Lateef The Truthspeaker has seen his share of action in Hip Hop music and culture. Fans of the late 90's and early 2000's West Coast underground scene will undoubtedly remember Lateef from his work with the movement's prominent artists such as Blackilicious, Dilated Peoples, and Jurassic 5 as well as the group Latryx, which he formed with Lyrics Born. His journey in music has been as eventful as it is lasting, seeing Lateef go through creative and personal evolutions maturation. In November, he will release a solo album, Firewire, which will be followed up by new music with Latryx. And [...]
As the co-founder of the hip-hop collective SoleSides (now known as Quannum Projects), Lateef the Truthspeaker has been an integral component of the Bay Area's hip-hop scene since the mid-1990s. The socially-conscious lyricist, who found success rapping alongside Lyrics Born as Latryx, is now bringing together some of the biggest names from his Rolodex to produce his long-overdue solo LP, Firewire . The 13-track album drops November 8th via Quannum Projects , and features Chief Xcel, DJ Shadow, Dan the Automator, Del the Funky Homosapien, and Lyrics Born. According to a press release, Firewire [...]
Lateef the Truth Speaker is an Oakland Born MC who was raised by the Black Panther Party, but that only touches on his interesting personal life. However, we're here to talk about his music. In the past Lateef has been a member of rap groups Latyrx and The Maroons, and he also founded the Solesides collective, which is now known as Quannum Projects. Lateef is bringing out his debut solo LP on November 8th through Quannum Projects. It's entitled FireWire and features he the likes of Del Tha Funky Homosapien, Dan The Automator, DJ Shadow and [...]
When I first heard Lifesavas around five, six years ago, I liked 'em so much I had to find anything like 'em. That group was Libretto or so I thought. For all these years I thought Libretto was a group, but now that I researched a little, I find out the 'group' was actually just one person. I guess it just shows what I thought a group of people could do one man pulled off. What he pulled off would be the funkalicious album, Ill-Oet: The Last Element , back in '04. Libretto's [...]
I haven't heard anything that breakthrough in hip-hop lately, so I thought I'd dig through my collection and find something noteworthy. Blackalicious, along with the rest of the Quannum crew, were a main reason for my first interests in hip-hop. Their West Coast, laid-back vibes made me rethink what hip-hop was all about. Nia may have been my first glimpse into the Gift of Gab's whimsical words, but Blazing Arrow blew me away - well, I guess they both did. Blazing Arrow may not be the [...]
I've been a long time fan of the Quannum collective, but never got into Shadow's work past Entroducing . Recently, someone over at DJShadow.com contacted me about featuring their new remix project - a compilation of remixes done by Shadow's fans - which should being drop today. My initial thought going through the album was that most of the DJ's did a decent job at putting their own spin on Shadow's music, but none really stood out. There's some that caught my ear, but most failed to keep my attention. So I [...]
Today I was reminiscing about past summers and favorite pool-side songs, when I remembered one of my favorite summer dayz groups, Latyrx. What the hell ever happened to those guys? They had two exceptional albums and then split ways. Originally, my favorite of the two was Lyrics Born over Lateef (the Truth Speaker), but as time progressed and careers developed the tables turned. Lyrics Born has shifted more to a pop sound, which is all in good, but not my thing; while Lateef has hooked up with the likes of Z-Trip, Chief Xcel and Blackalicious, which [...]
Solesides and Def Jux have finally released new information about the long awaited The Mighty Underdogs album Droppin' Science Fiction . The hip hop group, composed of underground heavyweights the Gift of Gab , Lateef the Truthspeaker , and Headnodic , will drop their debut full-length on October 14. We also now know all of the special guests on the album. Based on the fact that the Underdogs' EP The Prelude featured collaborators on just about every track, we shouldn't be surprised by the list. [...]

Lateef The Truthspeaker:
As we previously reported , Bay Area hip-hop O.G. Lateef the Truthspeaker is gearing up to drop his new solo album, FireWire , in November. It's set to feature guest appearances from longtime collaborators such as DJ Shadow, Lyrics Born, Dan the Automator, Del the Funky Homosapien, and the Grouch. Those last two fellow West Coast spitters appear on FireWire 's latest single, "Oakland," a fittingly booming ode to the Cali city. Lateef The Truth Speaker:
Over the years, underground hip-hop heads with a penchant for the West Coast have come to know Lateef the Truth Speaker pretty damn well. He is one of the founders of Solesides, which later became the acclaimed Quannum Projects, and he released albums as part of Latyrx with Lyrics Born while working with DJ Shadow and DJ Z-Trip. All the while, Lateef somehow never dropped a solo debut. That all changes this November, though, when he releases FireWire , which is set to feature the likes of DJ Shadow, Dan the Automator, Lyrics Born, and Del the [...]

Music that Got Me Blogging About Music (Part 4)
In the music that got me blogging about music series, we've gone from the Midwest all the way to Japan and all along the West Coast. Now, we focus on one of the most influential hip-hop areas around, The Bay Area. As small as The Bay Area is compared to any other area I've covered, it's definitely rich with the best hip-hop around. I could've made a top 25 bay area groups, but that would've been a little much. This top 5 (or so), however, is some of my favorite hip-hop groups of all time. [...]
