Lion Versus Back at The Fire Feb. 12

Lion Versus Back at The Fire Feb. 12 Lion Versus have been on a bit of a hiatus, but tonight the gang will be returning back to the stage at The Fire. Led by the sultry vocals and charming poetic verses of Hilary White, the 7-piece create a backdrop full of old world beauty for her bittersweet tales to play out before audiences. The multilayered tunes can transport you from the grit and grime of the noisy city to the tranquil, expansive stretches of the countryside which are moments that should be cherished. They'll be joined by local acoustic pop punk brother duo Corporate Hearts [...]

Best of The Deli Philly Poll - Top Performers: Break It Up

Best of The Deli Philly Poll - Top Performers: Break It Up Break It Up had an impressive debut year in 2011 by garnering a lot of local blog love from just their lone single Excavate , which manages to channel Sleater-Kinney style alt grrrl memories. Since that time, the trio featuring Jen Sperling (ex- Conversations with Enemies ), Dan Morse ( Wigwams ), and Casey Bell has delivered exciting live performances making them a new act dear to our hearts. They also laid down some most enjoyable sessions with the BITBY and The Key crews. The band is getting ready to kick off their 2012 by performing at The [...]

Best of The Deli Philly Poll - Top Performers: Lushlife

Best of The Deli Philly Poll - Top Performers: Lushlife South Philly's Rajesh Haldar a.k.a Lushlife has consistently proven why he is a force to be reckoned with in both the city's hip hop and indie scenes. Sure, plenty of hip hop artists rhyme over indie samples nowadays, but Lushlife's approach to this concept is what sets him apart. His music is so eclectic that everyone from hardcore hip hop heads to the hippest indie fans can find something to enjoy. The groundbreaking emcee/producer combines his raspy, Nas-influenced vocal delivery with the indie sounds of artists like Fleet Foxes, Brown Recluse , RYAT and Clams [...]

Power Animal Opening for This Will Destroy You, Mountains & Amen Dunes at FUC Feb. 10

Power Animal Opening for This Will Destroy You, Mountains & Amen Dunes at FUC Feb. 10 Northeast Philly's Power Animal a.k.a. Keith Hampson will be performing at the First Unitarian Church tonight. Though Hampson's project has gone through many changes in the past year or so, no longer surrounded by a percussive and strangely endearing gang of misfits. What still lies at the root of his music that you've grown to know and love along with the rest of us is the ingenious experimental production work by Hampson coupled with his speak-sing vocals that give an intimate insight into an artist constantly struggling to find a balance within himself and the world around [...]

New Video: "Radio" (Live) - Busses

New Video: "Radio" (Live) - Busses Below is a new song and video from Busses called "Radio." It was recorded at the previous session that produced their video "Liar" from last year. The footage was filmed and edited by Joshua Camerote, audio was recorded by Jason Sexton, and the mural installation was provided by Bonnie Brenda Scott. Scott Soden also helped out drummer Nick Apice with the trippy visual images. You can expect an EP release and plenty of live dates coming this spring from the band. Radio (live) from Busses

Best of The Deli Philly Poll - Top Performers: Psychic Teens

Best of The Deli Philly Poll - Top Performers: Psychic Teens For a band that's only a little over a year old, Psychic Teens is making a lot of headway in the local music scene. When we first discovered their debut tracks "YUNG" and "CbbK," it was no-brainer to feature them in our "What's This?" column. They then went on to win our Featured Artist(s) Poll in August (you can read our interview HERE ). The power trio (made up of guitarist/vocalist Larry Ragone, bassist Joe Decarolis, and drummer Dave Cherasaro) eventually released their 7-track debut LP, Teens , in October [...]

West Philadelphia Orchestra's Final Balkan Dance Party at Tritone Feb. 9

West Philadelphia Orchestra's Final Balkan Dance Party at Tritone Feb. 9 An era comes to a close tonight as Tritone hosts its final Balkan Dance Party tonight. And West Philadelphia Orchestra are sure to bring the house down when they end their nearly five year tradition of playing within the classic red-walled venue. WPO's monthly dance party will continue on at an as of now undisclosed venue (judging from a poll on their Facebook page it looks like Teri's in South Philly could be the frontrunner), and the band will likely be announcing where tonight. While the traditional Eastern European folk orchestra is enough of a big deal to [...]

Best of The Deli Philly Poll - Top Performers: The Extraordinaires

Best of The Deli Philly Poll - Top Performers: The Extraordinaires The Extraordinaires are arguably Philadelphia's most exciting nostalgia-core, acousto-pop Jamboree band. While their year may have been relatively slow in terms of musical output (one 3-song EP The Postcard ), the band was anything but quiet. As we have come to expect from The Extraordinaires, if there was a holiday approaching, the boys made sure to stop at nothing to perform outlandish and wholly invested theme shows. This included their Mr. Roger's-esque Holiday Revue , fully equipped with hung stockings, fake fires and many a special guest. Their Halloween extravaganza with The Deli was no less an [...]

Dr. Dog Performing on CONAN Tonight!

Dr. Dog Performing on CONAN Tonight! Philly's own Dr. Dog will be on CONAN tonight! They just dropped Be the Void yesterday - their best record yet. Team Coco has been really supportive so you can check out the album HERE for yourself. Congrats to the canine crew!

[album review] Dr. Dog / Be The Void

[album review] Dr. Dog / Be The Void Tweet vaso link Tympanogram Grade: B- Some bands opt to redefine their music on each release. There's the acoustic and sparse album followed by the electric and grandiose album. Or the "prog album" followed by the "folk album." Not Dr. Dog. The Philly rockers have been content to evolve their sound slowly and subtly, each consecutive album adding a bit of extra scenery to the musical view. Similarly, their fan base has grown slowly [...]
