but we rarely examine the thought and artistic thinking that goes into the design of these symbols. Utilizing a silent vocabulary of colors, shapes, and typography, logo designers give a visual identity to companies and organizations of all types. From cave painters to modern designers, artists throughout history have been reducing the complex down to simple ideas that communicate with the world. This just continues to be my favorite thing on the Internet. [...]
