Vid: Dave Matthews – A Whiter Shade Of Pale

Dave Matthews -A Whiter Shade of Pale
Last week the Blue Man Group celebrated its 20th anniversary with a special benefit show for their Blue School , featuring a performance from the group's original lineup, and a special solo acoustic set from Dave Matthews . For his eight-song set , which leaned heavily on material from his solo album Some Devil , Matthews debuted this absolutely fantastic and delicate cover of Procol Harum's signature tune A White Shade Of Pale... Get Educated With Jerry: Robin Trower

Get Educated With Jerry: Robin Trower I am incorrigibly a '70s guy at heart. The music I return to over and over is the same stuff I played on my 8-track, in my Dodge Challenger with the two door speakers and the two huge rear speakers that used the trunk for reverb. It was like driving inside the speakers. Cruising at night or parking for a smoke at Buzz's corner, it was usually Jethro Tull, Genesis or Robin Trower. Trower was the lead guitarist for Procol Harum. But he liked to channel Jimi Hendrix too much and left the group to [...]

Holiday Creep : Xmas Gifts That Don't Suck

Holiday Creep : Xmas Gifts That Don't Suck Here's a grab bag of stuff for serious music geeks (and geekettes). Procol Harum : Grand Hotel/Exotic Birds And Fruit/Procol's Ninth/Something Magic Quick. What is the UK's most-played song of all time according to Phonographic Performance Ltd ? Satisfaction ? Hey Jude ? Wannabe ? Wonderwall ? Not even close. No, it seems Procol Harum's 1967 hit A Whiter Shade Of Pale holds that honor. Of course, that ditty (with its countermelody based [...]

Your Sister's (Record) Rack: Johnny Rivers

Your Sister's (Record) Rack: Johnny Rivers Going through my sister's record collection yesterday, I realized that my sister seems to be a step or two behind the so-called "hip" crowd. Remember when we reviewed the British Invasion bands who got psychedelic in the late 1960s? It's like she wasn't hip enough to latch on to these acts when they were emerging or cutting-edge, she caught 'em on their downslide ... know what I mean? Well, I think that's pretty cool - we've all heard their hits anyway. So in that spirit, today we will spin Revelation , [...]

Your Sister's (Record) Rack: Singles, Part 6

Your Sister's (Record) Rack: Singles, Part 6 When I was a kid, singles were the best way to get into music - that is, music that wasn't interrupted on the radio by some golden throat in love with his own voice. I kind of remember having some singles with the price tag still attached to the paper sleeve; those were 50 cents but I more clearly remember paying about 68 cents for a single in the late 1960s-early 1970s. And the first single I ever bought with my own money? "Good Vibrations" by the Beach Boys, in 1966. OK, here's an old one: Procol [...]

Your Tour Guide – Jethro Tull & Procol Harum

Your Tour Guide – Jethro Tull & Procol Harum I know a concert review from two bands from the 60's isn't going to score big with today's Indie crowd, but not many of posts do so why stop now? Jethro Tull is a very polarizing band kind of like Rush or even The Grateful Dead; you either love them or you hate them. Well, I'm fans of all three bands and I make no apologies. I've been listening to Jethro Tull since I was about 13 years old. I own everything in their catalogue. I don't know too many Jethro Tull fans to be honest, but I met about [...]

Music Review: Robin Trower - Twice Removed From Yesterday

Robin Trower's great debut has been reissued on CD complete with rare bonus track.

Procol Harum “A Salty Dog”

Procol Harum “A Salty Dog” Agruably Procol Harum's finest hour, A Salty Dog (A&M, 1969) was the last album with keyboard/organ player Matthew Fisher. Fisher's keyboards dominate typical Procol Harum numbers like "Pilgrim's Progress," "All This and More," and the excellent progressive rocker "Wreck of the Hesperus." These songs (all very good) are what you'd expect to find on a late 60s Procol Harum record, a slow paced, keyboard driven sound. It's the remaining tracks that push the group's resources to the limit and see them branching out into new territory that is often exciting and original. The album opened with the title track, "A Salty Dog." One [...]

Procol Harum and The Moody Blues Celebrate Christmas

Switching back to the classic rock versions for today, December 17th's edition of the Raised on Indie Christmas Song Extravaganza (sure I just made that name up now). You can't get much more classic in the rock world, today's artists touch more on the progressive and psychedelic scene, respectively. The first track comes from the English symphonic progressive rock band Procol Harum. The band is best known for their track A Whiter Shade of Pale. The featured track for today from the band is titled A Christmas Camel, and it is on the band's self titled vinyl record [...]
