I don’t listen to the radio much, but when I do, I tune into KCRW. Seriously, Los Angeles folk are pretty damn luck to have a public radio station like KCRW. I’ve been in LA for 12 years and for as long as I have been listening they’ve always done a great job at championing the lesser known. Not just available to LA types, you can stream, listen to podcasts and access all the archives on KCRW.com . Now with KCRW’s public system, Malcolm , all you up and coming producers out there have an easy [...]
UMD, y'all need to check this one out! The General comes straight out your backyard, and has been spitting rhymes for a band comprised mostly of UMD students, New Retro , for a minute now. I had the chance to check em out last year (and had a dope interview coming until our schmuck of a camera dude at the time lost the footage..). Anywho, The General finally came through with his solo project, General Public Radio . And his flow is on point! He brings with it his heavy live instrumental influences, which [...]
Sometimes the Spring season isn't as bright and cheery as it's supposed to be and post-winter seasonal depression kicks in. This angsty, psychedelia-tinged, shoegazing reverie of a show attempts to touch on that feeling, as well as the bi-polarity inherent in the start-stop-start-stop-again crawl of springtime, and the apprehension that sometimes accompanies the new beginnings, growth, and rebirth that occur during this time of the year. Plus, there are several tracks referencing the gaseous and incendiary sphere that we orbit, all the while knowing it will one day collapse and take everything with it. Beat City [...]

(photo by Keith Klenowski) The song is called "You Were A Kindness" and I can see why it missed making the album. Not because it isn't a good song, it is, but I would have no idea where to place it on the album. I'm betting the band had a similar feeling and thats why it ended up on the cutting room floor. Check it out for yourself below. The National - You Were A Kindness (Live On The Current) Listen [...]

Rack up another station for The Needle Drop play: Minnesota's WTIP . I know very little about MN, America's most polite state. Being in public radio, Garrison Keillor from A Prairie Home Companion has told me a lot of stuff, but I don't know if I should trust him on everything. The show is getting its start on WTIP at 4PM this Tuesday. Whattatime! Independent music on the drive home, anyone? Of course, your regular podcast fix can always be satisfied here, but there's something about listening to the show on [...]

I learned 3 fascinating things on public radio this morning
In the space of 20 minutes, I learned three fascinating things this morning, all of which seemed directly relevant to me and my concerns, listening to KQED on my drive to work. (I normally bike, but I have a lot of stuff to carry today.) According to a story on NPR's Morning Edition, autism may be caused, at least in part, by an interconnectivity problem between different parts of the brain. Â From KQED, I learned that one in every $3 donated to California state campaigns since 2000 came from a tiny group of just 100 individual and group donors who [...]
Everyone loves Public Radio
We're quite lucky in the UK as, despite the Tories and Lib Dems' best efforts, we still have a fairly decent public radio service in the BBC. America's public radio is also pretty good, but needs a lot more support, which is why they're spending a month celebrating their musical achievements . As part of the events, a whole bunch of artists have signed a love letter to public radio , as Rolling Stone reports: A group of musicians including Jack White, My Morning Jacket, Death Cab for Cutie, MGMT, M. Ward, [...]

Public Radio Release Face Time Video For 'Forgot Love'
Carolina indie rockers Public Radio have released a video for Forgot Love from their debut Sweetchild that features Apple's new FaceTime video technology. The group's new single is already reaping praise from industry press; their electronic melodies and poppy synths winning plaudits from many high profile music reviewers. Go211 had this to say about the release: "Full of pop hooks, youthful energy, and plenty of electronic / synth buried in the melodies, ' Sweetchild ' finds itself being a charming debut for these guys on Deep [...]

TND On KISU
The Needle Drop, public radio's most dangerous show about independent music, has a new station it calls home. It now airs on Fridays @ 10PM on 91.1 FM via KISU in Pocatello, ID. If there are any Idahoians reading this, what do you think of this? Will this hurt or help your state's reputation? Should I come visit? If I visited, what would we do?
