One of Portland's most beloved annual clusterfucks, the Mississippi Avenue Street Fair brings an abnormally gigantic crowd to the increasingly upscale North Portland thoroughfare, with music, food, booze, crafts, and... booze, I guess. This year's lands on Saturday, July 9 , and they've got a very impressive lineup of local bands spread out over four different stages, and vaguely segregated by genre (although I'm a little hard-pressed to pinpoint exactly what makes the bands on the "Dance Stage" especially danceable). We've got the full lineup (with some TBDs for good measure) after the jump; you can also [...]

As a new radio host eight years ago, when Portland three-piece Menomena came down to my station at the time for an interview, I learned a very important lesson: Just because a band or artist makes songs about heartbreak, regret, angst, that doesn't mean they are heartbroken, regretful, or angsty to interact with. In fact, they likely won't be, since they're able to deal with or purge those feelings through their music. A few minutes into my interview with Danny , Justin and Brent , I put aside my notebook full of carefully crafted, [...]

It's always a pleasure seeing Tony Furtado perform solo, and the undivided attention of the Daniels Hall crowd on this particular night led to a great recording! Tony's duets with Trina Hamlin were highlights of the night, particularly prison work songs Hurtin' in My Right Side and Oh Berta, Berta . Sallie Ford is pure retro sass and class. From her cats eyes glasses and prim skirts to her brassy bold voice to the rollicking arrangements of their songs, Portland's Sallie Ford & The Sound Outside could easily be mistaken as being from another era. But they're not. They're a band that's future is about to be [...]

Alela Diane, Portland Oregon based artist is here cruising in her black cab limo in a USA BCS session singing, "Lady Divine". It doesn't get sweeter or more chillaxing than this... In 2008, YACHT expanded to a duo with the induction of Claire L. Evans as a full member, contributing vocals to many of the songs on the 2009 album See Mystery Lights . However, local sources have it that Jona, who is the founding member of the band, playing many years as a solo artist, is planning to expand Yacht into a full band in 2010. Michael [...]

The Portland based singer/songwriter, Casey Dienel, White Winterland , is set to release a new LP on March 3rd, title 'Kairos'. Stereogum posted the first track today, "Icarus". She and her bandmate have recently moved here to Portland and as such have begn to embrace a new direction in their songs - according to Stereogum, "She (Casey) expanded on that clanging palette via her Francophile-core Luniculaire EP and refined it to a whisper with her cover of Arthur Russell's "Lucky Cloud." Yeah, there was a sorta darkness on Phylactery Factory (remember the cartoon blood on the cover?), but this [...]

Portland's YACHT founder Bechtolt and new member/girlfriend Claire L. Evans make anthemic power jams, play them backwards and soak them in nearly-psychedelic cherry cola inspired live shows. When it comes to eating, YACHT are staunch vegans (meaning they consume no animal byproduct), whipping up dishes like chicken picado, sausage & eggs and sautéed halibut which they transfer to karma free, gastronomic delicacies like seitan picado, tofu scamble and buttery, sautéed eggplant. Sam cooks up Pyschic City (Chicken of the Woods Mushroom) Picado and Summer Bok choy. To wash it down, he will stir up his Lovage Sour, a [...]
