New bands rarely come on stronger than this. And with their debut LP Silence Yourself , the London post-punk quartet Savages show us that they’re not pussyfooting around. The band’s guitarist, Gemma Thompson, started developing the idea for the all-female group almost a year before it was formed, and if this album is anything to go by, the time and effort gone into the project has certainly not gone to waste. The album starts with an excerpt from John Cassavetes’s film Opening Night , with some [...]

Photo by Jem Goulding Albeit somewhat abruptly (not that we're complaining, mind), Savages have announced plans for their debut LP, Silence Yourself , and have a new cut from it in the dynamic "She Will". continue reading >>
The French can really nail the sophisto-cool aesthetic. Think of Air or smoother Daft Punk tracks with their Parisian calm and collectedness, being cool means never losing your cool. This track from Paradis, a young Parisian duo feels calm, collected and sexy. It’s a perfect noir-pop track which reinforces music related national stereotypes. The french [...]
Welcome to the beginning of your week: ► If it's the first Monday of the month, it must be time for new residencies to kick off. Here's a quick rundown of the highlights: The dancetastic Yellow Alex & the Feelings play the Satellite, with Nightmare & the Cat and Mirror Talk opening. It figures to be packed at the Bootleg Bar, where PAPA starts the big build-up toward releasing its debut album later this year, and Beat Club and Wardell open. Psych-rockers Feeding People have a new album on the [...]

New Savages live EP entitled I Am Here coming soon on September 30 via Pop Noire . The entire music industry is going to lose their shit over this band at CMJ. Told you so.

ONE TO WATCH 2012 It's Not a Date, It's a Band The 1975 are four friends from Manchester. They make expansive pop noir that echoes their home city's sonic history. The title track that opens their debut EP is a darkly atmospheric introduction to The 1975, densely layered synths and vocoder-effected harmonies leading into the punchy drums of heavy, electronic lead track ' The City [...]

The 1975 are 4 friends from Manchester. They make expansive pop noir that echoes their home city’s sonic history. They recently released their debut EP, Facedown , & are happy to announce their 1st ever UK headline tour this December, including dates in both their native Manchester + London’s Barfly. Facedown EP crashed into the iTunes alternative album chart at number 2. To celebrate the big accomplishment, the band wants you to have free No Ceremony remix of “The City”, the lead track from Facedown . [...]
Pre-order the debut seven-inch vinyl single from Savages at Pop Noire

Savages are a band lost to time. I could imagine the craziness of 'Husbands' up against the antics of The Birthday Party or Joy Division circa 1980 and fitting right in. The British four piece produce frenetic and liberating post punk that always threatens to fall off the rails. Its not always pretty, nor comfortable. Savages are out to stir things up and not in a marketing tag kinda way! Pop Noire have released their debut single 'Husbands' with the b-side 'Flying To Berlin' via iTunes (7-inch is still in the works). [...]

Just last week, London's latest all girl buzz group, Savages , released their debut single "Husbands" . Following on from that, we can now hear its flip side - "Flying To Berlin". continue reading >>
Savages | Flying to Berlin At the time of writing, one of two existing Savages songs has 731 Soundcloud plays. Small stakes when you imagine a shitty Tiesto remix could garner 10,000 in under an hour. Perhaps I’ve deluded myself of Savages’ reputation, perhaps the fact that said reputation has organically grown through live shows will mean that online support may take its time. But most importantly this is a stunning work, equal to ‘ Husbands ’ in its showcasing of style, intensity, terror. So hit play and see what [...]

Last week we featured the enthralling Savages ( twitter ) as a band to watch , and today we have the other A-side of Husbands with Flying To Berlin . It is more dark and cinematic post-punk spilling with energy and attitude. Passionate and perfect. Savages - Flying to Berlin / Husbands will be released by Pop Noire digitally on 28 May with a physical 73 following in June. Savages - Flying To Berlin was originally published [...]
"Flying to Berlin", the B-side from Savages' incredible debut single, is not only...

The slightly older generation of readers that visit this blog will surely have an opinion on this band. Anyone that was around the first time Joy Division or Siouxie & The Banshees screamed into view will find lots of familiar ground with today's recommendation. Their first listen will either stir up a love for this band because of their affinity to the guitar bands synonymous with the late 70s and early 80s, or they'll hate them because of how depressing it is to see how little music has moved on. Everyone else can stand their opinions [...]

In all likelihood you're probably already well aware of intimidatory London noisenik post-punks Savages . Heck; you've presumably already caught them live. If not, they're up early on Eat Your Own Ears' stage at next month's Field Day , and they're a quite spectacular proposition within such a context . However on record, they've up 'til now be a rather less qualitative quantity. Husbands, one half of the quartet's debut single that is to be released digitally this and physically next month on lead vocalist Jehnny Beth's Pop Noire label, changes all that somewhat: a [...]

London's Torches ( facebook / twitter ) produce dark and atmospheric gloom-pop. Each song is centred on drum machine beats and grandiose vocals, with ethereal claustrophobic builds that takes you somewhere a little darker, a twisting and menacing journey with enough of a melody to stay with you. Both Towerblock Confetti and Little Ice Age make you want to close out the night. What brought this quintet to my attention, however, was a cover swap they have done with hazy lo-fi duo and Walrus favourites Crushed Beaks . They took already brilliant Close [...]
