Sophomore albums are a tricky thing. For the most part I have found them very interesting to discover, especially when they are from a familiar band I have lost track of for a few years. Nothing here to put this outfit ahead of the pack It's hard to know exactly what kind of effect Canadian sextet Rah Rah are shooting for. Some sort of punk-inspired DIY aesthetic runs through the songs on Breaking Hearts - musical and (especially) vocal skill are at a minimum as songs careen from the heartfelt to the twee, incorporating an overly familiar sonic palette that relies heavily on hornet-in-your-ear indie rock buzz guitar. Vocals are rough and grating, and none of it is terribly interesting....

Some albums and bands are incredibly well suited to receive the remix treatment. Regina's Rah Rah and their album Breaking Hearts are not one of those bands. So heading in, one has to question the logic behind Rahmixes (out November 15th). Piling beffy beats and electronic effects on what are great indie pop tunes makes for a wreck of a listen.
