Video games can be metal. I'm not talking put-on-big-hair-and-fight-demo ns-while-the-guitarist-shreds metal, but dark, creepy, rich, brutal, wading-through-blood-while-try ing-to-hold-onto-your-soul metal. The sort of experience that's intense and horrifying and makes you see, hear, and feel the world as a dangerous, wicked thing that wants nothing more than to consume your being. Sure, there's plenty of demon fighting too, [...]
Sorry for the crappy non-updates recently… I have just been crazy busy. I promise that I will be back with regular updates really really soon; for now, here’s what I’ve been listening to: I am pretty sure that this is my favourite song of the year so far: Active Child featuring How To Dress Well : "Playing House" Night Birds : The Other Side Of Darkness Only shit... so digging this album—80s hardcore, surf punk... FANTASTIC! [...]
We all know Portal 2 for its mind-bending puzzles and biting black humor. But its clever music deserves a nod too.
Very late and very quick post today. A while back I posted about The National’s most recent bit of brooding output, “ Exile Vilify ,” which anchored the soundtrack for the video game Portal 2 . Since then, the game's developers held a contest for fans to come up with what would become the official video for the track, with The National in as judges, picking the first and “1.00000000001th” place entries. The result is a slice of sock puppet mopery and some rather dour animation. First place, directed by C. F. [...]
Recently a contest was held to make a video for The National 's contribution ("Exile, Vilify") for the video game, Portal 2's soundtrack. The winner (out of 320 entries), as chosen by the band themselves, was about a sad looking sock puppet. I have to say though, I prefer the video that was chosen as #1.00000000001. Watch both down below. [#1 Video] [#1.00000000001 Video]
When The National released “Exile, Vilify” for the video game Portal 3 earlier this year, they held a video contest. The winner, CF Meister , decided to make an adorable sock puppet sing the depressing song has he ventured across vast landscapes, presumably very upset for the constant motion! The National - “Exile, Vilify”

We've played the Portal video game series, released earlier this Spring. So, it appears the National must also be big fans of the game, as they contributed their song “Exile, Vilify” to the Portal 2 soundtrack as well had a contest for the video of the song. The winning video came from Mr. C F Meister. Check it out above.

Video: The National - “Exile Vilify” The winners of Portal 2 and the National’s “Exile Vilify” video contest were announced today, despite weeks spent trapped in a “seemingly intractable stalemate” between organizers over the recipients of the first and second place prizes. Two videos in question were an animated retelling of a plot line from the video game and a live-action clip of a man lip-synching via melancholic hand puppet, which quite beautifully captures the song’s forlorn mood. In the end, the latter clip took home top honors [...]

While The Nationa l didn't seem like the best band to soundtrack a video game, "Exile Vilify", their contribution to Portal 2 , really was a perfect choice for the first-person puzzle-platformer. Because of the game's massive popularity, Valve Software, the game's developers, decided to hold a contest to find the best fan-made music video for the track. And when Valve couldn't pick a winner, they turned to the band to help find the clear choice amongst the 320 entries. The following two videos are the first and 1.00000000001th place winners. The winning clip, filmed, directed, [...]

Posteriormente, [...]
I don't know how I missed this... it's a single that The National wrote for the video game Portal 2. I was unaware that video games hired bands to make soundtracks for them, I suppose I've been living in a cave. I don't know the first thing about video games but I know a good [...]
An ingenious puzzle game which will test your grey matter more than your reflexes, Portal 2 (the original game was part of the Orange Box , along with Half Life 1 & 2 ) is an experience like few other you will have on any console. Your mission, essentially, is to guide your character though a series of tests by utilising portals (opening gateways between previously inaccessible areas). It seems simple, you can place a portal on any solid white background, so you open a portal at an accessible point, fire its twin to a hitherto [...]
The National give us yet more 'extras' with Exile Vilify - a soft, sweeping ballad with a twirling piano motif. Strings are very much in. Featured on the soundtrack to the video game Portal 2, according to the band's PR people The National's “raw and emotive music evokes the same visceral reactions from its listeners that Portal does from its players.” We were thinking exactly the same thing. With their appearance on the soundtrack to Paul Giamatti's Win Win with the similarly piano-led Think You Can Wait , The National are [...]

If you are a fan of The National then you are probably loving that the band is releasing new tracks without any announcement of a new album release. Whether it be lending their talents to a new video game or movie soundtrack, they are putting out some solid tracks as of late. Here are some of the new releases along with a couple of my old favourites. Enjoy! Free mp3: The National - Exile Vilify Free mp3: The National - Think You [...]

The National are back with a new song that is featured on the soundtrack of Portal 2 , the much-anticipated sequel to 20072s best-selling puzzle-driven video game from Valve . The original-which I played way too much of-was gloomy and mesmerizing, words often used to describe Matt Berninger's voice, so the two seem to be a perfect fit. According to a band spokesperson , The National's "raw and emotive music evokes the same visceral reactions from its listeners that Portal does from its players," so, yeah, this sounds like it's going to be awesome. Have a listen [...]
Kirk Hamilton, of Paste Magazine , wrote a great article on why Portal 2 is the perfect game for non-gamers: But the real magic of Portal 2 isn’t in its script, its graphics, its puzzles or its level design; it’s in the way it plays . And that’s why I’m so excited for you, dear Non-Gamer Friend, to try this game. As important as writing, storytelling, music and voice-acting are, play is the thing that makes a game a game. Play is why we are so passionate about these odd digital artifacts, why [...]
For years now the company known as Valve has been recognized repeatedly as one of the pioneers in modern gaming. Their flagship Half Life series has received countless awards and praise for being among the greatest videotape series of all time. Its not often that a Valve game releases, they are known for taking as long as they want to polish their games and releasing them only when they are the highest quality. That being said, I had high expectations for the sequel to the much loved critically acclaimed Portal. This time it would be a full 8+ hour game. [...]
