We're mere hours away from starting the weekend, and with the season finale of football over, we'll actually have to go outside. Luckily, there are tons of great shows, and many fundraising for a good cause, over the next few days. Let's get to it. FRIDAY SOFT SPEAKER The Brit pop-inspired Chicago outfit come out swinging with plenty of lingering guitar licks, hazy psychedelic rhythms and even some [...]
HELLO WORLD! So I decided to throw this post together for a number of reasons. First of all, I love metal (and other harder-edged music) and I've been trying to sneak it into my post queue here or there in an attempt to brainwash my readers into liking it too (even though some have violently protested). And second, I figured that I would occasionally cull a bunch of releases into one mega post and ironically title it "I Hate Metal." That way any of those who wish to remain untainted can know exactly what they are getting into when they [...]
Cincinnati's Mixtapes have been an incredibly busy band. In a span of less than two years, they've released an album, 3 EPs, and a split. Their latest EP "Hope Is For People" is one of those albums that just immediately puts you in a good mood the second it starts. If you're not smiling (or at least singing along with the whoas) halfway through, I'm forced to assume you hate fun or have no soul. With 6 songs clocking in at 11 minutes (and one of those songs are just an acoustic version of another), Mixtapes really hit [...]
Words by Brendan There are many adjecives I could use to describe Pet Clinic and their debut EP-talented, purposeful, confident, moody-but I'm choosing this one above all: energetic . This six song EP is the culmination of years of work and it seriously shows, with nary a second of filler, nor a misplaced sound. Even the mellow moments (of which there are few, mind you) have me on the edge of my seat or up on my feet. This is a band who knows exactly what they want to sound like [...]
The new album from Cloud Nothings, Attack on Memory , was one of the first in 2012 to make some serious waves. Right now it has everyone talking, and what they're talking a lot about is the return of emo. Now, if you're anything like me, you might hear the word "emo," and run for the hills. The genre may or may not bring back bad memories of those annoying kids from your high school, gathered in a pack outside the cafeteria, listening to those whiny bands who played on the radio and wore a lot of eyeliner (but [...]
I'm off and on with the Toronto punk band Fucked Up , but I give them credit for how ambitious and dedicated to their music they are. Recently, they released a series of Chinese Zodiac singles. These songs were released each year to mark the Chinese calendar and each song is long, but orchestrated to perfection. You can stream "Year of the Tiger" and the other Zodiac singles below. Fresh? [...]
Originally from Edmonton, The City Streets now reside in Montreal. Their pretty indie pop but there's a slight tinge of punk to their sound. Then to make things more confusing How I Pray throws in a saxophone. They have some free EPs released but their planning to release not one but two full length albums in spring 2012 named Sawdust and Rum and Winter Lightening . The City Streets- How I Pray Website
Sometimes it seems like Canada has it all: public health care, better maple syrup, and a plethora of damn good skate influenced punk rock. Ontario based Adelleda is the latest band to add to great canadian punk, and their 8 track "Herkimer Street" is 20 minutes of melodic skate bliss. While I realize that it's certainly cliche to compare a melodic punk band to early Propagandhi, I can't help but listen to some of Adelleda's riff's and be reminded of the Manitoba legends (hell, their song Implausible Denial reminds me of I-Spy a bit before I even knew [...]
Link Wray, who is considered by many to be one of the greatest and most important rock & roll guitarists of all-time, is a pretty familiar name with rock fans all over the world. The man practically invented distorted, fuzzy, and wild rock guitar sounds. He was one of the first, if not the first, guitarists to use the almighty power-chord. Pete Townshend has famously cited Link's importance, claiming that "he is the king; if it hadn't been for Link Wray and 'Rumble', I would have never picked up a guitar." By the way, "Rumble" has since been added by [...]
Off-kilter, ramshackle punk rockers Estrogen Highs will release new album Irrelevant Future on April 10th via Trouble In Mind . The first track to see the light of day is the unashamedly catchy I Wanna Be Tall , an economic, no-frills slice of melodic pop-punk that will stick in your head like the best kind of proverbial ear worm.. Download it below. a Follow @madmackerel

Wyldlife, East Coast New Wave, Self-Titled Album Release.
"Four dudes raised by alcoholic wolves. Fast rhythms and sweet melodies. Loud mouths. Leather jackets. Last spotted without t-shirts. Stripped down, New York-styled garage rock and roll that pays tribute to the punk and power-pop movement of the late 19702s. This debut album is for those who like to shake and pogo". Picture a steaming night at the Marquee , Soho, London circa 1978, New Wave/Punk kids bouncing of the walls to an amphetamine induced tantrum, a fabulous image from exciting times for pre-digital guitar based music. Teen Demon- Not Alone 7″
Not Alone 7" by Teen Demon Last month , I came across some of the most aggressive and noisy rock 'n' roll I've heard in a while. The band responsible: Teen Demon. They've got a sound that combines elements of punk, noise, and garage rock that I think has some great potential. Check out the four tracks from the outfit's latest EP above. Happy moshing! Especially on the track "Gold."

Gunner’s Daughter – Trust Us When We Tell You EP
Last year my friends in Gunner's Daughter released the hard-charging Trust Us When We Tell You EP and I totally didn't write about it. I don't feel bad about it (okay, maybe I do) but I didn't write about a lot of music in 2011. Trust me when I tell you (see what I did there) I'm going to get to more of the really good stuff (like this) shortly. So the EP is available for FREE via Death To False Hope Records so go download it now, then read... [...]

Video: Watch Noisey's mini-documentary – Steve Ignorant Plays Crass Songs For The Last Time Ever
Another day, another YouTube channel demanding your attention , right? Well, no, in this case - Noisey , the Vice Magazine online-offshoot that's entirely music-orientated - launched their own YouTube channel this week , and it's already got a hell of a lot more going for it than a million other YouTube music channels where people endlessly interview rock stars about any old nonsense they thought up in the five minutes before they switched their camera on. Given Vice/Noisey's impressive production pedigree, it's no surprise [...]
