Kanye West came into the scene as this young-kid out of Chicago who could mix a mean set of soul and gospel records into an unbelievably infectious beat. Most notably 'infectious' are the tracks he did with Jay-Z , "H to the Izzo," "Heart of the City (Ain't No Love)," and "Lucifer," to name a few. Quickly, Kanye joined the ranks of The Neptunes and Timbaland in the producer world, but wasn't entirely fulfilled with the work. So, what was the young kid to do? He released an imperfect, yet intriguing mixtape, Get [...]
Big Boi joins in for a lyrical bludgeoning on Killer Mike and El-p's new track, "Banana Clipper." It's rare to hear the former Outkast member pushed to such ferocious extremes, but he emerges from the indie rap margins into which he's been flung with exceptional aplomb. The duo's Run the Jewels album is out for free later this month.
I was listening to some Little People the other day when it suddenly clicked that it reminded of yet another artist: DJ Shadow. Now, for those who are ignorant (like me, for the most part), DJ Shadow is a pretty big deal in the electronic world, having released the album this song is from, Endtroducing..... , way back in 1996, establishing hip-hop instrumentals (and, in turn, downtempo) as a proper thing in the music world. Nothing about this track feels dated either, which bodes well for downtempo in general: I imagine I'll still be listening to all [...]
I Immediately though of local rapper Prof (who also enjoys making some of the most ridiculous videos I've ever seen) when I started watching Action Bronson's video for his latest single "Strictly 4 my Jeeps". It's a witty video on the streets of Queens with plenty of sexual innuendos. Action Bronson has promised that his newest album will be out in early June no matter what, we'll see if he holds to that.
With the Nektones' newest tune, "The Wait and See", think Mayer Hawthorne but with a little more smooth jazz. The group brings in the talents of fellow Vermonter (yes, I had to Google that) Wombaticus Rex to break it down and add some hip-hop flare to the single. I had no clue what to expect when I hit play but the end result was satisfaction to the max. The track can be found on their forthcoming album Proof of Concept .
As Kanye has slowly gone off the deep end (just my opinion), Lupe Fiasco has quietly slipped into his spot atop my favorite rappers list. Lyrically he has always been great and besides Lasers , his production has always been crisp and original. Check the new release "Animal Pharm" from Lupe below. Can you figure out how many animals he names throughout the song?
Minneapolis local and Doomtree member, Dessa, has outdone herself with her newest single "Call Off Your Ghost". It's a very personal song written about running into an ex-lover and revisiting past feelings that you may not have thought were still there. It's the latest track off her forthcoming album Parts of Speech and it's due out June 25th. It will be accompanied by a nationwide tour with of course the first two stops being in St. Paul and Minneapolis. Unfortunately both of them are already sold out. You may want to start your Craigslist search [...]
I had the opportunity to see Sean Anonymous (with DJ Name ) last night when he opened for Heiruspecs at their annual scholarship show at the Turf Club . Needless to say I was impressed. The beats they were throwing down were crisp and had some great flow. The same thing could be said about his vocals, giving the audience plenty of opportunities to sing along. Sean is a seasoned veteran of the Minneapolis hip-hop scene. He's done work with various hip-hop collectives out of Minneapolis over the years but is probably [...]
Former local artist of the week, Botzy , is back with his newest single "Thrill is Gone." he releases this song at the same time as his announcement about his upcoming album. Buck Fotzy will be available June June 9th via Fake Four Inc. Check out the tune below and follow the link over to Soundcloud for a free download.
Here's a pop tune for you. Catchy and with two up and coming artists, "Make It Home" is the definition of a top-40 hit, something you woudn't typically find on MTIB. With that said, I liked the concept behind the song, hence why I'm posting it. I absolutely love when two unsuspecting artists come together to collaborate and this time around FUSE is helping in the process. With their new series, they pair two artists together and, given 24 hours, write a song and then perform it live the next day. Kinda cool eh?
"Warsaw," produced by fellow Doomtree member Papertiger, is off of Dessa's forthcoming album Parts of Speech due out at the end of May. The elecro-rock beat reminds me of one that you'd find on P.O.S.' last album, We Don't Even Live Here . If this is the direction that most of the Doomtree crew is headed, I think I can dig it. Give it a listen and let us know what you think.
It's been awhile since we've heard anything new from Childish Gambino and I think it's safe to say that his dedicated fans were beginning to get a little antsy. He's finally back with "Think of Me" that can be found on Funk Master Flex's upcoming mixtape. He get's real on this track as he talks about his character on television and paying the bills. Give it a listen below.
Hold the phones folks. I'm a little disturbed right now by the way people are crowning Macklemore as the king of music videos after dropping this new video for "Can't Hold Us." I'm not going to call anyone out directly, but I've seen other blogs and music sites touting this video as best video of the year. Is this a great music video? Abso-fuckin-lutely. Is this best video of the year quality? Not quite. In fact, I would argue "Thrift Shop" was a better video than this one or even "Same Love." Personally, I think a music video has [...]
I absolutely love what's going on right now. As much as I think Hov and B are at fault for going to Cuba for what was probably pure enjoyment, the fact that Jay-Z isn't going down without a fight makes for the creation of some great music. (By the way, Hating on Cuba was so 20th century, let's kiss and make up already. Maybe we could also take a lesson from their healthcare system. I digress.) Throw Common in there this time around and it's drama city. He clearly hasn't forgotten all of the hatred thrown his way from [...]
I probably shouldn't post any more stuff from Parov Stelar, owing to the 50 billion previous posts I've done on him. Then again, there's no hard rule on this, and rules are for saps anyway! There's not a heck of a lot to this tune, and it sort of sounds like that 'cool' soundtrack to some 'cool' dance video. In fact, I'm pretty sure you could slip on the parachute pants and go to town, MC Hammer style, and it'd suit just fine. Having said that, the bass line is too addictive to be legal, so I'm [...]
