It's hard to consider Radar Eyes' self-titled debut anything other than a pop record. While Radar Eyes is an amalgamation of garage, psychedelic and punk rock, the band manages to tightly piece those distinct sounds together. The album maybe rough around the edges tonally, but it's crystal clear in delivering a melodic palette, which provides just the right amount of catchiness and accessibility without losing that rock and roll edge. While Radar Eyes touch on the acidic nature of Spacemen 3 or [...]

After a two-year silence, Hackney psych-rockers Django Django finally have a new, self-titled album due, on 30 January. The three songs below give some idea of what to expect. A penchant for discord apparently remains present and correct, such are varying styles of Waveforms and Drumforms ' trance-laden atmospherica and Default 's chirpy, radio-friendly hooks. That latter song also appears to foretell more of a mainstream appeal; this from a band whose furious anthems previously made for unconvinced first-time listeners and the hardcorest of devotee fans. The new stuff sounds excellent either way, and one thing's [...]

photo by ishootrockstars.com Three reasons not to put a bird on it and head down to Subterranean tonight... 1. Can you feel the anticipation? Chicago's very own proggy psych-rockers Stephen Paul Smoker are set to release its debut LP, Ripe Fruit , in mid-March. We previewed the first single, " Green City ," off the album earlier this week and the spacey, heavy thudding rhythms contained within are hopefully a great sign of what is to come on the full-length. To bide your time until the release [...]
Strawberry by Wussy Some odd and slightly kooky garage rock from the Cincinnati band Wussy. Though the guitar riffs and hooks on this debut album of theirs are pretty catchy, the personality of the group is what burns brightest. They've got a slightly oddball quality to their music that reminds me of Devo a bit on some of these tracks-especially "Pulverized." That's not the only sound they flirt with, though. The 11 tracks on Strawberry showcase a load of different influences, making it worth it to browse through the entire thing at least once. [...]

"Available everywhere January 6, 2012 - it's Ancient River's third full-length album Let It Live! Ten new songs, 38 minutes, fast, fun, & rocking!" A quick succession of releases doesn't seem to have diluted the Florida based trio`s big bag of quality tunes.`Let It Live` is a Wah-Wah infected Garage-Rock monster, a ten track audio wonder to satisfy any musical preferences - Stoner-Rock meets the heavy clasp of Shoegaze, head spinning one moment, peacefully horizontal in another. I`m picking two tracks to post, we`ll start with the fantastic `Let`s Breed` purely because it`s head healing properties [...]

psych, americana, soundtrack double phelix Lasso is initially John Tar Catlin from Kalamazoo and it's now expanded to a full collective - he was also member of The Go Rounds, we had featured earlier. The first tape by Lasso was a mumbling, wobbling, hissing country pop thing with lowest fidelity. But for the new album, it seems Lasso get an upgrade of musicians and in sound-quality. It's blown u [ This is the summary, read the whole story on Website ] DFBM Releases [...]

With a name like The P.Y.T.s , one would expect the Chicago quartet to be a Michael Jackson cover band. But don't fret, because the P.Y.T.s will get you dancing with their own special throwback sound. The group comes at you with its own blend of 60s-style, twangy surf-rock and sped-up guitar solo action on its recent Pop Kingdom EP. LISTEN: " U-Lock Justice ." [...]

If there was ever an indicator of how robust and healthy Chicago's psych rock scene is, look no further than this year's third annual Chicago Psych Fest adding a second day of festivities. Brooklyn Vegan Chicago revealed yesterday afternoon that this year's edition, dubbed "Third Eye Visions," will once again take place at The Hideout (1354 W. Wabansia Ave). Kraut rockers CAVE and experimental jammers Dark Fog headline on Friday, Jan. 20, and Saturday, Jan. 21, respectively. Also [...]
A new track from New Haven, Connecticut's own the Mountain Mover's. It's to be released via 73 this year along with two other tracks on the Car Crash Avoiders label. Two more 73s will follow in 2012 on the same label. The music pulled together in these songs are meant to showcase the psychedelic, fuzzed-out approach the 'Movers take in the live setting. The recording quality on this track, and the others featured on this single, are loaded with blaring guitars, peaking drums, and echoed vocals that get swallowed in the chaos. Ominous stuff. [...]
Click image to download "Crazy Girl" Sounds like: Wavves, The Drums "DOM - Crazy Girl" What's so good? Remember DOM's addicting summer party track, " Living in America " from last year's Sun Bronzed Greek Gods EP ? Well, this September, Worcester's own indie rockers released two new gems that verified that their sudden success wasn't just by coincidence. "Crazy Girl" and "Things Change" [...]
Click image to download full album Song: Damien Jurado - Nothing is the News "Damien Jurado - Nothing is the News" What's so good? Changing gears a little bit here - psychedelic rock is a genre we hardly feature for SOTD. But today, I'll make an exception. That's because "Nothing is the News" by Damien Jurado is fantastic. Reminscent of Ethan Kennedy , Damien's sound features soaring guitar lines and drifting vocals. He's no stranger to the [...]

Genre: LoFi Psych Garage Rock These days, it's hard to find something special on the thousands lofi-retro-garage-psych-surf-c ombo. Quiet Americans catches my attention with their wobbling, worn out cassette tape sound. It's sounds like some of my punk tapes from the nineties played like a hundred times on a shitty tape eating walkman with low batteries. So I love this sound as well as the rud [ This is the summary, read the whole story on Website ]

[Photos by acidjack] Thrill Jockey's band page for Arbouretum describes them as a "taper's dream", and they could well be right about that. With open song structures, a hard-rocking, Southern-informed psych-rock sound an solid dose of showmanship, the band comes off a bit like an updated, thinking man's version of bands like CCR and Lynyrd Skynyrd, and they play a hell of a good show that doesn't belie that comparison. The band took the stage behind a veil of smoke, launching into a brief psychedelic intro before hitting full stride on "False Spring" [...]
A new track from the band Crystal Stilts. This New York band dropped one of my favorite albums of this year , so of course I'm excited to hear the forthcoming EP this track comes from. The title will be Radiant Door , and it's slated for a November 15th release via Sacred Bones . This band's music has always been covered in an eerie, hazy, and Velvet Underground-esque vibe, but the hand claps and acoustic guitar on this track, "Dark Eyes," is an unexpected and refreshing change of pace. The song doesn't [...]
Center of the Sun by EYE Some long, winding psych and prog rock tunes from the new EYE album, Center of the Sun . While these guys don't exactly put a new face on this kind of stuff, they perform it with a lotta passion and attention to detail. Plus, a lotta the instrumentation is pretty friggin' sinister. Stream it above, download it on Bandcamp , and stay awesome.
Gearing up to release its second album in January 2012, the Devil's Blood are an ultra-melodic hard rock band with strong hooks and harmonized guitar solos in every direction. In a way, these guys remind me of the band Ghost a band, and I know many of y'all are awaiting a followup to their last album . "She" is the first track to officially drop from this album, and I was a little hesitant to dig it at first. The falsetto vocals are a little much, but I think the shoe fits at the end [...]

SINGLE REVIEW: This is going to be quick, easy and painless for you psych rock fans. Actually you may have never heard of them until now but I think you owe yourself this if you're a Black Angels fan to check this groovy band out. New Animal are from Atlanta, Georgia which is basically two guys Kris Hermstad and Derek Burdette, actually now I think they have fired their drum machine and have a drummer to drag on stage. Which is the only respectable thing to do. What may have started off as a bed room recording experiment [...]

[Photos by acidjack] Portland's Eternal Tapestry brought their heavy left coast psych rock to Glasslands this past Friday night, performing three long-form compositions of their densely layered guitar, bass, and saxophone (an instrument that seems to be making a big comeback lately!). The first two numbers came from the band's latest record, Beyond the 4th Door , but the final track, "Doing Your Own Being", was my personal highlight. With its eastern-inflected sax melody, the song is not only compelling, but rare. Released only on the very-limited-edition box set, Not the Spaces [...]
