I was expecting something of an upset win at last night's Polaris Music Prize gala, and I suppose in a way that's exactly what happened. Arcade Fire taking the prize is certainly a well-deserved win, one that nearly anyone could have predicted after The Suburbs won just about every other award on the planet . It wasn't the grand surprise that Karkwa's victory last year was, and a part of me (and nearly every other blogger out there, it seemed) truly believed the jury was going to move in the same direction and deliver it to one [...]

Filed under: News , Exclusive , Awards Chromewaves When the grand jury for the 2011 Polaris Prize voted Montreal's Arcade Fire as the winner at a gala Monday, Sept. 19 in Toronto, they did something no other Polaris grand jury has done in the award's previous five years -- picked the popular band to win. Indeed, the Polaris Prize, which is voted on by Canadian music critics each [...]

Lots of good records come out of Canada every year, but only one of those records gets to win the Polaris Music Prize , Canada's equivalent to the UK's Mercury Prize. Every year, a bunch of music critics vote on the most deserving Canadian album, and this year, they picked a scrappy underdog that's already won a prize or two since coming out last year: Arcade Fire's The Suburbs . Arcade Fire beat out artists like the Weeknd, Destroyer, Austra, Colin Stetson, and Braids to win the award. The [...]

I have to admit that when I heard that not all of this year's short listed artists would be playing at the 2011 Polaris Music Prize Gala, I was more than a bit disappointed. The award has never been about live performance, but seeing each artist have a chance to get up on stage and play always made the proceedings feel like a real celebration, or as much as a celebration as one could participate in while while a livestream broadcast on the internet. More than making up for the absences of [...]

The winner for the Polaris Music Prize 2011 goes to.. ARCADE FIRE Are you happy about it? Weigh in on your opinions. So I was wrong. But it's still a great album. Reason why it won is because of these tracks on the album: The Suburbs Ready To Start [...]

Arcade Fire's third LP, The Suburbs , just won this year's Polaris Music Prize. The annual prize, which honors the best album from Canada, is selected by a small jury of music journalists, bloggers, and broadcasters. Their first-ever Polaris Prize win, Arcade Fire beat out such formidable candidates as Destoryer, The Weeknd, Austra, and Colin Stetson. Along with bragging rights, Win Butler and co. also receive a $30,000 cash prize.

Here is the tenth and last album on the Polaris Music Prize 2011 shortlist. It is House of Balloons by The Weeknd . I am going to cut to chase and make my prediction on the album. It is hands that *hopefully* 100% that The Weeknd will win this year's Polaris Music Prize. If it's not then it will be a big uproar. We don't need anymore single white guys winning the Prize, more diversity please! [...]

Here is the ninth album on the Polaris Music Prize 2011 Shortlist. It is Timber Timbre 's Creep On Creepin' On which was released on April 5, 2011. I know I need to focus on the music. Just having low expectation if this album wins the Polaris Music Prize . So my prediction is that he has a 65% chance of winning it. I know there might be some people rooting for this and not sure how the grand jury [...]
The 2011 Polaris Muisc Prize gala is upon us. This being Soft Signal's first year meant it was my first go-around with the prize, and the first time people actually asked me how I thought this would all play out. I kind of kept out of the way of it, not having the time, experience, or language to properly talk about these albums in the context of the most important music prize in the country. Aside from my early picks with the long list —which weren't really predictions so much as who I'd [...]

Here is the eight album on the Polaris Music Prize 2011 shortlist. It is Colin Stetson 's New History Warfare Vol. 2. The album came out on February 21, 2011. Being the only album that is instrumental (there are two tracks that are spoken word) and some considered the album "free" jazz. Depending on how the grand jurors will vote. It's a really difficult album to get into if you aren't familiar with his work of music. So my prediction is that he [...]

Here is the seventh album on the Polaris Music Prize 2011 shortlist. I am going to cut to chase and make my prediction on Ron Sexsmith 's Long Player Late Bloomer. This is the album I haven't listened to that is in this year's shortlist. So my prediction is that he has a 50% chance of winning it. Ron is already an established musicians domestic and internationally. He is more of a musician's musician that [...]

Here is the sixth album on the Polaris Music Prize 2011 shortlist. I am going to cut to chase and make my prediction on Seeds by Hey Rosetta! So my prediction is that they have a 70% chance of winning it. Surprised that I didn't review this album when it came out. Seeds is more of a indie pop and rock album. Some are saying they are like the East Coast version of Arcade Fire or Ohibijou with their orchestral pop [...]
![Galaxie – Tigre et Diesel [Review] + Polaris Music Prize Prediction](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3730942_lg.jpg)
In the long list for Polaris Music Prize 2011 . This is one album that I had to listen to I am talking about Montreal's Galaxie with Tigre et Diesel. It's the only Francophone album in this year's long list. Being the only French band in the running. I feel like Galaxie has become the Karkwa/Malajube of this year's longlist. So in predicting on Polaris they have a 80% chance of winning. [...]
No more pussyfooting around, then. My methods may not be as scientific as CBC Radio 3's clairvoyant cat, but they're far from flinging darts at CD sleeves pinned to the wall. Besides death and taxes, it seems that the only other thing certain in our world is that on the morning of the Polaris Music Prize gala, I'll be using Quick Before It Melts to put forth my predictions on how the proceedings behind the closed doors of the grand jury room will go. It's not about who I think should [...]

Here is the fourth album that I am reviewing the shortlist nominees in alphabetically order. It is Destroyer 's Kaputt. This album came out on January 25, 2011. Since it's release the album has gain critical praise. Depending on how the juror members will vote. This album is one of three albums that will be a shoe-in to win. With it's unique lyrics (One was about doing coke) and it's music styling. As for myself (going to pull a Madonna) I absolutely loathe this [...]
