OvertureCon , an event combining panel discussions, fans-and-bands meet-and-greets and live performances, makes it debut this weekend at the Mint, highlighted by headlining performances by rockers Semi Precious Weapons on Saturday and Honor Society on Sunday. The brainchild of self-professed "überfans" Sabrina Greenwood-Briggs and Stacey Lawson, OvertureCon offers panel discussions on fashion, women in rock and DIY funding on the first afternoon. On Sunday, topics include new music discovery, touring logistics and "The Good, The Bad & The Ugly of Being A Music Super Fan." Each day's headliner will also be featured on a [...]
Queen Caveat has been around the bars and clubs of Hollywood and the Sunset Strip enough to know this dude’s game. With their new single “Mr. California,” the L.A. hard-rock quartet fronted by siren Lauren Little offers a pile-driving response to the artifice their home turf seems to breed. The video was filmed in the second-floor room above the Roxy, On the Rox, and the song is a follow-up to the band’s “ Slap on the Wrist” EP , an exemplary collection of straight-ahead rawk for fans who little a little grit with their [...]

Our heads are spinning already ... and two weeks of this to come: ► Madchester favorites James , with a deluxe boxed set "The Gathering Sound" (all 11 of their studio albums on USB stick, 3CDs, a DVD, vinyl and more — whew) on the way, play a pre-Coachella show at the El Rey Theatre. Elizaveta opens. ► M83 plays a sold-out pre-Coachella show at the Fox Theater in Pomona, with Big Black Delta opening. ► Reunited and ready, Refused plays a pre-Coachella show at the Glass House in Pomona. She can't erase her rage, and I can't erase their presence on a stage... from my mind, that is. Halloween and all the treats it has to offer came a little early for me this year. While attending a [...]

The rock band that started on the Sunset Strip was honored after 30 years (of questionable fashion influence) over the weekend. Motley Crue (Vince Neil, Nikki Sixx, Tommy Lee and Mick Mars) not only sounded as good as ever, their stage complete with fire and Tommy's insane roller coaster drum set up (with Deadmaus for a ride) had the crowd jammed so tight on the street, you couldn't move. Pictured: Public Enemy, Bush, She Wants Revenge, Matt & Kim, Cobra Starship, Jordan Cook, Black Veil Brides, Queen Caveat, and Tribal Seeds. Photos by Debi Del Grande [...]
Oh, Sunset Strip, you conflict me so. On one hand you are an interactive museum of rock clichés, Madame Tussauds with a pulse and a Flying V, a vast portion of your denizens seeking to inhabit the tattooed skin of GnR/Jane's/Van Halen. On the other you inspire a certain sense of wonderment, because the fabric of Los Angeles needs your leather, lace and spandex, and maybe even Steel Panther just for laughs, no matter what they say east of Fairfax. And because your clubs sound great. Now we arrive at this year's annual chest-thumping party, the Sunset Strip Music [...]
Judgment Day is upon us, good people. Great music? Check. Rapture Travel Kit? Check. Pearly Gates? Double check. LA's own Saint Motel's got us covered.
LA's Queen Caveat is an aggressive yet melodic rock band with a leading lady who’s no delicate flower.
[Happy birthday to ex-Drop Nineteens frontwoman, former Beantowner and current L.A. songstress Paula Kelley ... Now, on to the weekend's festivities:] Check out LA Weekly's West Coast Sound for my roundup of weekend outings. Here's a handful of my favorites in a jam-packed weekend: ☛ The Watson Twins , back from 15 dates last month supporting their new album "Talking to You, Talking to Me," play the Bootleg Theater. That's their video for "Savin' You," above. ☛ Helen Stellar [...]
