AAN (Portland) releases new single and video “Mystery Life,” joins Psychic Ills (NYC) for Noise Pop 2/28/13

AAN (Portland) releases new single and video “Mystery Life,” joins Psychic Ills (NYC) for Noise Pop 2/28/13 Portland's indie pop darling  AAN  (pronounced "on") has been illuminating the Pacific Northwest's indie scene with alternative experimental pop music since 2007. Painted with elements of folk, psychedelia and even surf rock, the band's sound is vibrant but textured with humming guitars and plush harmonies that are powered by the raw, four octave-ranged vocals of Bud Wilson. AAN recently released "Mystery Life," the first single off of its forthcoming debut LP Amor Ad Nauseum , along with the B-side "Spiritual Provisions" and an accompanying music video that makes light of a life-or-death situation. Y La Bamba: Oh February (Album Review)

Y La Bamba: Oh February (Album Review) Oh February is the latest by Portland multi-lingual folk band Y La Bamba; it's a six-song EP filled with harmonic female-fronted, male-backed vocals. Intricate as usual, Oh February has high influence from front-woman Luz Elena Mendoza's Latin heritage paired with she and her bandmates' indie-folk background. Opener and title track "Oh February" sets the tone for the EP, but the true standout is "Death on the Road". This song not only maintains a strong, danceable shuffle-beat, it packs in both the proper levels of emotion and catchiness. Here her [...]

STRFKR :: While I'm Alive

STRFKR :: While I'm Alive STRFKR (Starfucker) is about to drop their new album, Miracle Mile ! This post has been in the pipeline for a while but since the release date is coming up - February 19 - I figured I'd stop dragging my heels. The Portland-based electronica group has been slowly leaking tracks from the upcoming record and it sounds really promising. (Actually, you can stream the whole thing at the AV Club. ) The first track on the album, "While I'm Alive" stands out as an early favorite. [...]

I Vacation in Your Portland: Bruxa, Textbeak, Nightmare Fortress, DJ RXTCH WXTCH

I Vacation in Your Portland: Bruxa, Textbeak, Nightmare Fortress, DJ RXTCH WXTCH A stellar night in Portland on Valentine's Eve 2013. Holocene is getting some wicked ass shit lately. Five dollars gets you the best slice of modern goth around. Bruxa, Textbeak, Nightmare Fortress, DJ RXTCH WXTCH was the line up. Stellar sets by all the artists on the bill. The camera on my flip phone suddenly stopped working halfway through the evening. I think the dry ice was fucking with it. I have pieced together what I have. Huge thanks to Bruxa for curating this line-up of top-notch touring [...]

On the Horizon: Spiritual Vacationing, Opaline.

If I'm to be entirely honest, before this morning I'd never indulged in anything under the banner of Vacation . It's a newfangled genre I'd never even so much as happened upon until a few incidentally sweet moments ago, though it's one to which I'll undoubtedly always return henceforth. Coined by Portland resident Hunter Thompson (denote critical omission of the 'S.') who creates fantastical whirls of flighty musical reverie under the guise of  Opaline (or OPΛLINE to employ its official stylisation), Vacation Spiritual is equal parts Koji Kondo's  Ocarina of Time  official soundtrack and Kuedo's exalted  Severant record [...]

HEAR THIS: Rare Monk

Portland’s Rare Monk head for outer dimensions with the Death By Proxy EP, previewing their forthcoming LP, Sleep/Attack.

Of Wonder

Of Wonder Of Wonder is the wonderful work of Eli Cohn and Jason Fiske who are based in Portland. They've arranged their upbeat folk style songs into full bodied orchestral epics awash with experimental strings, harking brass and intricate percussion. Think the Americana of Shearwater , the instrumentation of Andrew Bird and the writing style of Animal Collective . Cohn and Fiske it seems they were previously part of a band called Golden Holy . Whatever the story there, Of Wonder seems leaps and bounds ahead of their previous guise. [...]

EP : Y La Bamba : Oh February

EP : Y La Bamba : Oh February Following both their 2010 soul-stirring debut LP Lupon and last year’s critically adored, Steve Berlin produced Court The Storm LP, Portland Oregon’s Y La Bamba now offers up the breathtaking EP Oh February just in time for…well, February. Produced by The Decemberist’s Chris Funk, this six song record feels as rich and loaded as a full-length with its compellingly warped, old-timey radio crackle and pop. How Can U Luv Me? Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Cargo.

In typically Shoreditch, and thereby standoffish fashion there's a gaping abyss dislocating Southampton lo-fi pop practitioner Luke Donovan, aka Spectral Park , from the not insubstantial few huddled beneath a Cargo arch. Tonight sold out long ago, though there's a rather more considerable gaggle elsewhere, as something of a London underground who's who hoo-ha takes place at the bar next door. Steadily however, the flock drifts northwards from one cavern to another to coagulate in the dark, as Antipodean twangs abound. Then, from the gloom stealthily emerges a silhouette – an effete being with a [...]

New Zealand-via-Portland's Unknown Mortal Orchestra do both sides of the Pacific proud with album the second, a succession of perfectly round lo-fi smoke rings.
