DC REDUX UPDATE: British born 23-year-old Jamie N Commons soaked up some American-style blues and rock when he lived in Chicago for eight formative years, moving back to England at 16. Influenced by swampy southern gospel, the songs of Tom Waits and the dark bluster of Nick Cave, Commons serves up his own brand of down-home grit and spit with his debut U.S. EP Rumble and Sway (out now) , a sampler of new songs and tracks from his 2011 U.K. EP The [...]

Everyone has a friend named Kevin, right? Well the Kevin I know was talking to me yesterday and brought up that Jamie N Common's song, "The Preacher" had been on the The Walking Dead the other day to some degree. I had heard Jamie a while back, but hadn't been keeping up with him - well he's got a new set of tunes out by the name of the Rumble and Sway EP . The title track off the album is pretty killer, and the whole thing really follows suit in a solid way - give [...]
Today, we're getting over our Comic Con hangover with this special edition of Five at 5. Check it. 1. The Ramones - 'Spiderman Theme' Everyone loves Spiderman, ever since he was given birth to by Steve Ditko and Stan Lee in the early 1960s. The comic was turned into an animated television series which featured an insanely popular theme song. This theme song was covered by The Ramones on this album , where a bunch of artists covered their favourite theme songs. Great album, great cover, and great video. Check [...]

Corbin Cornett, better known as Amtrac , kicks off the week with a gospel-sampling tune, "Preacher." The up-and-coming Kentuckian has displayed a knack for quickly-spliced vocal samples giving way to grooving dancing music, and this song is just the latest affirmation of his talent. The low-end bassline in "Preacher" would make anyone on the Dirtybird Label proud, but this song is noticeably more upbeat than much of the tech- and deep-house being put out presently. Amtrac announced last week that he will be releasing a new track on three consecutive Mondays (January 28th, February 4th, [...]
Louisville's own, Amtrac , makes a heroic return this morning in surprising his fans with a brand new original mix - Preacher . He'll be uploading a new track every Monday for the next 3 weeks. Out February 11th on his The Scheme EP

Jon DeRosa's dark reflection on melancholic contemplation is consuming. Mother West LLC, 2012 7.0 / 10.0 With harrowing wry charm and late night desperation, Jon DeRosa presents a modern take on crooning as a tormented soul on his way through a bottle in the early [...]
A strong strain of pop classicism and a certain quantity of melancholy runs through this record. DeRosa’s deep, resonant voice reminds you first of Scott Walker and Richard Hawley but it’s not fanciful to go further back, to singers like Sinatra and Tony Bennett, especially when you hear DeRosa on his versions of the Blue Nile’s ‘Easter Parade’ or the LD Beghtol song ‘Who Decides?’ The literate chamber pop – ‘True Men’ references Robert Mitchum and William Holden and is the source of the album’s title – puts you in mind of Stephin Merritt’s work while the orchestration [...]
Bow your head to My Jerusalem’s bluesy, swamp rock on ‘Preachers’. The End Records, 2012 7.1 / 10.0 Described as postmodern gothic soul, My Jerusalem’s sophomore album, Preachers, spreads its swamp gospel in a fun, bluesy swagger. Led by the baritone of Jeff Klein, evoking Nick Cave’s spirit, [...]

Preachers is the second full-length album from Austin's My Jerusalem , but the first album recorded as full band. The album was recorded in just under 3 weeks with Spoon drummer Jim Eno at his Public Hi-Fi studio. The sound is driven by what lead singer Jeff Klein characterizes as “Post-Modern Southern Gothic Soul" with smokey baritone vocals with dark guitars setting the tone for what Klein says is a "darker record," but "a beautiful, comforting darkness." Slated for release on October 9th through The End Records , [...]

I love a smoky voice, especially when you drape it over solemn tunes. The latest tune from local Austin act My Jerusalem has that exact perfect vocal I look for, even including a nice little pop raise in the vocal during the chorus. Otherwise, the track treads the water with a careful guitar line, some light flourishes of instrumental accompaniment and a thoughtful drum beat. It's great to see an Austin band crafting this sort of music, which definitely seems able to escape the confines of our local scene. You can hear this tune [...]
Describing his band as "Post Modern Southern Gothic Soul," Jeff Klein of My Jerusalem prepares his quintet for the release of Preachers . Pick up a Free MP3 of the cut "Mono" on the next page.
Sydney’s The Preatures conjure an irrepressible dynamic, placing rock ’n roll machismo in complementary conference with some more graceful and sombre sounds.

In honor of finishing the Preacher series, I shall read no comic book today. Forever and always, Tulip O'Harre & Jesse Custer. Heart.

It seems like an eternity since Saigon's The Greatest Story Never Told came out. But that doesn't mean that the man who enjoyed playing himself on Entourage (in the acting sense rather than the hip hop sense) can't still pump out a new video from said album. The latest cut to get the visual treatment is the excellent 'Preacher' - the Just Blaze-produced ditty that calls out money-grabbing men of the cloth - which has been transformed into cartoon form by Nastee and 4wordProductions. There's a lot going on: police; devils; police-devils; [...]
This is a random, impromptu recording of a demo on a handheld recorder. I only mention this because it still surprises me. If only, all mastered songs could sound this good. It's befuddling in the best possible way. With that intro, I'll do my best to move aside and let the music do the talking. Run Like Rain by Preacher's Sons After the random recording, Preacher's Sons put it up on Bandcamp and that's where I discovered it and them. The simplicity shines through and I like to believe that [...]
