Back in 2009, I listened to approximately 75 records that came out of Atlanta that year. This year, I blogged about roughly 75 records, and for every album I discussed, there were at least five I listened to and didn't blog about. The quantity of music being made in this city is growing exponentially, and the Atlanta music scene runs extraordinarily deep. Over the weekend Nico Giarrano, the artist behind the dreamy bedroom pop of Places , released a new record called The Future , which at first listen sounds like anything but. Steeped in the gauzy haze of billowing synths, scattered percussion and vocals blown-out to the point of obscurity, the 11-song record swims through the rippled currents of an impressionistic '80s reverie that's warm and beguiling. It's a murky, nostalgia-laden effort to be sure, but it remains (at least at first glance) exceedingly thoughtful and surprisingly versatile. It's still to early in my listening [...]

Here's some perfect Sunday morning listening for you: a short but sweet psych funk rock jam that rides in on the wave of an infectious drum and bass groove before dissolving two minutes later in a pyschedelic haze of stuttering guitars and washed-out vocals. Along the way Places fills the track with an assortment of swirling guitars, clattering percussion and varied vocal melodies, none of which could be considered an actual hook, but put together somehow retain a catchiness that is pleasing to the ear.
