President Barack Obama built his entire campaign on the premise of hope and change. Along the way, he's realigned the musical tastes associated with the leader of the free world, as evidenced by his love of hip-hop and Al Green and invitations to acts like The Killers and Yim Yames to play the White House. Fun fact: President Bush only had a paltry 250 songs on his iPod . In an effort to further play up his musical savviness (which undoubtedly translates to more votes in the Williamsburg region), [...]

Every so often a voice comes along that stops you dead in your tracks. Seeing that that I typically gravitate towards strong female vocalists, for a male vocalist to draw me in, he has to be REALLY good. Let me tell you, Josh Kumra is REALLY good. What about Kumra's voice struck a chord with me? What didn't, is a better question. Stirring, soulful vocals with plenty of rough-around-the-edges rasp and grit, reminiscent of a Jamie Scott (of Graffiti6 ) or a [...]
Girl, do we love us some strums from alternative guru Jack Penate. This is more on the acoustic route rather than the ska-alt that we got used to from him. Not really our cup of tea but any new material from him is great. This video directed by Dani Castro and shot in 1 take at his home. Filed under: Beats , Brit Brit Brit , Clip Tagged: album , jack penate , Laura Marling , new , [...]

Sitting through commercials is usually a pretty miserable experience. It feels like little sections of your life getting eaten up, 30 seconds at a time. Even the ones with good, home-made jingles are fun for a while but become increasingly annoying with each listen. Right when your favorite show reaches its most engaging point, you're left hanging and a flood of obnoxious advertisements rushes in, trying to tactfully convince you to spend money or to remember their convenient phone number so when you do finally decide that you need an injury lawyer or a gym membership, you'll know [...]
![Review: Zaac Pick, Whitewater EP [2011]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3932870_lg.jpg)
Zaac Pick is an emerging talent in the Canadian indie-folk scene. Former guitarist of the indie rock group Doubting Paris, Pick first earned critical acclaim as a solo artist for his 2009 debut EP, Fierce Wind , including the top selection in Vancouver's Shore 104FM Song Search, as well as spots in various television shows. Now, after two years of touring (including a double header at SXSW this year), he has released a new four-track EP, Whitewater . Whitewater shows off Pick's knack for melody, pairing his warm, expressive voice with layers [...]

BAM! Bet you were expecting a Best of 2011 list, yeah? Well I don't got time for that (YET)! No...this is where I acknowledge all the great stuff I missed in 2010. 'Cause it doesn't get any more rock n roll than to talk about shit that's over a year old. Write that down in your How to Be Rock N Roll notebooks. Anyway, the last time I wrote this list , I spent quite a while talking about how there isn't enough time in one year to listen to all the potentially great releases and put [...]

This post hits real close to home for me and I am extremely proud to bring it to more people. I grew up with Evan Shaw since I was 5 years old and in that time I have seen him blossom into something unimaginable. He has remained one of my closest friends to the point I consider him my family. It is a great feeling that I bring this video, shot and edited by his brother Dave Shaw, to you guys. In the First Snow Sessions from the pair, Evan covers Ray LaMontagne, "God Willin' and the Creek Don't Rise." [...]
This song was off Rachael's first effort "Rachael Yamagata EP," which inspired artists such as Conor Oberst, Ray LaMontagne and Ryan Adams to work with her. Not bad for a first try.
"You see, I love you. And love is exception-making." "That love is reverence, and worship, and glory, and the upward glance. Not a bandage for dirty sores. But they don't know it. Those who speak of love most promiscuously are...

Lisa Hannigan - Passenger By Jiten Karia As much as I love Damien Rice, I always found it a shame that Lisa Hannigan 's name didn't join his on the covers of his albums. Prior to the release of her debut Sea Sew , she existed in the shadow of Rice, playing off his often intensely impassioned voice with her own delicate and almost crystalline singing. You only need to hear '9 Crimes', 'I Remember' and 'Volcano' to understand the impact Hannigan's voice has on the overall feel [...]

Amos Lee - Keep It Loose, Keep It Tight "and sometimes we forget what we got who we are, and who we are not" I like soulful songs, I do try to be more diverse with this blog, but you probably can tell by now what my particular taste it. I love to have a good time, and go out and dance of course, so you'll see a good share of dance/electro tunes, but my heart is most at ease with the slow tunes. Even for bands that don't focus on the [...]

I absolutely loved Lisa Hannigan 's newest, Passenger , which is out today in the UK (check out our review here ). She was kind enough to answer a few questions for us on the album process. Make sure to catch Lisa on tour ! Is there a song on 'Passenger' that you're especially proud of? I think it would be 'Little Bird'. Initially it was the most difficult to sing in front of people but I took that as perhaps being a good thing. [...]

They Might Be Giants FRIDAY, SEPT 30 They Might Be Giants finally released its new album, Join Us , after a four-year hiatus from the adult alternative scene. During that time off, the band released two children's music albums; the genre is fitting for the New York City-based band, whose musical style tends to be unadulterated, feel-good rock. They Might Be Giants' songs have unambiguous words that get straight to the point with consistently bright instrumentals. The lyrics often have heavy sentiments masked in major keys, causing them to [...]

Grammy Award-winning folk hero Ray LaMontagne and the Pariah Dogs will be at Merriweather Post Pavilion on Thursday, and we've got a chance for you to win a pair of lawn tickets. LaMontagne won the Grammy last winter for God Willin' and the Creek Don't Rise as Best Contemporary Folk Album, and "Beg, Steal or Borrow" was nominated for Song of the Year. LaMontagne is notorious for both [...]

Ray Lamontagne Ray Lamontagne has three kinds of songs: sad songs, really sad songs, and excruciatingly sad songs. A few hours after his wrenching performance at the Central Park Summerstage last night, I flipped on the season premiere of The Office to see a pregnant Pam sobbing as she listens to "Trouble," the title track from his 2004 debut. (His songs have also appeared in the tearjerkers Rescue Me and Grey's Anatomy .) Lamontagne is an old-fashioned singer songwriter, the kind of acoustic strummer you might [...]

[Ray LaMontage performs with Levon Helm Band] credit: Fred Harrington Life is good 2011 wrapped up on Sunday evening in Canton, Mass. with the raspy, aching voice of Ray LaMontagne cutting through the night air and absolutely enrapturing the crowd of 10,000. His signature voice, sometimes haunting, sometimes reassuring, was pitch-perfect and filled the expansive grounds leaving festival goers with certainly one of the strongest acts of the weekend. Coming directly from the Raphael Saadiq set which literally left Prowse Farm on fire, LaMontagne and the Pariah Dogs [...]

And cue the collective sigh of relief (or remorse, depending): festival season is over. Basically. With the triumphant conclusion of Arcade Fire on Friday night, the 2011 installments of the "Big Four" are officially kaput. There are a few minor festivals here and there left for fall and winter to tide us over until next April in Indio, but by and large we've seen what 2011 had to offer. We don't want to get too sentimental or take the spotlight away from Austin City Limits , but it was a hell of a year, folks. From Dave Grohl and [...]
