In a profile of the chamber sextet yMusic that was published in today's New York Times , it's revealed that the group participated in a recording session with Trey Anastasio . Trey's new solo album, expected this fall, also contains contributions from members of the National and Mates of State as well as Anastasio's solo band. Noted producer Peter Katis is co-producing the album with Big Red, which was recorded at Katis's Tarquin Studios in Bridgeport, Conn.

Peter Katis is the production mastermind behind The National's flawless 2007 album, Boxer , and he contributed some production to 20102s High Violet. Even casual readers of ATG are aware of my unending obsession with the inventively glum quintet, which in turn makes me a big fan of Katis. Turns out, Matt Berninger and co. are even bigger fans, dedicating Boxer 's album cover to Katis (the above photo is of the band performing "The Geese of Beverly Road" at Katis' wedding). [...]

To update a story we first reported in September , Phish guitarist/vocalist Trey Anastasio has just entered the studio with acclaimed producer Peter Katis (Interpol, Fanfarlo, Frightened Rabbit) to work on a new solo album. According to Katis, Trey is setting out to do "something totally out of left-field for him." While it isn't known whether this album, which is due out next year according to Katis's management firm , will feature all of the members of his current TAB septet, Natalie Cressman revealed on Twitter that she will be taking part in the [...]

Back in March of 2010, we debuted our Tracks of the Trade column in which HT's Ryan Dembinsky speaks with producers and engineers within the music industry about their roles in the creative process. For the first Tracks of the Trade column, Ryan spoke with producer Peter Katis , who has collaborated on countless modern classics by the likes of the National, Frightened Rabbit, Interpol, Fanfarlo, Tokyo Police Club, Jonsi (Sigur Ros), and The Get Up Kids. One of Katis's next projects will be working with none other than Phish front man Trey Anastasio . [...]

It's been six months and thousands of miles of touring since "Scott vs. the Volcano" — a battle that the volcano won but that did little to take the fight out of Scott Hutchison and his bandmates in Frightened Rabbit . The Scottish quintet was one of several bands marooned in European airports last April thanks to Eyjafjallajökull, the impertinent Icelandic volcano that spewed ash, paralyzed air travel and prevented several acts from making their appointed rounds at the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival. "You saw the video on YouTube of guy shouting 'I hate [...]

Last couple of years, seems nary a week has passed in which we didn't have the occasion to mention, or more often than not, praise the work of Peter Katis. Well, after lending his ear to a slew of high-quality releases from the likes of The National, Interpol, Mates of State and The Twilight Sad, Katis has decided to get the band back together, the band in this case being The Philistines Jr. , a unit that also features brother Tarquin and Mice Parade drummer Adam Pierce. Never heard of The Philistines Jr.? [...]

It will make a sound. The Philistines Jr. are an indie-pop threesome from Connecticut whose members include super producer Peter Katis ( Interpol, the National, Jónsi, and Frightened Rabbit ), his brother Tarquin and Adam Pierce (who runs FatCat USA and plays drums in Mice Parade ). October 19th will see the band release an album called If a Band Plays in the Woods…? along with an album of covers and remixes ( If A Lot Of Bands Play In The Woods...? ) from their impressive list of friends ( the National, Jónsi, Tokyo [...]

The New Classics is a reoccurring segment in which we examine our favorite indie releases that are bound to replace our parent's "classic rock" stash hidden in the attic or the basement. These aren't reviews, these are uneditied testimonies and opinions about why we love what we love. Can we get a witness? Most of us find it hard to hear new music without comparing it to something we're already familiar with. "This really reminds me of [insert awesome band whose obscurity makes you ultra-hip here]." I'd like to avoid this syndrome but I can't seem to, so why don't I just list some artists that came to mind while listening through If a Band Plays in the Woods... by Philistines Jr.: They Might Be Giants, The Flaming Lips, Eels, The Cure, Aphex Twin, Kraftwerk, Joy Division, Failure, Sigur Ros, Polyphonic Spree, New Order, Dntel, and more that I couldn't quite [...]

John Peel, B.B.C. 1 (regarding The Philistines - Greenwich, CT LP) " ...so interesting, such a good LP...a band I think you'll want to hear more from, frankly. I spent the first half of this week locked-up at The Ranch Recording Studios in Southampton recording my band's first EP (more news on that coming soon), but despite this minor pre-occupation taking up twenty four hours of my last three days - what filtered through the blogs and news services in terms of new music certainly didn't pass me by. Monday saw the fantastic announcement from Reading Festival organisers that Surfer Blood , Girls and Wild Beasts were to be added to the already improved 2010 line-up; one which has already seen [...]

Today, we're kicking off a new column of occasional periodicity here at Hidden Track called Tracks of the Trade , whereby we swap stories with some of the more interesting, yet elusive, folks in the music industry, the producers. These folks are the sonic equivalent of surgeons; charged not only with the careful dissection of dozens of tiny interactive pieces and ensuring their cohesive functionality, but also developing strong emotional bonds with their patients (often mental), offering varying degrees of bedside manner, and even sharing potentially critical advice. To kick off the series [...]
Anthemic rock music really has to soar to earn its name. To rouse an audience because they are already familiar with your work is one thing, but to come out anonymously and take a crowd by storm is the most blatant asset in this glossy depiction of "anthemic indie-rock". For a band like The Kissaway [...]
Photo by Lilja Birgisdóttir Most people with any knowledge of music have by now heard Icelandic band Sigur Rós, which means most people are well-acquainted with Jónsi Birgisson's fabulous falsetto through their Vonlenska/Hopelandic songs. Jónsi recently announced the release of his solo album Go in 2010, to be arranged by Nico Muhly (Björk, Grizzly Bear), produced by [...]

First came a side project from Sigur Rós frontman Jónsi Þór Birgisson and his partner Alex , called Riceboy Sleeps . Only six months later we're seeing the first glimpses of a solo album by Jónsi , simply called Go . The album will be release in 2010 via XL Recordings , the same label that Sigur Rós is signed to. On December [...]
