The solo project from composer Ken Rangkuty, Keenhouse delivers a unique blend of electronic wizardry and dreamy synth-pop that creates something richer your average bedroom dreampop. The demos that would become Keenhouse's debut Civic Transit were a reaction to Rangkuty's own desires to combine his own extensive training on piano with a desire to make communicative pop music of his own. Taking inspiration from his diverse upbringing in Indonesia and Germany, Keenhouse's music drifts around nostalgic takes on a youth remembered only in dreams. Themes of teenaged innocence, young love, and futuristic fantasies paint a picture of equal [...]
Dig Your Grave is the title of a new 73 EP from The Pharmacy which is as good an example of indie-pop-garage bliss as you'll find. We included the title track in our January Best of the Month mix. Here is the equally good video for it - a super 8 mess of violence, fire and (what else) graveyards. a Buy it here . Or limited edition colour vinyl from Kind Turkey Records here . Caroline Polacheck is Beyonce and Kool A.D. (Das Racist) is J Cole? sounds about right if you're speaking of their recent Triple J performance were the two did their version of 'Party.' Rising UK popstrel Delilah must be feeling quite charitable at the moment, for she is offering a free mixtape entitled "2 - 4am" , consisting of EIGHT new songs, in glorious 320 bit rate. mp3: Bobby Day - Teenage Philosopher Teenage Philosopher was released in 1960, two years after Bobby Day's breakout smash, Rockin' Robin. Both tunes were written by Leon René, who set up two LA based labels I'm very fond of, Rendezvous and Class. Unfortunately, the length of time since René was himself a teenager (about 50 years) is glaringly obvious in the lyrics of today's selection. I can't imagine the condescending "beware beware beware" tone resonating with the youth of any era. Still, like Rockin' Robin, Teenage Philosopher has a swinging Earl Palmer rock'n'roll [...]
It's that time again, friends, time to gather around the table and share our thoughts on certain special albums. The subject this time is Sharon Van Etten -the woman, the myth, the legend. Alright, there's nothing really mythical about her but she is a legendary woman, and her newest album, Tramp , is released and ready for listening and debate. We have all eight of our writers contributing their thoughts here. Dig in, explore our opinions, and share your own in the comments! Sharon Van Etten / Serpents [...]
Few unsigned singers can get über-producer Timbaland and legendary songwriter/producer Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins to produce tracks for them. But few have had the drive, energy, ambition and talent as Carishma . Hard work and entertainment are in the singer's blood. Her mother is a Bollywood singer and actress who always had music playing in the house and Carishma would dance to the latest pop and Bollywood tunes. Her father is a self-made businessman who worked his way through college making pizzas and bartending; he now runs a successful business. It was this work [...]
I saw this track poppin' up on the web yesterday, so thought I would share. New York indie band , Beach Fossils, had mentioned a more "edgy" sound with their upcoming material, but with "Shallow" off their latest 7" single on Captured Tracks , it was pretty much what Beach Fossils sounded like before. Now, that's not really a bad thing, but hearing that they wanted to try some new sounds and get the same thing kind makes you go "huh?" However, the b-side "Lessons" has a darker tone and as the song continues we hear [...]

Lui è Giancarlo Prandelli, figlio d'arte, musicista e produttore.
JACK PENATE.
Don't know how I missed this one. Jack Peñate's 2nd album was one of my faves of 2009. His big pop dance tracks were hard not to notice. Then perhaps about a week ago, Jack dropped a new track, all recorded in one shot. Called No One Lied Jack actually put a vid out on [...]

LISTEN: Jack and Ace – "I'm Sorry That You Are the Black Death"
Chicago musicians Bob Nanna and Lauren LoPiccolo have united to create simple, but dreamy, acoustic pop ditties under the moniker Jack and Ace . "I'm Sorry That You are the Black Death" pairs delicately plucked guitar melodies with earnest lyrics about, what else, love. Jack and Ace prove that melancholy doesn't need to be so complicated to be effective. Nanna is better known for his work with influential post-hardcore (or emo, if you like) outfit Braid and Hey Mercedes. LoPiccolo previously teamed up with Nanna in the City on Film. [...]
Literature- Arab Spring
ARAB SPRING by Literature Literature is a pop rock group whose sound has a lotta jangle and a little lo-fi. It's a familiar angle, but the songwriting is too catchy for me to ignore, reminding me a lot of groups like Smith Westerns. While most tracks on this Literature LP have a happy-go-lucky vibe, they never stray too far from their rough and sorta rowdy rock attitude, keeping these tracks from getting too sweet. The band is currently allowing a digital download of this LP for whatever price you'd like. Grab the [...]
New Build- "Finding Reasons"
Finding Reasons by New Build Here's the first track to drop from the forthcoming New Build album, Yesterday Was Lived and Lost . The group comes straight out of the UK, and the album the song comes from should be out in March. They've also got strong connections to groups like Hot Chip and LCD Soundsystem. A lot like that Rhye track I just blogged today, this rhythm and synths on this one call out to the 80s, but nostalgia isn't where this song ultimately gets its power. The quirky, syncopated [...]
Rhye- "Open"
Caught this song on the Fader , and I'm completely smitten with it. It's from an anonymous California-based duo named Rhye. They've currently got a 123 out on Innovative Leisure for the track streaming above. "Open" has a light, electronic groove that reminds me of the synth-heavy art pop of the 80s. The gently sparkling guitars that flow throughout the track call back to the same era of music. The vocal, though, isn't really hitting me with any kind of time period. All it's hitting me with is unadulterated beauty. It's smooth, pretty, soft, and [...]
