I really suck at going through my ReviewShine queue. I usually dread doing it. In fact I frequently eliminate any bands with names that are just plain silly before I even listen to the rest, which I generally judge before two bars have played through my headphones. I'd just up and let everything expire, never having logged in, if I didn't find a diamond in the rough every once in a while. I am not sure what caught my eye about Killing Days but once I clicked the little icon to start listening I was duly impressed. [...]

This EP came out just last December but I still got really mad at my ignorance when I learned of its existence only a few days ago. An extra day without new Paige Anderson songs is a wasted day indeed. Paige Anderson has been leading her family's bluegrass band since before she was even a teenager. The Anderson Family Bluegrass Band were ushered into this neck of the alt-country thing when Chuck Ragan brought them along the west coast leg of the 2009 Revival Tour. Ragan and the Andersons released a split 93 record that featured Paige's own "Middle of [...]

It's rare that I let a bartender I don't know talk me in to trying a new whiskey. If I don't know and trust them it's likely they are just trying to get more paper out of my wallet. So the way I discovered Redbreast is a bit of an anomaly. You see I was in Austin, Texas a little over a year ago with my wife celebrating our 9th anniversary and our first time our overnight without the kids in a decade. We had gone to see Austin Lucas and ended up being able to catch Lucero the very [...]

What’s “too long” in rock and roll? I suspect 16 years would likely qualify, but Soundgarden doesn’t sound like they missed a beat in the past decade and a half without releasing any new material. King Animal , the band’s first album since 1996’s Down on the Upside , kicks off appropriately with the raging rocker, “Been Away Too Long.” And, truth be told, as soon as the first words spew from Chris Cornell’s mouth – ‘you can’t go home, no/I swear you never can’ - you realize that it has [...]

You'll find love for Catherine Irwin 's work in two decades-worth of homemade zines in alternative libraries across the country, on mixtapes that have earned their retirement, and all over Neko Case and Kelly Hogan albums. On Little Heater , her second solo album, it's clear why she's so significant. She that enduringly great kind of a writer. Her command of language and voice is rare. Her music replenishes roots like Derroll Adams and Patsy Cline while nursing her own slow-sad songs to fragile-firm heights. Maybe depths more [...]

Would you care to introduce yourself? Hi, I'm Graham Wann, singer and guitarist with the band POST. How would you describe the music you make? Our current press release describes it as a 'sultry, darksweet and wholly petulant brand of Garage-Pop.' I think that's pretty much on the button. And someone recently tweeted that some of our new stuff sounded 'like an acidic mushroom-head lolling about in a bed of tulips' - a sign [...]

Friday's are so full of promise. You have two days ahead of you and dreams of all sorts of productive tasks you're going to accomplish on them. Then, Friday night revelries turn into Saturday morning hangovers that can only be cured with greasy food and bloody mary's which somehow evolves into meeting some friends for a few beers and then you're out to dinner when someone mentions a cool band playing down the street which becomes well whiskey, pbrs and loud tunes and no cabs home. Sunday morning is slept off and most of the early afternoon is spent arranging [...]

The best band in Murfreesboro/the world, Glossary, is on a west coast tour right now. They stopped in L.A. to record an episode of the sports/music podcast Sklarboro Country. The podcast is hosted by Randy and Jason Sklar, stand up comedians who have, among many other credits, guest-hosted "The Jim Rome Show" and created the amazing "Cheap Seats" for ESPN Classic. Fuck yeah, Glossary! You usually don't get to hear Glossary talk about their own (long) history and music in this much detail very often. Hilarious actor and suspect stand-up Nick Kroll is the show's other guest. Listen to [...]

I didn't come here to talk, I came to fuck myself up on concrete. - Animal City "And Learning to Dive" Animal City calls home the city of Chicago and the awesome midwestern label Sophomore Lounge Records ( State Champion , The Only Sons ). It's harder to locate their second LP, See You In The Funny Pages . Sixteen mangy, asphalt-scarred rock songs run feral through Mike Watt -ed funk and Sebadoh -zy stoner romancery; soundtracking greased skateboard [...]

Many longtime Drive-By Truckers ' fans have long speculated about what a Mike Cooley solo album would be like. Going back as far as Southern Rock Opera Cooley's songs were fewer in number but high in stature. His songs were usually the most poignant on any given album so the thought that if he could ever produce an album full of his own songs it would be legendary. The problem is that the reason he had so few songs per album because he didn't write many songs per year. A Fool On Every [...]
