Adam Green & Binki Shapiro (@bikini_shapiro) took the stage at Le Poisson Rouge in NYC this past Monday night for their first show ever as a duo, debuting songs from their beautiful new self-titled record (out January 29th via Rounder / Concord Records ). The short but sweet set was filled with sparse, gentle songs about love and lust, with the two talented singers playing off of each other like a pair of old friends. Next up, the band hits Europe for a string of shows. Listen to the new single "Here I Am" [...]

NYC's Corporal , who are fronted by actor Michael Shannon, will join Less the Band, who are unconventionally frontman-less, for a show at Le Poisson Rouge on September 30th. The frantic punk-folk of Shannon's band will create an intriguing contrast with Less the Band's melodic brand of indie rock. Shannon, who will play General freaking Zod in the upcoming Superman reboot "Man of Steel," will likely intertwine Corporal's songs with support for another four years of Barack Obama, especially with the election right around the corner. Listen to one of Corporal's Obama supporting songs, logically titled "Obama 1," [...]

Photo credit: Sean Wehrli A string of bare lightbulbs coiled around the cluttered stage at (le) poisson rouge on Wednesday night. They were part of several devices artfully illuminated throughout The Barr Brothers ’ (@thebarrbrothers) set, enhancing the luster of this radiant band. The quartet opened by standing in shadows cast by golden footlights, strumming with an austerity that resembled an orchestra tuning up before melting into the glittering song “Old Mythologies”. The lights emphasized the ominous tones in their sound, [...]

The alt-hip-hop crew unveil eight new songs.

Four Tet has been a consistent resident of my headphones since I stumbled upon, “As Serious As Your Life,” a few years ago and I was beyond excited to finally hear his music live. On the other hand, I don’t really frequent shows that are driven by laptops, samplers and launchpads, so I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. It kind of felt like a first date. Hebden (Four Tet) started his set off gradually, taking his time to fill the cloudy air with melodic tunes. It seemed like he wanted to lull the crowd before sending them [...]

Kori Gardner and Jason Hammel may not be household names, but as Mates of State, this husband-and-wife indie-duo span sounds and genres, delivering their pop tunes to any open-eared listener. The couple has spent the past 12 years working nonstop, creating some of the most unique and fun music of their generation. Their newest record, last year’s Mountaintops (Barsuk), earned the band some pretty high mainstream praise. With two tracks appearing in television commercials, three tracks being featured in different television shows, and even a spot on Letterman, which helped propel sales [...]

Brooklyn's Bryan Scary has been around since his first release in 2006. I caught on to him and his band, the Shredding Tears, in 2008 when they released the second album, Flight of the Knife. I was immediately taken by the upbeat, hooky style that was like ELO meets Alice Cooper meets Beatles meets Ween. Uh, yeah, that's some good company! Have a listen to "Imitation of the Sky" from Flight of the Knife... Bryan Scary's new [...]
Coming from a very Vermont background of jam band music, the Rubblebucket crew has slowly morphed its sound into an extremely original avant-pop direction, reminiscent of a funkier and less contrived version of Dirty Projector, also armed with an unobtrusive but always fun horn section. Recently relocated to Brooklyn, the band is about to release a new full length entitled "Omega La La", realized with producer/mixer Eric Broucek (LCD Soundsystem, Cut Copy, Hercules and Love Affair) - the track "Silly Father" is available for free listen and downnload at the end of this blog entry.
