Tweet vaso link We talked about Mac DeMarco's previous single, "Baby's Wearin' Blue Jeans" last month sometime, noting that DeMarco's previous work had been with the band Makeout Videotape. Honestly, between that track and this one, his new single called "I'm A Man," it doesn't even sound like the same singer. "I'm A Man" is from the forthcoming Rock and Roll Night Club , which is due out on March 20 th through the folks at [...]

This is not a Ritchie Blackmore tune. Hush was written by Joe South for Billy Joe Royal in 1967, and only the following year Deep Purple recorded the song that became quite a huge hit in the US. Gallic cover king Johnny Hallyday recorded a quite lame French version a few months later, while Montréal-based yé-yé chanteuse Jenny Rock transformed the harmless psych/ bluespop song with the pushy organ into a sexy rollercoaster ride, fast, breathless, and highly energetic – a nice example that some songs simply work better with female vocals. No surprise that Jenny, [...]
![[mp3] Grimes // Genesis](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3975394_lg.jpg)
Tweet vaso link Despite an undercurrent of praise for her music that's been developing over the past year or so, I hadn't listened to Grimes prior to giving "Genesis" a spin. The Montreal artist is set to release her new album - her third, Visions , on March 12th through 4AD, and "Genesis" is the second single from it. (The first track, "Oblivion" was presented to the masses back in October. I missed it too.) "Genesis" starts [...]
Tweet vaso link I didn't listen to Colin Stetson's album from this year; in fact, I've never listened to Colin Stetson at all. And if you're unfamiliar with his work, prepare to be awed. Stetson's compositions are made up entirely of him playing his saxophone without any dubs or loops. It's impressive. "Those Who Didn't Run" is not from his album from February of this year; it's from an EP of the same name that was released in October.
Lonely Forest should rename themselves crowded, over-stuffed forest with the crowds they are drawing these days. We chatted. They're dope.

Canadian singer/pianist Béatrice Martin, better known as Coeur de Pirate , released her much-anticipated sophomore release, Blonde, on November 8th via Grosse Boite Records. This new record is bouncier and more upbeat than the young chanteuse's previous effort, giving plenty of room for seeping strings arrangements and jazzy big band elements. The first single is the lively retro pop number "Adieu", which you can sample below. Coeur de Pirate - Adieu If you dig this sound, check out Coeur de Pirate's collaborations with Peter Peter and Bedouin Soundclash [...]

Coeur de Pirate 's Blonde is a lot of things. It's soft, exotic strings accompanied by passionate lyrics. It's knee bopping beats and Montrealer Beatrice Martin's greatest exploit. There are obvious hints of influence from Martin's side project with Bedouin Soundclash frontman Jay Malinowski, Armistice . The quirky marichi band infusions on certain songs are tasteful, and fold into the piano, strings, and percussions gracefully, and doesn't alienate the seductive piano and guitar of songs like Place de la République and Petite Mort . The rolling drum and bass isn't [...]
Official Website | Facebook | Twitter Us Montrealers are lucky to have great show promoters in Blue Skies Turn Black, Evenko and Greenland. Something that was seriously lacking in the rest of the Quebecois province, especially on the indie music front and that's when Scene 1245 came into the picture. Located in the Laval suburbs, it was [...]

Let's just get this out of the way right now. I'm a sucker for anything Brad Barr. If he owned a diner - I'd let him cook me breakfast. If he drove a bus, I'd be the first one on board. The appreciation for his work goes back to 2001 when I first saw The Slip play Boston, but it really blossomed in 2006 when our group made the trek to California's best kept secret - High Sierra. Little did I know that the festival was basically a one-stop shop for everything Barr related. Surprise [...]

![Galaxie – Tigre et Diesel [Review] + Polaris Music Prize Prediction](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3730942_lg.jpg)
In the long list for Polaris Music Prize 2011 . This is one album that I had to listen to I am talking about Montreal's Galaxie with Tigre et Diesel. It's the only Francophone album in this year's long list. Being the only French band in the running. I feel like Galaxie has become the Karkwa/Malajube of this year's longlist. So in predicting on Polaris they have a 80% chance of winning. [...]

As regular visitors of this blog know, Canada (Quebec) has A LOT to offer when it comes to gorgeous, very talented female singers. Coeur de Pirate, Marie Pierre Arthur, Catherine Major, Fanny Grosjean (of La Patere Rose, she will release a soloalbum!), Amylie, this list could go on for a while. And now there's Salomé LeClerc . FS-contributor Maks was already infatuated by her (see here ), I can assure you that you will be too. I've listened to a few tracks on her album (out September 6), it's yearlist-material people. You must admit that first single Partir [...]

Earlier this month, Facebook friends of Mickey "Dean Ween" Melchiondo were shocked to find a status update from the guitarist that contained a two-disc, MP3-only collection called The Caesar Demos. Included were rough takes on tunes Ween recorded from 2001 to 2003 in preparation for what would become the Quebec LP. Only a handful of the songs wound up making the album, which was originally set to be titled Caesar, and most of the tracks in the collection feature only Deaner and Aaron "Gene Ween" Freeman. [...]

Some people object to playing music on shuffle, and I get that. Part of the appeal of the album is it's immersing yourself in a single artistic statement, and separating out the songs dilutes that. Or so the theory goes. Most of my listening is done in shuffle mode (albeit with ludicrously complex smart playlists), and what I've found is that there are actually artists who sound better on shuffle. The album as a whole might have a great sound, but the songs can't really distinguish themselves from each other. Sitting next to other songs of (sometimes radically) [...]

Escaping from the intense Norwegian house party that Todd Terje delivered at the Waldorf Hotel on Friday July 8th in Vancouver, we got our shit together (not really) and made it to the airport while the party was still in order to catch our 6AM flight to the land of poutine. Festival D'Ete is a huge festival (The largest outdoor festival in Canada) but highly overlooked by most because of the insular nature that Quebec "seems" to operate in. Now in its 44 th year, the music festival is extremely diverse in that it celebrates big name artists [...]
For this 6th edition (and first 3-day affair), I was only able to attend the last day. There was a snafu with my media accreditation application (try saying that fast 3 times) but kind lady in charge of these things was able to let me in yesterday so big ups to her. Highlights for me were Cypress [...]
