Denver, Colorado's Weed Diamond have been making their way on to my computer for many months now. One of the most unique, and unexpectedly awesome ways was from Get Off the Coast's DENVER's Show and Tell: TV Themes post where Weed Diamond covered the theme to Pepper Ann (there are two other covers on that post by other Denver bands, and believe me all worth checking out). There's something about Stricken City 's sound that makes it so inextricably london . Not that it's a bad thing. I really like the kinda messy guitars and Rebekah Raa's quirky vocals. Songs About People I Know was a very good ep (with tracks like Small Things and PS being firm favorites), much more urgent than the new ep, Animal Festival , which is slightly more subdued, as though the band's taking a step back to contemplate this release from afar. Is it possible to be too sugary, too saccharine? Certainly not on this evidence. After the initial overload of sweetness, I close my eyes concentrating on the subtle layers revealing themselves, rich yet smooth. Finally when towards the end youre lost, lulled into an almost mediative state, the final burst of golden goodness hits sending the senses tingling. Say what you like about the music at Puregroove, but their Chocolate caramel shortbread is unbelievable. Citadels are a London based band who conjour up a perfect blend of spacey-synth-indie-electro-pop (could I have just coined a new genre there? Hope not). Instant comparison? Think Flaming Lips for the 10's. Their arrival is just in time to ride the wave of electro-pop (god I hate genre names), a sound that is ever present at the moment and looks set to continue to flourish in 2010. Can of thoughtAlice Gold might just be the next best thing in the haunting female voices family.Orbiter is the first single for Alice, who is part of the Fiction congregation alongside the likes of Elbow, Snow Patrol, Filthy Dukes and The Macabees.
