Lisa Hannigan, Robyn Hitchcock, Vashti Bunyan, Luluc, Scott Matthews and Teddy Thompson are among the artists saluting the late British folk pioneer Nick Drake on Way To Blue: The Songs of Nick Drake (April 16, Storysound). Produced by Drake's original studio man Joe Boyd, the fifteen performances are culled from a series of 2010 tribute concerts in the U.K., Australia and Italy that critics hailed as "revelatory" ( Times of London ) and "spellbinding" ( Guardian ). "In my opinion, the only way to make a tribute record work is to get [...]

Nick Drake: Road [ Get Pink ] Nick Drake's third and final album is composed of eleven starkly-worded, starkly-arranged songs recorded in two nights. Producer John Wood recalls Drake sitting in front of the microphone and playing, his guitar and breathy upfront vocals creating the mood for eleven bleak songs. Consider "Parasite": 'Take a look you may see me on the ground/ For I am the parasite of this town. [...]

5 Songs is a weekly series where we point out the strange, the grand, and the unique connections between our favorite songs. Let’s get weird. Words by Chris This is a contemporary phenomenon. I can't deny that this is a song that will divide opinion. It's a brave artist that takes on Nick Drake but that is exactly what AIVA has done with surprising success for her version of Pink Moon . What makes this work is that she has managed to do something many artists fail at by truly making it her own interpretation, turning it into a blissful, ambient track that contrasts the raw, folksy feel of the original. She's moved away from the simplicity inherent in the fact that this is a song with very few lyrics, [...]
We first featured AIVA way back in August 2010 with the wonderful Broken Lines , which was released under the moniker of AIVA THE GREAT. Just under a year later she’s back with a dreamy cover of a Nick Drake ’s 1971 classic ‘Pink Moon’ and whispers of a forthcoming EP … to say we were excited would be a massive understatement! MP3: Pink Moon by AIVA

Nick Drake was rediscovered by a generation of music fans, in a large part, due to a crafty Volkswagen campaign that forever (and ironically) juxtaposed Pink Moon with the idylls of carefree youth. Enter Washington, DC's AIVA, the woman who's here to wrestle the song back and re-imagine Pink Moon for the next generation. MP3 : AIVA - Pink Moon (Nick Drake cover)
Washington D.C.'s AIVA crafts an almost otherworldly version of Nick Drake's 'Pink Moon'.
If anyone read my Desert Island Mix from way back, you would find that Nick Drake’s “Pink Moon” is on there. To have one of your favorite songs re-done is risky business. There is no way that you will be able to emulate it perfectly, so you just have to take in a new direction [...]

AIVA, an artist out of D.C., delivers to you this striking cover of Nick Drake's classic tune "Pink Moon". Her take shifts the pensive acoustive shuffle of the original to a spacier, more expansive place. (think Moon Safari or Simple Things ). Try out the track below and let us know what you think. Every once in a long while you hit upon something that triggers your memory, and you open up the door to your past; you revisit old haunts, and most importantly, you revisit old bands. You see, I grew up listening to Nick Drake , as my dad always played it around the house, so I was always a huge fan. His intricate guitar playing and his spectacular voice. Sure, Pink Moon is the most well-known album for this artist, due largely to Volkswagen, but all those who appreciate his [...]
Vandaveer - Divide & Conquer A few weeks back I was sent Vandaveer’s upcoming album Divide & Conquer . Since I recently moved, the CD was sent to my previous residence and I had to wait until this past week to finally get my hands on the new tunes. Well it couldn’t have been a better time, because I really needed some relaxing folk to calm my nerves the past several days (my family’s home had a close call with the Santa Cruz Mountains fire that’s been going on…enough said). [...]

Today's tune comes to us from the deceased English singer/song-writer Nick Drake . Though his success during life was quite modest, posthumously Drake slowly rose to legendary status. Hey remember that movie The Royal Tenenbaums ? You haven’t seen it?! Okay, go out and grab a copy and watch it now, I’ll wait. ... You’re back! Wasn’t it good? I know . Okay, remember that part where Richie is getting on the bus after he escapes from the hospital, and there’s that song with the quiet guitar and cello and that slightly strange male vocal? That’s a track called “Fly” by Nick Drake, one of the most over-looked talents of the early 70’s. Criminally underappreciated in his [...]

A classic Deserving of a spot on any mix CD Worthy of a download, but not of frequent play Dump it like a hot rock British folk singer Nick Drake released three albums in a four-year span from 1969-1972, all of which were overlooked by the public. [...]

Brooklyn, NY based group Lowry just released their debut album Love is Dead on Engine Room Recordings, and its a devastatingly romantic glimpse inside the world of this indie folk quintet. Today's feature, One Thing , starts off with a very Nick Drakesque acoustic strum coupled with the harmony of Simon & Garfunkel-like vocals effortlessly layered by band members Heidi Sidelinker and Alex Lowry. The song shortly breaks wide open into a sweeping banjo laced tale of polarization and love, wrapped tightly in a warm blanket of potential [...]
