It's been a wild ride to the finish line, but the dust has finally settled and we are excited to announce the overall final results of our "Best Emerging Act of 2011"! The Brewcycle is a 15-passenger bicycle that tours Portland's breweries. For a two hour tour it's $20 per seat during the week; on Friday and Saturday it's $25 per seat. Also, it's available to rent the entire bike by the hour for $150 per hour during the week and $170 per hour Fridays and Saturdays. That's all. Just keepin' it boozy, green and weird. There wasn't much to do for the boys of Animal Eyes in their native Alaska besides wait around for oil checks and 4:20 in the afternoon. More importantly though, they were looking for the simple chance to make some jams with friends. So with restless hearts and heads full of smoke, and the promise of great tunes and cheap rent, it makes sense that the crew would set its course on the warmer southern climate of Portland. Which is to say that while these guys certainly have a propensity for the psychadelic, these aren't your average roaming hippies. [...]

Portlandia continues to surprise me as one of the funnies sketch comedy shows in existence, not because I've lived in Portland, but because they continually land resonate jokes at hipster/nerd culture. Favorite track of 2012, so far. Yea, we're only a month in, but I find something fresh in this every.damn.time I listen to it. I'd confuse this for the original because of how good it is, but RAC gets so electro weird on it that it goes far beyond any original's experimentation limit. Here's a peek at the new track from Orcas—the collaboration between Portland's Benoît Pioulard and Seattle's Rafael Anton Irisarri (who records as the Sight Below)—from their forthcoming self-titled album, due out on April 24 on German label Morr Music. It's a soothing, wisping song with the frame of a conventional melody, but the picture within depicts something far more elusive, more abstract. It's soothing, but filled with the notion of decay, which fits in well with the song title: "Carrion" is both rotten, rancid meat and sustenance to certain animals. It seems the label founders, mates Jared and Brianne Mees, in addition to their band (Jared Mees and The Grown Children) and handmade goods/printing studio/consignment store, have yet again found a way to push the envelope when it comes to community unity between fans and their favorite bands. "Mind Control" is, unintentionally, our homage to the era of our parents generation; the most experimental, psychedelic rock song we dared to place in our debut album without veering too far from our original intent. Portland's Y La Bamba returns Februar 28 with a new record called Court The Storm on Tender Loving Empire . The band has just released "Squawk", the album's opening track, and we hear a similar South American-influenced art folk we received on their debut full-length Lupon from 2010. Portland record label Tender Loving Empire is trying to raise funds to build a next-generation shopping system to allow customers to "pay what they what" for the label's various albums. Jared Mees, who founded the record label, is calling this the " Priceless Music Project ." The goal, is to develop the system and then make it open-source for other record labels to use.
