London Indie pop band Pocketbooks are releasing their new album Carousel on 19 September on Odd Box Records, and this is a track from it. They say of themselves: "Pocketbooks are a pop band from London, combining melodic boy/girl harmonies, spiralling guitars and delicate pianos. They've been together since 2006 and have played shows across the UK, Sweden, Germany and the United States." Download "Promises, Promises" [...]

Promises Promises London indiepopsters Pocketbooks have an album released on Oddbox Records in September and this MP3 is a taster. The main course should be delicious if this sample is anything to go by. Their sound has come a long way since I first saw them perform about four years ago at the Luminaire as Promises Promises is a lovely swirling dust devil of soaring strings and girl group harmonies, set [...]
The Broadway phenom delivers a powerhouse New Year's Eve concert at Disney Hall.
Yeah, yeah. I know. Start the blog up again and then only a few months later can't even manage to eke out a post every couple weeks--and, really, this won't count either. It isn't that there has been no music in my life lately, but rather that life has been just too busy to find the inspiration to blog (no commentary on whether or not posts here in The Room are inspired or not please). Here are my excuses: I haven't picked up any new music in weeks and I haven't been [...]

One thing I have always wish I did better here in The Room is offer up a bit more discussion of different musical genres, particularly jazz. Sure, there have been the occasional post, but as I look back over the posts, this blog is definitely heavy in the indie-rock-folk-pop-etc. vein which does not necessarily reflect the balancing of listening that goes on here in the homefront. I think that is in part due to, at least, three things. One, I haven't found a good way to write about music that I have listened to for a [...]

You Should Know My knowledge of New Zealand is pretty limited. I know that they shot the Lord of the Rings trilogy there, and I know that the guys in Flight of the Conchords hail from the country. Add New Zealand band Die! Die! Die! to that limited knowledge base. The post-punk trio from the remote area of Dunedin has spent the majority of the last three years touring and building a reputation as being an impressive live act. After cutting their self-titled debut [...]
