Proud Simon's Anchors Aweigh is the beautiful blend of harmonica driven pop music you find in the happy moments of life. It's the paradox in the middle of the raging battlefield we call our regular everyday lives. In each of our lives, there is a story to be told. Some are simply more interesting than others. But, it also depends on how you tell it. If you use quick, energetic guitar slide work and a never ending sense of positivity through beautiful lyrics, than you might find your tales [...]

|:| Review of Proud Simon's new EP Anchors Aweigh |:| If Rascal Flatts took a cue from the indie world and stepped out of their cowboy boots, they might sound something like Brooklyn's Proud Simon. The supple vocals on Anchors Aweigh are orthodox Americana — no wailing, no rapping, just sinuous lyrics from the heartland that waver between decent and sub-par. The five-song EP seems to veer [...]

Normally, I would have put together an Irish blend, or soemthign to do with the second Friday the 13th in a row, but no- instead, I got up this morning at 4:30 am, went to my local watering hole, and started drinking beer. You see, to promote their St. Patrick's Day festival, the bar was doing some remote spots on the local morning news show, and wanted a small crowd in the bar. To get us in at such an ungodly hour, they baited us with free food and beer. It sounded like a good idea at the time, and [...]
"I'm going to be the last one left." Americana isn't Brooklyn's usual hipster fare. That's what makes Proud Simon a bit noteworthy. Starting as an impromptu jam session between frontman Brian Keenan and his cousin in the garage of a modest Rochester, NY home, Proud Simon has since packed up and taken up residence in Williamsburg. The band has evolved into a group of four who already have two albums under their belt. Two tracks from the band's [...]
![Proud Simon: Newspaper Boat [Video Review]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/1374559_lg.jpg)
Written by Fense Proud Simon makes overtly accessible indie pop music. At least initially it's clean, it's smooth - contemporary almost - and it doesn't push any boundaries. But as their recent release, Night Of Criminals continues past the first few tracks, they shed some of these elements. That being said, Proud Simon is definitely catchy and fun, as seen on their in-studio video for "Newspaper Boat". In a way, the smooth nature hints at an Americana influence, but it's [...]

Proud Simon's newest record is an ambitious two-act whirlwind of cinematic Americana-tinged indie rock. The two sides of the record tell the story of a single summer's night, the first a testament to workaday hope, anticipation, and revelry, and the second a descent into the darkness, where good intentions find endless obsessions and temptations endure. A couple of years ago I had become quite smitten with Shoestring Universe , the alt country debut release by NYC's Proud Simon . I've found that their sophomore album Night Of Criminals had taken me a little bit more time to form an attachment to, but now that I have, I feel that it is a significant step up for the band. The album is presented as a concept album of sorts, although the storytelling aspect is kept relatively dubious. According to Brian Keenan's official explanation, the album tells the story of a [...]
Once again I'm working/listening my way through a number of promo mails. Proud Simon is a 5-piece band out of Brooklyn, NY. There tends to be a huge diversity of music that comes out of what could be called the indie rick epicenter of the world. Proud Simon is no different with their Americana/folk/country style. Their release of Night of Criminals reaches stores on November 11th and while this is a little bit early, my experience with reviewing albums is best when I just share my ideas as if they were fresh. (Thanks to Team Clermont for sending albums way too early in advance). Anyway, I actually [...]

Aw yeah. Back to checking out some lesser known bands who deserve to be heard. Proud Simon got in touch with EAR FARM via MySpace a while ago and thankfully I finally got around to listening their music. Or should I say the music of Brian Keenan? The Proud Simon MySpace page explains: "Proud Simon is the music of Brian Keenan and friends. Experimenting with traditional American music structures, they create a whirlwind of sounds and stories." Indeed, they do paint quite a picture [...]
