Did this show really happened on Tuesday night? All of a sudden it felt like a Friday night show. Went to a sold out show at Ritual. For those that couldn't get in, it was mind-blowing. Playing at the show: • Purity Ring • Blue Hawaii • Spaceandtime Noticed that all three acts were all duo based! [...]

Happy first of April (April Fool's Day) and Easter Monday. I was suppose to have a phone interview with one member of Purity Ring on my radio show . But due to rehearsing for the start of the tour, the interview didn't happen. So I had to scurry to make a load whack of songs to play for the one hour. If you missed the show today, have a listen ! Part one: Part two: Part [...]

For a country with relatively minimal amounts of jagged coastline, Canada's certainly producing some invigoratingly edgy music at the minute. In fact, I'd go so far as to throw hyperbole to the wind and suggest them there Canucks are, contemporarily speaking, just about the most refreshing artists actively out there. And Prince Innocence – the Toronto/ Montréal pairing comprising Talvi Faustmann and Josh McIntyre – go some way to becoming the reigning monarch of our hearts. 'Rama still prevails, though Golden Hour runs 'em close. The inevitable parallel, however, will perhaps always be compatriots Purity Ring though as Faustmann initially coos of [...]

Richmond Lam Canadian music is quite often equated with rootsier stylings - which to be fair we do a lot of and well - but we can also get downright trippy when the mood strikes and a couple of the country's finest exemplars of this are back with new records this Spring. Montreal's Besnard Lakes have completed the follow-up to 20102s The Besnard Lakes Are The Roaring Night and if the title - Until In Excess, Imperceptible UFO - is any indication, [...]

Win our top 31 albums of 2012 ! Read the original review . "Transcendence" is the best word in music criticism. Originality, precision or talent are all well and good, but if you're capable of transcending a culture with art, you will have an attention of the masses. Purity Ring came from a weird place. The Canadian duo emerged from a cavern of genres where experimental electro-pop, southern hip-hop, trap rap and witch-house intertwine in unconventional and off-setting ways. On their début LP Shrines , [...]

Is it early?!! It's that time of the year where everyone compiles their best of 2012 list. I do have my best of albums (Canadian and Non-Canadian) but it's still in a work in progress. For now I decided to make my list of the best live shows I've been to in 2012. Since it's 2012, why not make it a Top 12. There will be some of the shows that didn't take place in Ottawa but was simply "WOW!" when I happened to catch that show. So here is my top 12 shows [...]

Canada is known for loving their strong bier and the sport of hockey. Lately, I have been loving the electronically hip music that they have been sending south of the border through the airwaves. Purity Ring is one of these bands that has been making my ears go fully erect. They are out of Montreal and have been slowly seducing their fans by releasing a single here and there over the past few years. Their debut album, Shrines , comes out on July 24th but I was able to get my hands on it at [...]

If you have listened closely to the lyrics of "Fineshrine" you know some weird shit goes down. Ditto X 2 for the video. But weird or not, I keep watching it over and over.
Our deep admiration for the musical genius that is Purity Ring doesn't stop with their music. Behold the new video for "Fineshrine," the latest single off their debut album Shrines . The piece is yet another feather in the cap for the Canadian duo. It's haunting use of chiaroscuro paired with carefully placed, fantastical imagery highlights themes of pain, loss, desire and imagination. This is no happy-go-lucky video, but it stays incredibly true to the song. As Sean pointed out in June , this is without question the band's best [...]

get a little closer let it fold, cut open my sternum and pull my little ribs around you ♫ Purity Ring - Fineshrine I trading jams with a girl the other day when I asked if she knew Purity Ring she said she didn't but that it was a horrible name for a band. She insisted it was. Fair enough on never hearing of them but that kind of disparaging talk about these freak-groove masters just didn't sit well with me. Sure, she was just uninformed. She didn't know. But people need to know.
