"I'll apologise, as this is the first time we've had to kind of articulate the album. Although then again, you're not getting the stock answers as yet! 'The funny thing is, that we'll give you the same answer you got in a magazine last week.' I mean they're never exclusive or anything – it's not like a press conference, or anything. That's the only way it wouldn't be! Maybe we should just do press conferences from now on... Wouldn't it be great if it were just you? 'Erm, yes! Josh!'" There's not even a faint whiff of the [...]

DIG! | UUVVWWZ by Lee Adcock Why is song structure important? For a band, the structure maps out the sections in a tune so that each member stays on track. Verse, refrain, verse, refrain, bridge, solo, refrain. Boring, right? Not when UUVVWWZ (that’s “double U, double V, double W, Z”) chart out the tracks. This “avant-blues” band (as they’ve dubbed themselves) from Lincoln, Nebraska often careen to the brink of stability, and yet still cling to the rails of rather complex, inventive song structures. Jim [...]

Belgium’s Neon Cardboard self-released its debut album Eternally several weeks ago. My favorite track from the album is "Decay", which they recorded live in the studio. This track has elements of post-punk, indie rock, and shoegaze rolled into one delicious reverb-filled soundbite. All the fun of Foals, Sonic Youth and The Joy Formidable, with the speed and allure of The Stranglers. As Neon Cardboard has only recently emerged on the music scene, we couldn't find much online from them in terms of video material. Fortunately, we've managed to [...]

I got into Bones In The Desert immediately. The first day I heard it I listened to it three times back to back to back. I can’t tell you why, maybe it was the fuzzed-out searing guitar of the opener, "What Have You Been Up To", maybe it’s the sure-fire professional songwriting and playing but with a nonchalant attitude, maybe it’s because I was bored. Whatever, this record is fucking cool, like throwback cool, without being retro. Bones In The Desert is a collaboration between Jack Logan and Scott Baxendale. If you’re familiar [...]

Lightboxes - …and they knew London based duo Lightboxes is back with a new soulful rough diamond, their second song yet! …and they knew is a Bristol-ian downtempo minimal soul with swirling synths and stormy electronics that are leading into an ecstatic hypnotic reverence of a whispering vocal solitude. John Atterbury and Donna Thomson is the perfect duo that can express a vice versa neo-soul for the underground tale of the recent emerging artists!

This one dropped via e-mail and unlike the stuff I've been writing about this year it's got a little bit more of a rough edge. Odd Man Out isn't Essential Listening nor is it all that polished but it shows a hell of a lot of potential. Elwood Kuddles is kid from Atlanta who is writing and playing what he describes as "Mediocre Songs for Mediocre Ears" and doing a damn fine job of it. The punk ethos of this one is what keeps dragging me back to it and yet the only way I can think to [...]
DOWNLOAD The June installment of the Feel Bad For You Mixtape is up and streaming. The FBFY mixtape has entered a new segment of it’s life moving from a message board tape curated by Ms. Rockstar Aimz , of My Aimz Is True , to a mixtape put together by a collection of (mostly) like minded bloggers now curated by @BoogieStudio22. The Ajax Diner Book Club is my brand spanking new radio show in Northern Colorado. Hopefully you've been to a family reunion before. Remember when your parents reminded you about that one cousin-the one that was a little different then everyone else. And they wanted you to play with that bastard cousin. "Do whatever he wants to do, he has a hard time making friends" your parents told you in the car on the way to the reunion. I like to think that the Ajax Diner Book Club is something like the bastard cousin of Nine Bullets Radio. [...]

Lately I've been heavily into Glasgow/Manchester's POST, a band who play tripped out garage-beach pop. I love my garage vibes but when it comes to POST, they take the atmosphere to a whole other level of catchiness with dreamy vocals and hooking riffs. My favourite song off their debut mini-album Cavalcade would have to be Monument to a Lost Cause - a song full of vocals surprises and melodic jangles. We love this band and have a feeling you will, too. So have a read as AMBY spoke with POST's Graham Wann (we do love our caps lock) about [...]

Adam Klein has been kicking it around the Athens GA music scene for years. He’s released several solo records, including one filled with Malian music (that’s another story) but Sky Blue DeVille is his first with a band, The Wild Fires, and it’s easily his best yet. The songs on Sky Blue DeVille are dusty and wind-blown numbers with more than their fair share of longing and restlessness. One of the themes Klein includes in all of his records is a nostalgia of times gone by, either 10 years or a hundred, both in the lyrics and in [...]

Many things are discovered, formed and discarded through a process of trial and error – some things are pretty big in this regard (like the USSR and its subsequent satellite countries) and some are smaller (like our sonic pickings here from that part of the world)… This comes on the trail of our previous Post-Soviet playlist , which is also worth checking out for those who haven’t already done so. Motorama – Empty Bed [...]

The dominant narrative will likely go: Lucero's new mostly acoustic EP Texas & Tennessee is a return to "Old Lucero"-another batch of the chest-twisting hooks of "Raising Hell" and the suppressed sobs dug out in "Slow Dancing." However, I find the Old/New Lucero dichotomy uninteresting and unproductive. What I think is interesting is a discussion of how the title song "Texas & Tennessee" relates to a 1928 Jimmie Rodgers blue yodel called "T for Texas" which contains the lyrics "' T' for Texas, 'T' for Tennessee / 'T' for Thelma, the gal that made a wreck of me. " [...]

The Microdance is a London-based band whose sound is packed with spunk and manages to mesh much of what is exciting about alternative music in their delivery, mixing elements from the 1980s post-punk and synthpop to 1990s indie alternative rock, among the other styles their music touches on. You can find The Microdance at many of the same net venues that popular music types are hanging out at – Bandcamp , Soundcloud , Twitter , and Facebook . Expect their website’s launch rather soon. [...]

Mother Merey and the Black Dirt do everything right on their new album Down To The River . They are a boot stomper on the porch kind of band and that fact is clear from the first notes. They haven’t made a record that will appeal to the masses, probably because they’ve left spaces between the notes, they haven’t filled each song with over-instrumentation or a lot of flash, but what they’ve made is awesome. Mother Merey and the Black Dirt are a three-piece band from Texas but it feels like their music is rooted in the [...]
Fifth On The Floor , fresh off their recent signing to Entertainment One , have hooked up with Blake Judd to make a video for "January In Louisiana". The song is from their 2013 release, Ashes & Angels . Check it out:
We are all sinners, we know this, and if you’re ready to celebrate your inevitable journey to the darkness, then buckle up, shut up, and just listen to this EP. With their music, emotions, and words, The Bones of J.R. Jones have captured my soul – with all of the pain and sadness and anger and love that it contains, with the darkness and the light, the love and hate – so damn deftly that at times, to be honest, it scares me. They switch between coming at you with hellfire and damnation preaching their version of the truth to [...]
