Only Beirut and La Shark are fighting to make the harpsichord cool. A battle that against the odds they are winning.

Tweet I don't enjoy it when a song sounds similar to another song, let me just clear that up from the start, but I do enjoy it when parts of songs remind me of other songs. Especially when that song is one of my all-time favorites such as " The Summer Ends " by American Football. Basically "Who Knows Who Knows" cuts a minute and a half from the intro, stays aligned for half of a verse, throws a solid drum line in the [...]
Beirut's third full album finds Zach Condon and company pulling back from the globe-trotting dalliances of their earlier efforts, in favour of a lush summation of their musical expeditions to date. From its simple titles to its clear melodies, 'The Rip Tide' is, by some distance, Beirut's most accessible record. The album opens with sixteen bars of reed organ, a warm-up of measured breathing before the brass riff of 'A Candle's Fire' throws open the curtains and lets daylight in. There's a celebratory confidence to the song's arrangement that suggests Condon is knowingly in full control of his [...]

Mesmerising and genre-defiant band Beirut release a new album through their own label, Pompeii, on August 29th. Ahead of the new release, the band have released free download 'East Harlem', and because we're lovely, we thought we'd share it with you. The orchestral world-folk-pop group have gained a lot of ground internationally, travelling much of the world to play shows since the band's beginnings back in 2006. It's exciting to see a band who could seemingly easily attract the attention of major record labels deciding to stay independent instead - it seems to be a [...]

Beirut debuted "East Harlem" late last week, the A-side for the 7" made available via Zach Condon's own Pompeii record label today. The sound, if you haven't heard it yet, is unmistakably Beirut - a subtle coalition of Eastern bravado with Condon's simple melody. Listen to the stream below, via We All Want Someone To Shout For . The group will be at Bonnaroo later this week, then will take a lengthy trip outside the states before their August return to Lollapalooza .
Sunny Pompeii was buried in the ashes of Mt. Vesuvius nearly two thousand years ago and reborn as a psychedelic pop band in 2010 on the hills of Little Mountain in Vancouver, British Columbia. The 4-piece fuses together the classic warmth of sun-baked afternoons with a refreshing blast of melodic distinction. Listening to their music [...]

Explosions in the Sky - Your Hand in Mine For those of you who watch the show Friday Night Lights, then this should sound VERY familiar to you. The show often uses music from the band Explosions in the Sky in their musical score. That is not how I personally fell in love, but it is great to see them get such great exposure. Their music is all instrumental, so it is a great study companion if you need one. If you enjoyed that track, here are few others that might also tickle [...]
Zach Condon, Oaxaca, Mexico, Beirut, Realpeople - I'm sure you've heard it all before. Check out the new video for "The Concubine" from Realpeople's Holland EP where Zach wanders around Brooklyn while his other half [maybe?] enjoys some desert scenery. Deerhunter - Agoraphobia I live sturdy Pompeii. I lust long at the market. From a distance. Behind buildings. Beneath blanket, skin, and sinew. I squint (and lust long at market). I live within dead room to live sturdy Pompeii. With never response. With never linger. Where each word, each breath and part-me plummets leaden to the floor, a silent tenfold-gravity that amputates my toes. Where all those scattered part-me - word, breath, and every - squint (and lust long). And I, shuffling toeless between [...]

The fourth (count 'em) installment of my SXSW artists feature. If you're new to the game, I list some of the acts I'm excited about, with mp3s and a brief note about each. And on to the action! P-T time. Stay tuned for the grand finale later this week. Mieka Pauley - "9:453 [MP3] This Cambridge, MA artist doesn't need much of an introduction from me. Most of you know her. And if you don't, get to know her. The strength and range of her voice is stunning. [...]

Beirut March of The Zapotec Realpeople Holland (02.2009, Pompeii Records) RIYL: Pinatas or Rainbow Bright I first listened to the new Zach Condon releases without knowing any back story as to why there were two separate EP's released together and sounding so completely different. The first half of the release, Beirut's March of The Zapotec encompasses Condon's glorious world music brass laden half of his personality while Realpeople's, Holland represents his looping electronic side. I enjoyed both, but was slightly confused by the mash [...]
You can see naming a band Pompeii two ways. One: you're naming your band after a town that was buried in ash and largely forgotten for hundreds of years. Didn't anyone miss them? This isn't particularly inspiring. But wait. Two: a band named after something that lived next door to one of the great natural disasters in human history, only instead of being leveled or destroyed - it was perfectly

Throw out every conception of music you ever had that had to do with pigeonholed genre classification or boundaries of any kind, because when you talk about a group like Ponytail , there's no way to best talk of them. They are enigmas, exceptions to most rules. They are a Baltimore thunderstorm that doesn't quit in a day. It follows you, beating at your heart and mind and soul. Ponytail make you think all sorts of "holy shit"s and "oh my god"s and you begin to see what your whole person feels like when you only react with smiles, [...]

Pompeii's latest effort, Nothing Happens For A Reason - out now on Eyeball Records , is available for streaming here . We promise you that this record is a great accompaniment to Fall activities such as: pumpkin carving, leaf crunching, beard growing, cave-cricket fighting, violent crimes , apple picking, squirrel dodging, pie baking and hot cider drinking. Delicious. Nothing Happens For A Reason is riddled with warm tones, delicate hooks and some of the finest album artwork I've ever seen (judge this book by it's cover) by the talented Elizabeth RIccardi [...]
