Sasquatch! Friday: Vampire Weekend, Macklemore, Youth Lagoon, & More

Driving to the Sasquatch! Festival on Thursday I opted to skip out on I-90 from Seattle and instead drive way up north and take Route 2. It still gets you where you're going, but the traffic-congested two-and-a-half hour trip you get with 90 becomes an isolated six-hour journey if you choose Rt. 2. It's completely worth it considering what you get instead: over 100 miles of absolutely stunning forests. Bright spring weather shifts into snowy mountains, freight trains chug by, so long they seem to lack a beginning or end - the forest completely surrounds you. It's a real experience [...]

Review: Escort live at Music Hall of Williamsburg

Review: Escort live at Music Hall of Williamsburg Photos by G. Adeline Michele of Escort If you like disco or funky grooves, become a fan of Escort .  The 17 piece band (yes!) performed to a packed house at Music Hall of Williamsburg on May 24, 2013 and for an hour and a half, the venue was transformed into a giant dance floor.  All of Escort's songs make you groove and you'd swear these tracks were originally released in the 70s, yet they are Escort originals.  Escort has everything you'd want in a [...]

Happy Birthday, Lauryn Hill

Happy Birthday, Lauryn Hill Photo and autograph courtesy of the G Archives. Lauryn Hill - The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill Happy birthday to Ms. Lauryn Hill.  Over the years, I foolishly believed a lot of rumours about her that I heard on the internet and I judged her harshly without ever doing research to see if they were indeed true.  Turns out, the infamous "Lauryn Hill is racist" rumour is not true.   Is she a creative genius who, like so many creative geniuses is totally misunderstood by the public at [...]

Photos: The Ruckus goes to The Great Escape Part 1

Have you ever seen people dancing to folk pop holding cans of beer in a church aisle? Oh hey, Great Escape.  I really am quite fond of folk-pop lads (think Arcade Fire, Hey Rosetta!)  Eliza and the Bear , so much that I popped along to both of their shows at TGE. The first held in the ever so pitch black, Haunt, where I caught Friends last year and Kyla la Grange the year before. Later on in the Saturday evening I headed up towards Kemp Town into the church I saw Jethro Fox at last year, St [...]

PHOTOS: DAUGHTER + JEREMY MESSERSMITH @THE TROUBADOUR

PHOTOS: DAUGHTER + JEREMY MESSERSMITH @THE TROUBADOUR Photos and words by Scott Sheff On the first night of two sold-out shows at The Troubadour, British indie folk rockers Daughter gave the crowd a spectacular performance, and even got a little help in return from the fans. Throughout the night, the soft-spoken lead singer and guitarist Elena Tonra captivated the crowd with her sweet and soothing vocals, and lit up the room with her infectious smile. Many sang along, especially to “Youth.” Near the start of the song, she flubbed the lines and quickly dropped an f-bomb with a giggle knowing what she [...]

The Faces Albums From Worst To Best

The Faces Albums From Worst To Best We begin our discussion of the Faces, as we must, with "The Rod Conundrum" - one of the thorniest in all of rock and roll lore. Cue the ESPN 30 For 30 voice over: "What if we told you that Rod Stewart was once every bit as cool, dangerous, and desirable as Keith, Kurt, or Kanye ..." Well, It actually happened. And it was amazing. And then there was the rest of it. Read More...

PHOTOS: ARCTIC MONKEYS @VENTURA MAGESTIC THEATRE Photos and words by Debi Del Grande Yes, Mr. Turner, Ventura knows the deeper cuts very well. It's been a very long time since the Arctic Monkeys played live and we were lucky to be there. The line stretched around the block of The Ventura Magestic Theatre hours before showtime. AM is on its way up to Sasquatch Festival, but stopped by to treat us to mouth-watering set, including a brand spanking new tune called "Do I Wanna Know?" We, of course, want much more. [...]

THE BLACK ANGELS + HANNI EL KHATIB + WALL OF DEATH @THE MAYAN THEATRE

THE BLACK ANGELS + HANNI EL KHATIB + WALL OF DEATH @THE MAYAN THEATRE Photos and words by Debi Del Grande There is a fine marriage between LA music fans and The Black Angels. Whenever the Austin band comes to town, most put on their 60s-inspired attire, mess the hair up and float away to the pyschedelic sounds. With kaleidoscope images as the backdrop at The Mayan, the band brought its latest Indigo Meadow as Alex Maas took us on a higher trip and Christian Bland owned that Rickenbacker. [...]

A photo of Kai the hatchet-wielding hitchhiker when he was just a kid

A photo of Kai the hatchet-wielding hitchhiker when he was just a kid In the wake of last week's arrest for murder of Caleb Lawrence McGillvary, a.k.a. Kai the "home-free" drifter who saved a random gas worker's life , McGillvary's parents decided to come forward and speak to the New Jersey Star-Ledger about their son and his recent troubles. They also shared the above family photo of Kai long before he knew dreadlocks existed. In his YouTube-famous interview with Fresno news affiliate KMPH Fox 26 back in February, Kai told reporter Jacob Reisbeck that he doesn't "have any family" and "as far as anyone I grew up with [...]

PHOTOS: CLIPPING. + FOOT VILLAGE+ BLACK PUS @THE SMELL Photos and words by Alexandra Brown As lovers of both noise music and hip hop, Clipping. has been on our radar for a minute. Rather than using traditional hip hop beats, Clipping. backs up their lightning lipped emcee (Daveed Diggs) with brash, cacophonous noise, meant to clip speakers, when it doesn't cut out completely leaving Diggs and his quick raps naked in accapella. Fresh off a month long US tour with tribal noise rock outfit Foot Village (a group consisting of four drummers, two of which scream vocals along with an enthusiastic crowd, who they [...]
