Directed by Shawn Tegtmeier Phantods is keeping it quirky and catchy on "Creature" ( Donewaiting staffers are yet to discuss it ) which they just so happen to be having a cd release for on Saturday, November 13 at Skully's with The Receiver and Karate Coyote . (Separate Columbus list further down. Though, if the lists were combined, some of the local releases would unseat a few here...) 1. Larry Jon Wilson - Larry Jon Wilson I won't lie. Talking to Larry Jon and producer Jerry DeCicca (Black Swans) about this album, learning about its origins, and visiting Wilson's back catalog gave me a heightened appreciation for this masterpiece. So context helps, but even if you know nothing about the back story, this is a stark, beautiful album from start to finish [...]
MP3 : The Receiver - Skin and Bone This Saturday, Phantods will be hosting a holiday show featuring The Alphabet, Six Gallery and The Receiver. I caught up with Casey Cooper from The Receiver about his thoughts on the holiday season and the coming year. What can we expect for Saturday night's show? This is meant to be a holiday show for The Phantods, with each band invited to play a holiday song or two if they'd like. Phantods asked us to play a little while back. And [...]
Columbus band Six Gallery inked a deal with German label Superball Music (Trail of Dead). The label, along with label InsideOut, recently announced that they will be cooperating with Century Media Records and EMI Music to distribute their artists' music worldwide. The official press release will be out soon, but I decided to talk to Six Gallery's singer/guitarist Daniel Francis (former Pirate ) first. How did this deal with Superball come about and how much time has passed since the beginning stage? The entire record deal probably took [...]
Three Columbus bands are playing album-release shows on Friday night, and they're all worth mentioning/attending. At the Rumba Cafe, Brian Harnetty will be releasing Silent City , his second album for Chicago's Atavistic Records. This one again finds Harnetty mining the treasures he collected from the Berea College Appalachian Sound Archives, but this time Harnetty's instrumentation (accordion, bells, etc.) sets the tone for the songs. And floating above three of the tracks are the vocals of Bonnie "Prince" Billy. It's Harnetty's best work yet. Harnetty rarely plays live, [...]

These lovely guys (and girl) go by the name Parts & Labor , and they're from the ridiculously fertile music grounds of Brooklyn. Technically, their music is some mishmash of indie, punk and noise, but with their latest album, Receivers (released in late 2008), they've injected their noisy tendencies with some more poppy song structures. What we have as a result is a bunch of infectious songs coated in layers of fuzz and powerful vocals. But, then again, this isn't one of those trendy lo-fi bands popping up so frequently nowadays. The songs are intricate [...]
MP3 : Willis the Fireman by Flotation Walls Flotation Walls , lead in one version or another by Carlos Avendaño, have been haunting the Columbus music scene for what seems like nearly a decade. During those years there have been flourishes of activity and long periods of apparent dormancy. But one thing we've been missing throughout is a proper full length from these guys. So to say that the release of the Nature LP tomorrow at Skully's has been a long time [...]

MP3 : The Receiver - Lenth of Arms It really doesn't seem like three years since The Receiver put out their first record, but I looked back into the archives and sure enough, it was 2006 when we wrote something up for the release of Decades . So now, on the eve of the Cooper brothers' follow-up second album Length of Arms going public, it seems reasonable to ask how evolution has progressed during the time elapsed. Structurally, this is still the same band- the two guys [...]
When it comes to their music, Casey and Jesse Cooper don't do anything halfway. The brothers who make up local band the Receiver are perfectionists, especially Casey, the apparent vision-caster who handles vocals, bass, keyboards, synth, piano, programming and all the lyrics while Jesse mans the drum kit. With Length of Arms , the two have mastered the art of making a richly rewarding, sonically crisp studio album. Like the Receiver's 2006 release, Decades , this new record is meant to be heard from front to back, with songs that ebb and flow into others, yet [...]
Captain of Industry//The Receiver//Pretty & Nice//Roley Yuma-TONIGHT @ Gilly's
...well kids, tonight is the big show we've been talking about all week: Captain of Industry will return to the stage for the first in nearly two years, along with their friends The Receiver, Pretty & Nice, and Roley Yuma. In addition, we're very pleased to announce the winners of our Captain of Industry Mystery [...]
PROFILE: Captain of Industry [part 1 of 2]
...as we reminded you earlier this week, Captain of Industry return to the stage this weekend with a show at Gilly's this Friday, May 13. Our man Don Thrasher sat down recently to speak with vocalist/keyboardist Nathan Peters about the upcoming show... Don Thrasher: I didn't realize Pretty & Nice was on the bill. How did [...]
Captain of Industry Annouce Reunion Shows
...while we've been hearing rumors for a while now, yesterday it was confirmed that longtime Dayton faves Captain of Industry will play a pair of reunion shows in May. Following the release of their third album The Bronze in 2008, the band did an East Coast jaunt, then quietly faded out. COI's endlessly inventive twists [...]

The Daily Choice: Parts & Labor - Constant Future
What's wonderful about Parts & Labor (amongst many, many other attributes) is there ability to progress musically without losing the soul or general theme of their music. Constant Future, when put in comparison with their previous release Receivers, is a swamp of music. A layering of post-rock, space-guitar and devolved noise in to a [...]
