What's there to say about The Irrepressibles that hasn't been said already? Quite a lot, actually, since there are nowhere near enough people talking about them. Fitting somewhere in between Antony And The Johnsons and Perfume Genius , their music is hauntingly affecting, conjuring sparse atmospheres that are populated with hope, joy, sorrow, contemplation, and solitude. Further proof/convincing can be found in "Arrow" and "Tear" . All of [...]
Watch Perfume Genius ' session at La Blogotheque , in which he performs "Hood" , "Norma Song" and "Dark Part" from his sophomore album "Put Your Back N 2 It" , out now. Perfume Genius ' "Put Your Back N 2 It" is a fantastic album . We placed his debut album, "Learning" , high on our Best of 2010 list, and his latest effort is due to follow suit unless we have the best year in music in many, [...]
When your album ends up on LBYB's top 31 albums of the year list, it changes a person. Perfume Genius ' album dropped in at number 11 and I just hope that he's doing alright with the new-found fame and attention that kind of acclaim brings to an artist. His debut album is immense and earth-shattering, in the same way that Sleigh Bells ' album is, but both at completely opposite sides of the musical rainbow (I like Rainbows.....does the word Rainbow get capitalised?). For Yours Truly a couple of months back (but only [...]
As I said a couple of days ago , Perfume Genius has one of the standout albums of the year, the only downside being that his songs are too damn short....I find myself just longing them to continue for another six minutes only to be let down every time. This new video for "Lookout, Lookout" is fairly simple; him in a motel room, then outside the motel and hanging around, and then generally just having tall hair. Sometimes We Run For Cover
End of last week the PERFUME GENIUS was added to the list of many who've covered the MADGE's mp3 OH FATHER. This weekender the he-popper gives us his haunting rendition of THE BELLS OF ST MARY , a toon originally unleashed almost a century ago, but best known to your ears via the BILL CROSBY's 1945 reinterpretation.
Over A Cup Of Coffee
One of my most inspiring interviews to date would have to be last week's cup of coffee session with the PERFUME GENIUS . Watch as the Seattle-based he-singer opens up about his drug and alcohol addiction, his music, songwriting, performing live, album number three, the REM (and MICHAEL STIPE), music piracy, plus more. It's all quite moving, maintains a light-hearted tone, and one of my many highlights is his reaction to when I tell him that his recent video, HOOD, feels like a gay modern-day re-interpretation of the NATALIE IMBRUGLIA's TORN video.

[video] Perfume Genius // Hood
Tweet vaso link So apparently this video is causing a bit of uproar because of its depiction of a homosexual couple or for "not promoting family values;" I'm not certain how it's controversial in the slightest, since the majority of videos with members of the opposite sex involved with each other are far more inappropriate/immoral than the tenderness shown in Perfume Genius' "Hood." But really, what's more important is this: how great is this song? At just under two minutes, I feel like it's [...]

Watch: Perfume Genius covers Neil Young’s “Helpless”
I had the opportunity to see Mike Hadreas, aka Perfume Genius, perform in Chicago the other month, and over those 35 minutes, he stole our breaths with haunting ballads from his remarkably strong debut, Learning . What we didn't get were any covers, such as the poignant Crosby, Stills, Nash and most notably Young's "Helpless" (via Prefix ). Hadreas' doubtful warble rests nicely over the simplicity of Young's walk down memory lane, and also insinuates the potential for Hadreas to really grow as a songwriter in the coming years.
