We couldn't imagine a more appropriate set of visuals for "First Time," the excellent contemporary collaboration between BK producers Dre Skull, Purity Ring vocalist Megan James and Jamaican dancehall superstar Popcaan. The Daniel Wolfe-directed video teams our trio up with PUMA Dance Dictionary, who enlists a number of the world's best freestyle dancers to translate [...]

Using the same elegant set - lights and drums that appear to make sounds and light up when hit, giant puffed-rice-ish lamps - that they've been hauling around for the past year or so, Purity Ring's fairytale electro washed over a sold-out, all-ages crowd at the Vogue Theatre. Megan James' voice - a baby Liz Fraser to match their Cocteau babble song titles - filled the full room, while partner Corin Roddick bore down behind his knobs and keyboards. Speaking only once or twice, to announce the impending Souljaboy cover "Grammy", but padding around the stage to gently [...]

DANCEHALL DANCEHALL DANCEHALL. If we're being honest here, it's gotta be one of the more underrated genres of all time. Let me re-phrase that. The select few dancehall tracks that are straight fireflames are generally supremely underrated and overlooked by DJ's. Gyptian's "Hold Yuh" needs to be in every DJ ... Read More

Arguably, Dre Skull is most famous (or infamous) for his role in the transformation from gangster rapper Snoop Dogg to Snoop Lion, the peace and love preaching, Rastafarian, dancehall music maker. However, Dre Skull is far from defined by this collaboration working with artists such as Beenie Man and Diplo as well as managing his own record label Mixpak on which this record is released. This track is evidence of Dre Skull's diverse music making skills, displayed by his collaboration with one half of much hyped Canadian electronic music duo, Purity Ring . Megan [...]

The driving force behind Purity Ring 's siren sound Megan James has teamed up with Jamaican dancehall artist and Vybz Kartel protege Popcaan and Brooklyn producers Dre Skull for the track "First Time." James' vocals are front and center over a wave of synths and building tensions, plus Popcaan's feature adds a whole new depth to the track. "You will not cease from exploring" is definitely a great lyric on the track, and seems relevant to James as she strays into new streams of music, but lyrically, the song is very much in line with Purity Ring's sentiments. [...]
The Brooklyn producer Dre Skull started out making spazzy DIY dance music, but he's since become an unlikely hitmaker in the universe of dancehall reggae. And his new single "First Time" goes a long way toward uniting both of his worlds, with Purity Ring singer Megan James singing a wide-eyed, lovestruck vocal over Dre Skull's sunny pummel, while Jamaican star Popcaan jumps on to huff his way through a dizzy verse. It's a supremely catchy song, and you can hear it below. Read More...

Dre Skull is a Brooklyn producer who has collaborated with the likes of Major Lazer and Snoop Dogg (I'm ignoring the Lion title on purpose!). He has teamed up with Megan James, the wondrous voice of Purity Ring for a new track called "First Time" that also features Popcaan . It's a cool chance to hear her vocals outside of the Purity Ring spectrum and it works quite well.
It's quite unmistakably en vogue to go reworking contemporary R'n'B tracks at the minute and whether that be David Longstreth's Dirty Projectors giving Usher's heady Climax a mildly radical once-over or AlunaGeorge redoing Frank Ocean's Thinkin Bout You, the results can prove somewhat inconclusive. So when 4AD's Montréal duo Purity Ring took to Soulja Boy's Grammy in the wake of the awards of the same name, the jury was bound to take its sweet time about it. Of course elements of hip hop, post-R'n'B , and so forth all factored into the making of Megan James and [...]

It wasn’t a great start to the night. The crowd this last Tuesday at Union Transfer was a motley bunch of teenagers, yuppies, punks, and college kids, and the lack of common ground between many of the groups meant a fair amount of animosity in the early goings. Many people complained passive-aggressively (or full-on aggressively) as the room filled up and people started squeezing up to the front. (I myself got quite a dressing-down while I inched forward and craned my neck to get a better view.) To make matters worse, opening [...]

A year ago, two unassuming 20-somethings took the stage at The Barbary for a crowd of maybe fifty people. With a DIY backdrop consisting of a bed sheet and some colored spot lights, Megan James (vocals) and Corin Roddick (production) presented their in-progress project Purity Ring with a youthful vibrancy and hopeful exuberance. While James’ infectious smile was enough to animate the audience into a spirited sway, Roddick’s smart mixing and instrumental flair sent everyone in a dizzying spell. Here the genesis of Purity Ring was a diamond in the rough: unfiltered, yet incredibly talented. [...]

We're starting to think that there's a direct link between cold climates and an ability to produce perfectly formed electronica - such is the caliber of music that Sweden, Iceland and Canada seem to throw out in droves. Perhaps the icy deserted landscapes that characterise those countries are in fact teeming with subterranean recording studios, where unhinged music researchers pump young tykes like Edmonton's Purity Ring full of drugs - inducing unabashed genre blending and sonic brilliance as a result. Whilst Purity Ring may sound the METAL ALERT klaxon, fear not, for Corin Roddick and Megan James are [...]
![Purity Ring – Shrines [Review]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4408508_lg.jpg)
Is this the future of indie pop music coming out of Canada? Let's hope so since today is the day Purity Ring finally drops their long awaited debut album in Canada ( Last Gang Records ), USA & Europe (4AD)! With all the buzz surrounding them, there is a high anticipation. Funny that I pre-ordered Shrines on iTunes and I got the email from their people to listen to the album with a link to download it. For those that don't know them here is a blurb. Halifax/Montreal-based duo comprised [...]

"The album is ablaze, with James’s disturbing images irrevocably intertwined with Roddick’s soundscapes..." Purity Ring | Shrines Eagerly anticipated as the album that will cement Purity Ring’s status as one of the best new bands of 2012, Shrines does not disappoint. The first full length release of Canadian duo Megan James and Corrin Roddick is a haunting, vigorous testament to the talent that the band possesses. Featuring words written by Megan James but never intended for an album, the lyrics are reminiscent of a Tim Burton film, but the music ensures that [...]

Purity Ring – the enigmatic epithet ascribed to the post-dubstep electropop audiodream shared by Megan James (vocals) and Corin Roddick (production). From early 2011, whispers of this dark horse came in the form of the infectious U.F.O. “Ungirthed,” which toppled the indie blogosphere with its experimental flair and schizophrenic sampling, and “Lofticries,” the lyrical anthem of a new generation of late-hipster stoners. Over the next year, James and Roddick let trickle a carefully designed stream of tracks with “Belispeak” and “Obedear,” all the while touring North America with a premeditated 25-minute set (…), promising [...]

Canada is known for loving their strong bier and the sport of hockey. Lately, I have been loving the electronically hip music that they have been sending south of the border through the airwaves. Purity Ring is one of these bands that has been making my ears go fully erect. They are out of Montreal and have been slowly seducing their fans by releasing a single here and there over the past few years. Their debut album, Shrines , comes out on July 24th but I was able to get my hands on it at [...]

Finally settling down to a record for review whilst attempting to unclog the WC may seem an unorthodox move and indeed it's quite undoubtedly not quite one of the presumed many activities Megan James and Corin Roddick were aspiring to soundtrack when they set to work on Shrines . That said, it's a decidedly acute way in which to discern what floats and what, within the context of their Purity Ring début full-length, doesn't quite work. Needless to say Fineshrine, with its loveable, anatomy-inspired lyrics of "cut open my [...]
