Megan James, the Purity Ring vocalist with the uniquely confessional and childlike voice, has joined dancehall rapper Popcaan on Brooklyn producers Dre Skull's shimmering and summery new single "First Time." While we feel that any song featuring James' vocals is worth a listen, Dre Skull's synth alchemy sounds better here than it ever has and Popcaan lends even more credence to the idea that Purity Ring's music remixed by rappers would be awesome. Dre Skull is a Brooklyn producer who has collaborated with the likes of Major Lazer and Snoop Dogg (I'm ignoring the Lion title on purpose!). He has teamed up with Megan James, the wondrous voice of Purity Ring for a new track called "First Time" that also features Popcaan . It's a cool chance to hear her vocals outside of the Purity Ring spectrum and it works quite well.

Despite their status as an indie-electronic darling, the sounds produced by Edmonton duo Purity Ring are anything but. Their debut album Shrines is laden with dark, brooding trap instrumentation, and leave it to Danny Brown to take advantage of the rap-friendly nature of their beats. Labeled as the sequel to Purity Ring's "Belispeak" (note it's not a remix), "Belispeak II" sees Brown dropping a slew of dirty verses amidst the gothic synthesizers and rampant percussion. While we did get a new version of "Bad Things" with Freddie Gibbs , the mixtape never quite came to fruition. Now this is quite the treat to wake up to, as Danny Brown teams up with Purity Ring for a second take of "Belispeak". It never hit me the first time around, but this track serves as a rather perfect backing track for Brown to spray. It is a fairly long verse from Brown, and it even comes with an auto-tuned hook to match. 99 percent of the time auto-tune ends disastrously , but I think the Detroit Bruiser pulled it off on this indie anthem. Daedelus is a pretty crazy guy. If you've ever seen his live show you know this. If you haven't, it's him flailing around on his monome while he mixes together his equally insane beats. Purity Ring's "Cartographist" is a dark and lurching piece of electronic music, but put into the hands of an evil beat scientist it's something entirely different.
