Daniel Miller's Mute Records has epitomised excellence and eccentricity for decades, and for artists yet to sign on the dotted line, it's the line many would most want to sign. The Roundhouse, meanwhile, is questionably the London venue most artists would yearn to play, a Grade II listed hub of beastly beauty lumped on the Chalk Farm Road. Decadent setting, arsenal of genuinely captivating electronica, Vince Clarke, Andy Fletcher and a throng of "proper music" obsessives, Mute's takeover of the annual Short Circuit bash could never be anything short of spectacular, whilst simultaneously remaining entirely overwhelming. A [...]

Editor's Note: Here at BIYL we like to wing things. There's no master plan for our end of year lists, and frankly I don't even know if I'll be able to make one. But I imagine we'll each be tackling the year separately (and possibly in one collective discussion, we'll see how things go). Mark has decided to kick things off, and breaks down what artists & performances that had the greatest impact on him this year. 2009! What a year for me, musically! I have never been so enthused from January right through the end [...]

Oh, 2009. What music to my ears! It was the best of times, it was the worst of times...and one of the greatest years in Pop music since-well, since 2007. Sorting out this list was truly difficult. All I want to do is reach out my arms and squeeze all of these little albums together for one, snugly show of musical appreciation. Honestly, fabulous year in music. It's totally not fair to list you all in descending order based on quality, but hey...people love that shit. Just remember: You're all winners in my book! Well, except [...]

As promised, here's the second installment of my top albums of 2009. The year carried on into March, which brought us releases from some very familiar acts (and in the case of the one-man Bono show, sometimes too familiar), such as U2, The Prodigy, PJ Harvey and John Parish, Prince, Gomez, and Pet Shops Boys. We also had albums from The Decemberists, The Whitest Boy Alive, The Great Lake Swimmers, MSTRKRFT, vitaminsforyou, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Polly Scattergood, Neko Case, Royksopp, Julie Doiron, Peter, Bjorn and John, and lastly, the Filthy Dukes, who already made my countdown. The Rakes gave their [...]
Polly Scattergood releases the Bunny Club EP on November 17th 2009. Featuring versions of tracks from her debut album, "Polly Scattergood," the EP opens with a mix of "Bunny Club" by Nerina Pallot and Andy Chatterley (aka We Are The Chatterleys) and includes Tara Busch's Analog Suicide Mix of "Nitrogen Pink," the acoustic demo [...]

Do ya'll know about the The Golden Filter yet? Since I've been outta the scene for a minute I really have little clue where to pick back up again. Anyway, in case you missed out on this band their first time around, no sweat. They're back again with a new jam, Thunderbird . I just love the sweeping synth's and melancholy vocals and the production value is off the charts!! Its got a 60's psychedelic feel mixed with a bit of the 80's and of course today's latest dance effects. Stellar!! [...]

So I am another year older today.... Ha last year I remember well, Keath putting together a great little podcast for me when we both wrote for Rock Sellout. This year I thought maybe I should reflect and give you all a little mixtape!!!! So I have spent a good part of this evening trawling my mp3's. These are all artists I have had the pleasure to write about. Most of them bring back fond gig memories or interviews. Ok so it's a little self-indulgent but just thought I would include [...]

The last few months without any new tracks from The Golden Filter left us feeling somewhat uneasy. We were lost and unsure of what to make of the scene without their much needed presence. While they have turned some songs into golden tracks, we wanted more more and more, including original tracks from them. Well, it seems our prayers have been answered. They have agreed to release a brand new track " Thunderbird ", albeit at a lower quality. Much thanks to their label/music mag [...]

This week I'm going to feature some of my favourite female artists. This is significant because for a long time during my teens and even a bit after, I didn't listen to music by very many female artists. There was absolutely no real reason for this - I just found myself inherently drawn to music produced by males, much in the same way I've usually gravitated towards books by male authors. In my teen years, the mainstream and alternative scenes seemed to be dominated by either pop tart music (Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, etc.) or whiny/angry chick music (Alanis Morrissette, [...]

Every thing that the The Golden Filter touches is, well, solid gold. They seem to be pretty mysterious, shying away from sharing much about themselves. As they said in an interview on KillahBeez, "The origins of the golden filter lie somewhere in the cosmic seas of darkness and desperation… and the way in which the tides rise above that." The Golden Filter - Solid Gold The Golden Filter - Solid Gold (Clouded Vision Remix) [...]

Chrissy Piper The Mountain Goats have revealed (revelated?) details of their next album and rather than utilize more of his typically cryptic or obscure song titles, John Darnielle has instead opted to name all twelve songs on The Life Of The World To Come after Bible verses. Whether these are meant as shorthand for each song's real, divinely-inspired title or if he's just drawing thematic parallels is unclear, but what's for certain is that the title of the first released MP3, linked below, is easier to say (and type) than "So the [...]

God Help The Girl I'll not presume to speak for other Belle & Sebastian fans, but when word came out that Stuart Murdoch was putting the Scottish septet on hiatus to work on a film/stage/musical project, I couldn't help but be concerned. After all, hiatuses, solo projects and retrospective compilations - last year's BBC Sessions - don't usually augur well for the future of a band going forwards. The future of Belle & Sebastian aside, one can't help but look on the results of Murdoch's efforts, manifested [...]

While Lady Gaga and Regina Spektor have recently snagged the Stateside mantle of edgy, left-of-center female vocalists making notable waves on the mainstream charts, in the UK that honor is split in fifteen different directions among an impressive cadre of gifted young women: Little Boots, Elly Jackson (La Roux), Lily Allen, M.I.A., Florence Welch of Florence and the Machine and more. Another distinctive voice in the UK's long line of idiosyncratic singers is Polly Scattergood who, along with willowy powerhouse Natasha Kahn of Bat for Lashes , follows in the more unpredictable footsteps of dramatic forebears like [...]

Just back in Stockholm from a great trip to New York. Inspired of the Big Apple in all kind of ways, I wanted to give you some new music from the New York area. The Golden Filter is not new to me, but the remix they do of Polly Scattergood 's "Please Don't Touch" is quite new to me. You can hear the Golden Filter sound driving the song forward. Also hear out the original, even if Polly is from London. Polly Scattergood – Please Don't Touch (The Golden Filter [...]
