futurisk - "army now" (download) Futurisk was a synthpop band from Florida who were mostly active in the late '702s/early 802s. Their Player Piano EP is probably their most well-known release, which was recently re-released as Player Piano LP on Minimal Wave records last year. James Murphy ( LCD Soundsystem ) is also a big fan. You can hear a slight variation of this song in the video right here . buy

Memory Tapes is one of the numerous recording aliases of New Jersey-based musician Dayve Hawk (also known as Memory Cassette and Weird Tapes). This musical project is mainly aimed at lovers of laid-back psychedelic electronica (think Toro Y Moi or Neon Indian) who will enjoy its home-made, low-budget feel. Player Piano is Hawk's second full length as Memory Tapes, following his acclaimed 2009 debut Seek Magic , recorded in his home studio in rural New Jersey. Player Piano 's The album works with sparse and dreamy soundscapes to build [...]

The words to describe this album of 'indie' and 'electronic' may scare some or paint a picture of a computer junkie creating music with no soul, passion or intent other than being the next big thing. Well, you're wrong. Particularly with this album which is a fine blend of soft sounds, beautiful melody and an obvious love. 'Player Piano' opens with a 0.43 second intro, 'Musicbox (in)' something that suggests what's in the box before the wrapping is undone. No pun intended. 'Wait In The Dark' starts and it seems to hold back on no punches. When the drum beat [...]

What, seriously? More live music, people? Can't you just give it a rest for a week or two before we start all this madness over again? Think of your poor livers you fucking maniacs! Ah well, fuck it, if you insist. There are actually a couple of really decent gigs on this week, as Edinburgh's music scene gradually emerges from hiding to reclaim its town from the tourists. Well, hiding is probably exaggerating things rather, now that I think about it. Given the relative poverty of the Edge lineup, it's actually the local enterprises who have [...]

Windish Agency I've no doubt that Dayve Hawk loathes the term/scene/epithet "chillwave" that was attached to his musical identity of Memory Tapes when he emerged last year, and fairly so - its connotations were rarely positive, or at least applied without some snark, and many of the acts who would been considered his peers were kind of terrible. But if I hadn't done the cursory, "so what the hell is this all about" investigation, I might not have ever heard his debut Seek Magic and that would have been [...]
It doesn't get much better than this, people. Memory Tapes latest, Player Piano , is also his greatest; a triumphant collection of electronically-enhanced, self-confessed girl-group inspired pop songs, book-ended between two quaint little instrumentals. Although the lyrics throughout can and will invoke darker atmospheres of isolation and longing, the music rarely enters a particularly gloomy state, preferring to offer nostalgic trances reminiscent of the 80s. Songs are encouragingly vibrant; take the first major track, "Wait In The Dark." The song begins with a propulsive drum-beat and soft synths, before breaking out into a beautiful harmony of dissonant electronics. Dayve [...]

Get Player Piano on iTunes Remember those days in grade school when you'd have to read a book that you weren't even remotely interested in, but were obligated to finish a certain amount of pages? Not mature enough to muscle through it and retain the important stuff (or smart enough shuffle through the Spark Notes), so you tortured yourself with the menial task of soaking up unwanted information. The moment of self-realization for this particular instance is when you catch yourself, mid daydream, reading the same sentence you thought you'd completed no less than five [...]
Mixing synth-pop with some straightforward rock 'n' roll.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars It seems like Dayve Hawk has finally worked it out. After releasing music under bands by the names of Memory Cassette and Weird Tapes , somewhere around 2009 he decided to combine the names of the two and settled upon his latest, Memory Tapes . He then went on to make his first noteworth,y as well as full length album, in Seek Magic . Now, two years later Hawk is back once again, ready to present [...]

I whip my hair back and forth. Not because I am a teenage girl (although I sometimes act like one) but because there is a party. No, it's not in my pants. This party is in my ears, and soon it will be in yours as well. I am pleased to present to you The Indie Sabbath - more refreshing than an ice-cold soda in the middle of the desert. For me, music is the purest form of communication this world has to offer. I think I should have no other mortal wants, if I could always have plenty of music. [...]
