PenDragon - DRAG Vs. LMS (Team Arson MSX/GRP) LMS was a hip hop group in Baltimore in the mid-'90s that I've mentioned on here a couple times this year, first when DJ Booman picked their song "Pure Necessities" for my summer jam piece in the City Paper, and then when reviewing a new mixtape by former LMS member Forbidden . And apparently the prolific PenDragon, who's put out several kind of small experimental projects in the last year or two, like a mixtape created in 24 hours and a EP of [...]

various artists - Baltimore Beat Bangers, Vol. 1 (Wisdom Court Ent.) I was very interested to hear about this project, basically an all-star instrumental mixtape full of beats from some of Baltimore's best rap producers, because it's just kind of unprecedented in this scene. Obviously producers are always passing around CDs of beats looking to work with MCs, but other than a couple instrumental albums I've gotten from Ron Rico and Me'Aze Millioni they don't seem very commonplace, certainly not a compilation full of beats by different producers like Imahj [...]
PenDragon - "BMF Freestyle (Baltimore MuFucka)" (mp3) Right now everyone's rapping over the beat from the new Rick Ross single, Baltimore included, and so far I've heard Mullyman and Rickie Jacobs on this track too. But my favorite is from Drag, who flipped the Big Meech line to reference legendary Baltimore hustlers like Peanut King and Melvin Williams (shout out to D. Billz from the Nah Right comments section , who was I think the first person with that idea). Drag's new mixtape Style For Free is out now, but I haven't had [...]
This week is the Baltimore City Paper's annual 'Sizzlin' Summer' issue, and I wrote a fun piece that's kind of a playlist of local summer jams . I talked to folks like DJ Booman, E Major, Shaka Pitts, PenDragon, Kane Mayfield and members of Kadman, Jumpcuts, Rapdragons, the Art Department, the Cameron Blake Band and the Out Of Your Head Collective, and they picked songs by Wye Oak, LMS, Skarr Akbar, the Annexx Click, Junkers, the Get Em Mamis, Rhinovirus, Billie Holiday, Celebration, Sri Aurobindo and Brown F.I.S.H. We've even got a player on the CP site where you [...]
PenDragon - 24 (Team Arson) PenDragon isn't the first rapper to make a mixtape in one day -- not even the first in Maryland since Kojo has done it a couple times -- but one thing I like about the way he did it is the spirit of spontaneity. He got the idea on a Thursday and executed it that Saturday, no planning or writing ahead of time and getting a whole finished product mixed down in the space of 24 hours. Of course, it's only 37 minutes long and has a [...]
Street Heat - Found Nowhere! (Team Arson Music Group) I've never posted about a Street Heat solo release here before, but I've posted a fair amount about other projects from his label, Team Arson, especially stuff by his labelmate PenDragon, who appears on here. Street Heat is mainly known as a producer, and has placed a lot of beats on records by Jim Jones and his affiliates. And probably the first thing I'd say about this record is that it's probably not what you'd expect from a guy named Street Heat who works with [...]
PenDragon - HomeRun King (Team Arson) I talk to PenDragon pretty often and always check for his music, but between having a baby and everything else that's been going on, I've been really slow to catch up on this mixtape he released on his site over the summer. I mean, the mixtape has a baseball theme and here I am posting about it after baseball season, and after Drag dropped another mixtape, 24 , in the past couple weeks, so I gotta claim a late pass. Anyway, it's got his [...]
Articulate - #musicmonday (please RT) the mixtape Articulate's really been one of the growing number of MCs in Baltimore that's really using the internet well to get his music out there on a really frequent basis, so it's apt that he's the first rapper I've heard of to do a Twitter-themed mixtape (Soulja Boy did one, too, but Artic beat him to the punch by a couple weeks). Don't get me wrong, I hate Twitter and think it's the lamest web 2.0 trend ever, I'm just saying it's shrewd of him. I'm still [...]
PenDragon - "I'm The Ish (Remix)" (mp3) Mullyman - "I'm The Ish (wiRemix)" (mp3) There's nothing new about people doing their own version of DJ Class's "I'm The Ish" at this point, but it's kind of cool to see the song kind of go through this backwards path, where now other Baltimore artists are really jumping on it after we already heard people of Kanye West or Lil Jon's stature on the track. PenDragon sent me his version, as a preview of his HomeRun King mixtape [...]
PenDragon " Heavy...Wait ": Wow - " call it Asher Roth, sell it to the college kids "; that's one of the things that me and my niggas bugged out about in The Wire , with all the different names for that raw. I hate referencing The Wire when I speak about Bmore MCs. I apologize. Pen hit me up, of a recommend from Artic , and I'm glad he did. This is some late night whip bangin' shit. Watch out for dude? I would.

This is PenDragon's new video, "Beat It Up" featuring J. Killa, which I think is pretty cool, and impressive that they apparently shot it in 10 minutes. You can download his new mixtape at dragwroteit.blogspot.com/ , I haven't gotten around to putting together a post about it yet but I wanted to post the video.

Gov't Names 5th Anniversary Retrospective Pt. 4
Jeff made a suggestion in the comments box for one of these posts the other day that I should do a 5th anniversary show, too. I wish I had the time or energy for it, but these days I really don't. Maybe next year, maybe I'll hang in there for a 10th anniversary, really hard to say what the future of the site holds, although I could easily see myself trucking along for years and years. Anyway, more songs: 61. Mullyman f/ JI-900 - "Realest To Run It" (mp3) - [...]
Uscite discografiche (27 febbraio 2009)

Some stray news items and links: - Above is a new YouTube interview with Blaq Starr. - Illroots.com has recently ran posts about PenDragon and Mania Music Group's Ron G. - On my other blog Narrowcast , I listed the best shows I saw in 2008, which included performances by Soul Cannon, K-Swift, Blaq Starr, Dru Hill, Diablo, Rod Lee, Mullyman, Skarr Akbar, Comp, Little Clayway, Teop, Heavy Gold, 1st Family and Huli Shallone. - Recent reviews by some of my colleagues at [...]
