The bedroom and the beach. Those are the two locations that have epitomized this year's indie landscape. Bedroom pop artists have emerged at such a rapid rate that, at times, they become indistinguishable, their soothing synths and submerged vocals soothing me into a saccharine coma. Meanwhile, the blissed-out sound of summer has invaded the stoic indie landscape, finally exposing the pale underbelly of indie rock to the sun's rays. A few artists have even fused these two trends to form some sort of musical oxymoron. Amidst these trends, a rock band like Japandroids sticks [...]
Like their previous 7″ singles, "Younger Us," and "Art Czars," "Heavenward Grand Prix" relies a lot on immediacy. Like the other singles, these songs are about volume, about rocking out. These are songs to be shouted, not studied. These are songs about youth and girls and not caring about much else, and sometimes that's all a song needs. Unlike their previous 73 singles, "Heavenward Grand Prix" chops the usual Japandroids tempo in half, something the duo really didn't bother with even on their standout Post-Nothing LP. It's a nice change of pace; [...]

After my ability to write complete sentences was hampered by an 8-day peyote trip (much of which was spent listening to Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music, while simultaneously trying to memorize Lester Bangs' essay on why Metal Machine Music was the greatest album ever made), I am finally back with a new song for the [...]
Japandroids, one of the acts that received our very coveted(?) seal of approval in the form of a spot on our "Top 24 of 2009", stopped by the "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" set last night to perform their song...
Just uploaded the Jimmy Fallon late night (last night) performance of Japandroids debut National TV performance of "Wet Hair" from their debut album "Post-Nothing". The band has also announced a slew of tour dates in Europe and North America. Check out JP's blog for dates/locations. Enjoy! [youtube=
A rockin' live set from the spirited duo from Vancouver, B.C. whose minimal garage-pop is as noisy as it is catchy. Japandroids play songs from the debut LP "Post-Nothing" and do a nice cover of Big Black's "Racer X." Recorded on 6/16/2009 - 4 songs: Crazy/Forever, Heart Sweats, Racer X, Young Hearts Spark Fire Sourced from: KEXP Live Performances Podcast
As I suspected would happen, I forgot to turn off my alarm clock last night, and was jolted to life this morning with far less than the appropriate amount of sleep. The Boys Are Leaving Town began blasting through my room, and in my confused haze I came to realize just how much the song reminds me of Sometimes from My Bloody Valentine (listen to it here ); as a big fan of shoegazing, this pleased me a great deal. The Boys Are Leaving Town is the opening track to the Japandroids [...]
The Canadian noise-rock duo knows that being called "shit gaze" is a compliment

One of the knocks against two-piece bands is that they lack variety in their sound, and that the music can become samey and repetitive. It's true that duos are often forced to work with a smaller set of sounds and sometimes the music can suffer. However, recent years have seen talented two person acts step up and make great records. Dodos , High Places , No Age and others have overcome their small lineups and created awesome music and it's time to add Vancouver's Japandroids (made up of Brian King on guitar and David [...]
The noise that Japandroids muster is not too far removed from what any band on the SST label may have spewed forth in the late 80's or early 90's.
The manipulation of wooden, plastic, catgut , animal skins; the wild distortion of one's voice; the practice of donning strange textiles when performing the aforementioned tasks–all are used as a form of "self-expression" by young people today. Our job is to figure out what all of the hijinks signify. Join UI as we Flashion Forward to a magical aesthetic land through which we coquettishly zip about the closets of our fave new interviewees and explore their closets to examine the physical and psychological baggage they pack their shizzle in–and ask ourselves important, meta questions about, ya [...]

I apologize for the two-day delay in getting this post up; I had planned on putting it up last night, but received a phone call from a friend of mine after work. 3 bars, 8 hours, and a 1am phone call to my sister for a ride home later, I found myself in no condition to write anything. Rockers East Vancouver is another track from the Japandroids debut full-length album Post-Nothing , released in April of this year. After making the Polaris Prize shortlist, I confidently predicted that Post-Nothing would cruise into this [...]
Vancouver, BC two-piece fuck-yeah-rock kids Japandroids aren't releasing their debut full length until August 4 (via Polyvinyl), but that hasn't stopped the hype machine from churning out positive reactions. The band recently sat down with Noisevox's John Norris--yes, THAT John...

MP3: Japandroids - Young Hearts Spark Fire MP3: Japandroids - Wet Hair I have heard the name Japandroids going around for some months now but I never got around to giving them a listen until last week when I was on the Polyvinyl website for some reason. As soon as I heard "Young Hearts Spark Fire" I was hooked. It's like all of those great bands I grew up with, but using the mature, adult mindset I am currently enjoying so much. [...]

The highly anticipated short-list for this year's Polaris Music Prize was released this week, viewable here . I chose to ignore this until today as I was quite disappointed that my prediction regarding the Japandroids ' Post-Nothing was completely incorrect. However, I am now over it and would like to highlight one of the artists that did make the cut this year. Deny, Deny, Deny can be found on Joel Plaskett 's second Polaris short-listed album Three . This particular version of the song was recorded live in the Fuel [...]
Vancouver two-piece Japandroids will release their debut album, Post-Nothing , this September ( pre-order ) through Polyvinyl and you better be first in line to pick it up. Most 90s-influenced rock leaves me with a bad taste in my mouth, reminding me of too many Midwestern bar bands that just can't seem to crawl out of the era. Post-Nothing seems to tap into something different - " gut-level concerns " as P4K puts [...]
(photo by Leigh Righton) Vancouver duo Japandroids have just signed with Polyvinyl Records and we'll all finally see the release of their third spazzed-out-rock record, Post-Nothing , this September. They'll be playing a few dates around town this week on their spring tour and in ten days, they'll hit the stage at the Village Voice Siren Festival. So, to get you in the mood for these local dates (and the festival ones too), here's the new single from the boys, "Young Hearts Spark Fire", a jangly, noise rock anthem full [...]
the year started with the most promising of the recent lot of noisepopsters, the pains of being pure at heart, putting out their first album. closer to the mid year, we have japandroids reminding us that good ol' noise is here to stay for a while with a first release of their own. if the former debutantes heralded a what may be termed a post-c86 movement, the latter is most aptly post-nothing , with its bubbling stew of garage punk too restless to stand posing and having too much fun to worry about anything else. in "young [...]
