Though their name takes a cue from Game of Thrones , there's nothing medieval about Greyjoy . The Perth duo - comprised of Karlin Courtney and Matt Crockett - doesn't look much farther back than the 80s for inspiration, combining shimmering synths, Phoenix-like vocals and DIY production to whip up an entrancing brand of dream-pop. Case in point is their latest track "Idle Thoughts," which tosses a groovy bass line into the mix for good measure. Stream it below. MP3: Greyjoy - "Idle Thoughts"

Following up on the announcement that the band will perform at this year's sold out Splendour in the Grass and Spin Off festivals PASSION PIT have confirmed that they will be playing their own headline shows around Australia and New Zealand. PASSION PIT are fresh off the back of dual weekend performance's at Coachella and were widely regarded as one of the best performances of the event. The LA Times claimed that ‘the band’s main stage set had the largest crowd of any Saturday afternoon’ while The Examiner stated that ‘ Passion Pit ’s live show [...]

In case the obvious wasn’t apparent enough - yes, Greyjoy is a Game of Thrones reference. These Perth guys aren’t just a bunch of tv-gruffs though. Their sound is a lot more interesting than horsemeat consumption, the plague or the gratuitous bad sex offered by said reference, so you should probably listen up. A project between Karlin Courtney and Matt Crocket, Greyjoy came around somewhere in between meeting through friends and purchasing a Juno 6 two years ago. Greyjoy definitely have a ‘Sydney’ sound going on. The interwebs makes the state by [...]

Hidden Shoal Recordings is excited to announce the release of ‘ Head In The Sand ’ by Craig Hallsworth-led West Australian outfit Tangled Star . The track is the first single to be taken from their forthcoming album Let’s Adjourn To The Garden (18th June 2013). The track is available now for free download from the Hidden Shoal Store . ‘Head In The Sand’ streamlines Tangled Star’s inimitable hooks and melodic turns into an immediately addictive and electric slice of slow burn power-pop. The glowing roar of overdriven guitars combined with the song’s endearingly [...]

You might best remember Nick Bertke, a.k.a. Pogo, from 2007 when he bestowed his "Alice in Wonderland" trip-hop unto YouTube, which has accumulated more than 11 million views to date. Now the Perth-based electronic artist delivers a trippy SquareBob SpongeMix for fans of the kid who lives below sea level in a pineapple. Enjoy. h/t Waxy Follow @BrianAbrams

Apricot Rail's utterly beautiful sophomore album Quarrels has been starting to stir up some US radio love of late, recently featuring in a number of college radio Top 302s. The album's most recent chart entry at Radio 1190 in Denver saw it hold the number 4 spot! Yet another example of independent radio understanding music outside of the obvious and constrained. If you've not yet given your ears and mind the treasures that Quarrels holds then here's a path to happiness for you - download the free [...]

Now there’s no point in lying, I straight up do not like football, or any sports for that matter - Insert questioning into the level of my ‘strayan-ness here - The difference between myself and others who find themselves anti-sports inclined is that I can very much appreciate the passion many have for the game. So instead of posting a clever and wholly original Facebook status on grand final day (something along the lines of “yay football”) I just prefer to leave you all to your own devices. On the topic of [...]

Daughter - Perth (Bon Iver) v Ready for the Floor (Hot Chip) My love for a cover is well documented, my love for two covers stuck together is unparalleled, also, Daughter. Performed on Zane Lowe's Radio 1 show a couple of weeks ago and pretty much as close to perfect as you can get.
I love to hear new music from Perth, Australia, which is like a second home to me since my family moved there last year. Apricot Rail plays the type of soft/loud instrumental post-rock that I don’t hear enough anymore (short of Explosions in the Sky ). The band’s new single “Basket Press” is a superb track featuring lovely woodwinds and a powerful, building climax. Apricot Rail’s sophomore album Quarrels is out now on Hidden Shoal .

Mei Saraswati | dash Savoir’s ‘ Zinli Rhythm ’ still holds up as my standout track of 2013 to date. It felt special at the time and still does. I’m holding my breath to see what James Ireland and Andrew Sinclair come up with next. But Ireland and Sinclair needn’t get all the credit. Singing on ‘Zinli Rhythm’ is Mei Swan, who records under the Mei Saraswati name. Her Soundcloud’s a wonderful mix of off-cuts, remixes and covers. But ‘ dash ’, which you’d hope [...]
Australasia's exuding an incontrovertible musical quality at the minute, and as we flit from Sydney's We Are The Brave back to Perth four-piece Braves it becomes pretty apparent that there's so too an estimable heterogeneity mucked into the mêlée. Hallows may remain their trump thus far played, though their latest – the arrestingly jaunty Heartslur II – will at least have your vital organs pining for further parts as the precocious scamps murmur opaquely of afternoons wasted away "out by the grass" atop guitars that emulate that unfeasibly fresh scent of newly mown lawn. [...]

Dolly Doctor quiz time, GRRL PAL . 'W hat does your band name really say about you?' Bands who have a strong disposition for removing vowels in titles should be approached with relative to high caution. Most of the time. Grammatical farts are all the rage, y'know. If we're talking the symbolic clusterfck of the current music rainbow (△△△), then these guys should sound reasonably accessible. GRRL PAL are a new three piece from B̶r̶o̶o̶k̶l̶y̶n̶ Perth. Only 55 people vibing on these guys on Facebook right now. Babies, really. Digits like those don't [...]

This week, London three-piece Daughter released their mesmeric debut album, If You Leave . To celebrate, the trio popped in to BBC Radio 1 on Wednesday night to perform a jaw-dropping session excusively for Zane Lowe. It included this: a gorgeous, slow-burning mix up of Bon Iver's 'Perth' and Hot Chip's 'Ready For The Floor'. Although completely contrasting in their original formats, the group transform them into one continous torch song. Utterly, utterly beautiful. Listen and download below. I've never been to the Amazon, but I imagine if I was for some reason trekking through the wilderness in South America, and I was fortunate enough to stumble across one of those crazy jungle parties everyone wants to host, I would request 'Amazon', by Perth group GRRL PAL and kick back sipping on my Ayahuasca daiquiri. Daniel & Jay make up the duo, calling upon Jacob when they make a live appearance. 'Amazon' was apparently " inspired by an episode of Futurama, where they get stuck on an planet with a tribe of lonely giant Women [...]

Some things you just wouldn't expect... like when Daughter recently visited BBC Radio One and stunned everyone with a mash-up of Bon Iver 's "Perth" and Hot Chip 's "Ready for the Floor . " I know, enough said... you can pick your jaw up off the floor now. Have a listen below and leave comments. I'd like to know what you think! This week also saw the release of Daughter 's debut album, If You Leave [...]

The lovely Ken McGuire has featured two Hidden Shoal artists over the last week on his Listening Post blog. The first single taken from the forthcoming I Razor soundtrack, Circus Devils 'All The Good Ones Are Gone', was given a lovely little write up , followed by love for the Apricot Rail track 'Running With an Egg on a Spoon' and their new album Quarrels . "Piano intros always get me. So too has All The Good Ones Are Gone the latest single release from Circus Devils, led [...]

I first wrote about Perth's Gunns in December, 2011 . I still can't quite figure out why they haven't been shot into stardom just quite yet, but hell, I they deserve it. Things have evolved a little at the Gunns camp, now a quartet, sporting Jennifer Aslett ( Hootenanny ), Michael Jelinek, Cameron Avery and Clinton Oliver (all three also play in The Growl ). After taking a short break in between releases, Gunns are back, holding a 73 titled Leaving Home . It's beach, fuzz and garage rolled into one, take off with the title [...]

The most in demand band in the world right now ALT-J have just announced another, yes ANOTHER Australian Tour making it their third tour here in the past 9 months. The British boys will be back in July to play their largest shows to date and their first show ever in our lovely Perth, so Perth-ians get on this! ALT-J obviously love Australia and that love is definitely mutual, as the Mercury Prize winners have received such a wide fan base after the release of their debut [...]
