Arcade Fire wins Polaris Prize, steals $30k prize from other Canadian buzzbands who needed it more

Arcade Fire wins Polaris Prize, steals $30k prize from other Canadian buzzbands who needed it more Every one in Canada thinks that the Arcade Fire is the greatest export that their country has ever produced, and they will do anything to 'hype' and 'reward' their golden goose, which is why they gave them the Polaris Prize. The prize is a Canadian gimmick that the country has to 'celebrate its arts/artists' and reward them with money, especially because 'indie' used to be a poor people sport, but now the Arcade Fire are rich, but also 'hella mainstream.' Now the country has a 'national crisis'-- do we give the [...]

Después de salir victorioso en las categorías Álbum del Año en los Grammy y los Juno Awards y Álbum Internacional en los Brit Awards, The Suburbs (2010) sigue cosechando galardones. Arcade Fire win the 2011 Polaris Prize

Arcade Fire win the 2011 Polaris Prize Arcade Fire beat out the other 9 shortlisters to win this years Polaris Prize and 30k for their album The Suburbs . For the first time since the awards started in 2006, an indie band that went "mainstream" ending up winning. As artistic merit is the only factor in the decision to pick the Polaris winner, it seems as if we've just moved into a music industry where an artist can produce a great album and get rewarded both by critics and the public. Congrats to Arcade Fire .

Indeed, the Polaris Prize, which is voted on by Canadian music critics each [...]

Arcade Fire take home 2011 Polaris Prize

Well the 2011 version of the Polaris Music Prize was handed out at a gala in Toronto last night. In the past, the jury has shown a preference for the underdogs, awarding the prize to the likes of Final Fantasy, Caribou, and Fucked Up. This time around they surprised no one as the Grammy Award-winning Arcade Fire took home the prize for their album The Suburbs. There's no denying that it was a

Arcade Fire Win 2011 Polaris Prize

Filed under: News , Exclusive , Awards Well, can't say that we're surprised to see Montreal's Arcade Fire walk away with Canada's music critic-voted Polaris Prize for 2011. The honour, which comes with a $30,000 jackpot, was awarded to the beloved collective Monday night (Sept. 19) at an invite-only gala in Toronto for their smash album, 'The Suburbs.' While there was speculation that the tide might turn on the clear frontrunner in [...]

Polaris Prize Prediction on The Weeknd's House of Balloons

Polaris Prize Prediction on The Weeknd's House of Balloons Here is the tenth and last album on the Polaris Music Prize 2011 shortlist. It is House of Balloons by The Weeknd . I am going to cut to chase and make my prediction on the album. It is hands that *hopefully* 100% that The Weeknd will win this year's Polaris Music Prize. If it's not then it will be a big uproar. We don't need anymore single white guys winning the Prize, more diversity please! [...]

Revisiting Creep On Creepin' On + Polaris Prize Prediction

Revisiting Creep On Creepin' On + Polaris Prize Prediction Here is the ninth album on the Polaris Music Prize 2011 Shortlist. It is Timber Timbre 's Creep On Creepin' On which was released on April 5, 2011. I know I need to focus on the music. Just having low expectation if this album wins the Polaris Music Prize . So my prediction is that he has a 65% chance of winning it. I know there might be some people rooting for this and not sure how the grand jury [...]

Revisiting New History Warfare Vol. 2 "Judges" + Polaris Music Prize Prediction

Revisiting New History Warfare Vol. 2 "Judges" + Polaris Music Prize Prediction Here is the eight album on the Polaris Music Prize 2011 shortlist. It is Colin Stetson 's New History Warfare Vol. 2. The album came out on February 21, 2011. Being the only album that is instrumental (there are two tracks that are spoken word) and some considered the album "free" jazz. Depending on how the grand jurors will vote. It's a really difficult album to get into if you aren't familiar with his work of music. So my prediction is that he [...]

Polaris Prize Prediction on Ron Sexsmith's Long Player Late Bloomer

Polaris Prize Prediction on Ron Sexsmith's Long Player Late Bloomer Here is the seventh album on the Polaris Music Prize 2011 shortlist. I am going to cut to chase and make my prediction on Ron Sexsmith 's Long Player Late Bloomer. This is the album I haven't listened to that is in this year's shortlist. So my prediction is that he has a 50% chance of winning it. Ron is already an established musicians domestic and internationally. He is more of a musician's musician that [...]

Colin Stetson Suffered Through a 'Stress Nightmare' to Earn Polaris Prize Nod

Colin Stetson | A Take Away Show | Part 1
Filed under: News , Exclusive , Awards Courtesy of Colin Stetson Being Colin Stetson is genuinely painful. You might think that Stetson's status as the go-to guy when indie royalty like Arcade Fire , LCD Soundsystem , Feist , the National and most recently Bon Iver need a saxophonist would make for a life of wine and roses. You'd be wrong, though. Mostly, Stetson's is [...]

Polaris Prize Prediction on Seeds by Hey Rosetta!

Polaris Prize Prediction on Seeds by Hey Rosetta! Here is the sixth album on the Polaris Music Prize 2011 shortlist. I am going to cut to chase and make my prediction on Seeds by Hey Rosetta! So my prediction is that they have a 70% chance of winning it. Surprised that I didn't review this album when it came out. Seeds is more of a indie pop and rock album. Some are saying they are like the East Coast version of Arcade Fire or Ohibijou with their orchestral pop [...]

Galaxie – Tigre et Diesel [Review] + Polaris Music Prize Prediction

Galaxie – Tigre et Diesel [Review] + Polaris Music Prize Prediction In the long list for Polaris Music Prize 2011 . This is one album that I had to listen to I am talking about Montreal's Galaxie with Tigre et Diesel. It's the only Francophone album in this year's long list. Being the only French band in the running. I feel like Galaxie has become the Karkwa/Malajube of this year's longlist. So in predicting on Polaris they have a 80% chance of winning. [...]

Listen to The Makeover – Makeover Polaris Mixtape Latest track from the Toronto nu-disco duo's clever Polaris Music Prize mixtape of cover songs from artists shortlisted for the Polaris which they have been releasing on a song a week basis for the past couple months. This radical reworking of The Weeknd 's "The Morning" has been on repeat for much of this week since I first heard it (thanks to the heads up from group member Jeremy Glenn 's manager, C. Hill). Now, if you were subscribed to the Kitchen Facebook page you would have heard this days ago [...]

BRAIDS-Native Speaker
Filed under: News , Exclusive , Awards Marc Rimmer While Montreal-based pop-experimentalists Braids aren't the only rookie act present in the short list for this year's Polaris Prize , drummer Austin Tufts still marvels that his band's debut disc, 'Native Speaker,' made the grade. "It was a huge honour," the percussionist tells Spinner of the nomination. "To receive that kind of acclamation for your first record feels really great. [...]

Austra Eager to Represent Electronic Music for This Year's Polaris Prize

Filed under: News , Exclusive , Awards Paperbag Records On the phone from a tour van on its way to Berlin, Austra 's Katie Stelmanis reminds us her dark electro outfit is still a "baby band," despite being nominated for the prestigious Polaris Prize , to be given out at a gala Sept. 19 in the band's hometown of Toronto. In today's climate, a band can be hyped by a [...]
