If you missed experimental psych poppers E+ at Schubas last week or just want to relive the experience, the band posted a few videos from the gig on its Facebook page. E+, a Chicago group made up of members from Verma, Heavy Times and Disappears, conjures dark and mysterious forces while dabbling in distortion. E+ track "Substance D" emits a steady hypnotic rhythm and plenty of groovy synthesizer embellishments. All you need to do is sit back and sway in your chair.
of Montreal's latest album marks a slight change in sound for the Georgia psych pop band, incorporating more arranged instrumentation for a pretty classy effect. WATCH THE REVIEW
Heavy Hippies - Cheapdrugsfreelove by Al Lover Fresh off the Al Lover Bandcamp , here's a new set of instrumentals that combine the schools of hip hop, garage rock, and psychedelic rock. The sounds that come together on this thing are hard, heavy, and grimy. Tons of wailing solos, tarnished guitar chords, and lumbering beats. I also wanna note that Al is pretty great when it comes to mixing his sounds with the sounds he's sampling. It's almost as if the hip hop beats he's throwing against these vintage rock [...]

ellusive parallelograms Three reasons why you should break your Groundhog Day cycle and rock out at Panchos tonight... 1. Milwaukee pop rockers Elusive Parallelograms are fairly impressive in the way they can combine alt-rock epic-ness with sparkling psychedelics and infectious pop structure without it overwhelming the listener with its differences. LISTEN: " Intelligent Design " 2. I've got a fever for more spooky garage pop. And Chicago's Rabbit [...]

Most people are familiar with Tommy James and the Shondells through their impressive string of radio hits, but what few people realize is that, alongside said bubblegum classics, the band was busy laying down some of the weirdest rock and roll of the era. 19692s Cellophane Symphony is a beautiful case in point, and in fact doubles as an excellent gateway into the Shondells' discography. Few rock and roll groups have ever been adventurous enough to open an album of catchy, psychedelic rock and roll with a droning, ten minute space rock instrumental, especially when you [...]

Beats Per Minute !

K.S. Chithra - Indha Vennila by Finders Keepers Records Can't put my finger on this cut, one minute it's a p-funk synth lite-jam then it's string and bongo draped Bollywood but still with the funkiest little bass down just subtlety hanging out the back and then a drop of cinematic drama. You come to expect the unexpected from Finders Keepers , who are putting this out on wax and CD sometime in the year, till then you've got this to gorge on.

Sun Araw, M. Geddes Gengras, & The Congos – "Happy Song" The latest installment in RVNG Intl. 's so-far-so-brilliant FRKWYS series is one for the annals of weirdo music history: dub-pysch guru Sun Araw and likeminded astro-traveler M. Geddes Gengras (whose 2011 Stunned tape The Empty Space is still amazing , by the way) have joined forces with roots [...]
On the heels of one very well-received album (20102s Twin-Hand Movement) and one killer 73 for Sub Pop (20112s "Deer Knives"/"Tangiers"), Baltimore's Lower Dens return with a new full length and a heavy theme. The band's forthcoming release, Nootropics, is said center on the ways in which technology could be used to expand human capabilities. Hmm...Well...Ok, I'll bite. Indie rock has a solid history of human/machine concept albums (See Radiohead's OK Computer and Grandaddy's Sophtware Slump) and judging by the first single, "Brains," the inclusion of more electronic music elements, like motorik rhythms, into their custom blend of [...]

Bill Fay's is a name that has crept back into the underground consciousness in recent years due to some unexpected word-of-mouth publicity which has culminated in a series of commendable reissues of the artist's work. Going into Time of the Last Persecution , however, I was unaware of such recent windfalls and totally unprepared for what I was delving into save for having read a record store tag-line which compared him to Ray Davies and Bob Dylan, or something along those lines. Sounded like hype of the highest order, but I was willing to take a chance; it was [...]

I was a bit late getting into the Italian trio of His Electro Blue Voice , not really hearing them until I listened to their Animal Versus single on Batshit Records that came out a couple years ago. After that however, I found myself seeking out whatever else they had released. As it turns out they aren't the most prolific band, hanging around since 2006 or so and spitting out a single here and there, so doing so wasn't terrible hard. The release of this 12-inch, Dead Sons [...]
The New Honey Shade - Ozark Dream (by Mark Kuykendall ) Somewhere between The Caretaker and the Ghost Box aesthetic lies, Mark Kuykendall 's The New Honey Shade . Haunted melodies to videos of bygone times. Surely one of my biggest finds in the last couple of weeks. Ozark Dream is out on Scisscor Tail , Download on bandcamp . MP3 : The New Honey Shade - Sun is Elixer
Ilyas Ahmed & Liz Harris (Grouper) - Live at Aquarius Records (by Ronnie Barrows ) Don't sleep on the new limited collaboration 12" of Ilyas Ahmed & Liz Harris (Grouper) on S ocial Music's Record & Tape Club. Here's a teaser , I didn't know this was captured on video! Amazing session .

Northeast Texas heads Southwest F.O.B. can't claim the same sort of critical attention lauded on such fellow statesmen as the 13th Floor Elevators or Red Krayola , but their one record, Smell of Incense , remains an indispensable slice of Lone Star psychedelia. Much more commercially-minded than any of the aforementioned collectives, the band nevertheless reveals an exciting instrumental virtuosity and willingness to draw FM gold out of esoteric regions. Thankfully, songwriters Dan Seals and John Colley betray little of the sickening soft-rock aspirations that would later drive them into their roles as England Dan and [...]
Cleveland singer-songwriter Bill Fox is a bit of a legend around these parts. Initially known as the frontman for the power-pop band The Mice in the mid '80s, Fox would later make a name for himself on the strength of his two stripped down, acoustic albums for SpinArt Records (Shelter from the Smoke in '97 and Transit Byzantium in '98). His reputation would only grow when he was the subject of a feature article by Joe Hagen in the June/July 2007 issue of Believer magazine, where Hagen sought to find Fox and find out why he had given [...]
The addition of Steve Shelley to the line-up of Chicago psych-rock/kraut-rock band, Disappears, pays immediate dividends on "Replicate," the lead track from their forthcoming release, Pre Language. Rarely has the outfit come off so forceful and so powerful as with the Sonic Youth drummer behind the kit. It's not just Shelley, however, that makes "Replicate," stand out compared to the rest of the band's output. Everyone else (Brian Case, Jonathan Van Herik, and Damon Carruesco) feeds on Shelley's intensity, too. As a result, Disappears sounds less like the that group on their second release, Guider, the group too often content [...]

Jazz guitar great Joe Pass must have gone through some sort of acid-induced nervous breakdown (or the usual baby-boomer-style mid-life crisis) when recording this record in 1969. It starts off innocently enough, with the first few similarly named tracks on the a-side consisting of the usual nimble, solo guitar work that made him a jazz guitar icon. Somewhere between the last bars of "Interlude #53 the acid kicks in and Joe's all of a sudden backed by a full band and vocal choir that lands itself somewhere between Up With People and The Free Design; a poppy, trippy, near cult-like [...]

Always having their feet somewhat submerged in the pool of indie-pop, Reports have seen a gradual shift from those straight forward numbers found on their first album to what has become a noticeably more garage and fuzz filled sound for this second LP Dinamo Cambridge . The single that preceded this album a couple years ago featuring the excellent "Bill Wyman Metal Detector" was a pretty good indicator as to the direction they were heading. For those that enjoyed that, well Dinamo Cambridge should hit the spot [...]
