Look at the "About" page on The Fluorescent's website and this is what you'll find: a guy started making electronic music using a gameboy and a keyboard. then he got married, so he got his wife a synth too. they decided they should start a band. and they did. and this is the one they started. That sums it up pretty nicely. The Fluorescent, made up of Matt and Carolyn Jensen, is an electronic/pop/8-bit duo. All that the married couple from Kansas City, Kansas requires to create their beats is [...]

After releasing their sophomore album, Phantoms, in August, Ume has now released a video for the album's single, "Captive." The video premiered on mtvU yesterday . The Austin trio played at the first Kanrocksas this summer. We had a preview post before the concert and Ume didn't disappoint when they took the stage. They played early on the first day of the festival and brought the energy that we were expecting. Lauren Larson was a fiery guitarist, as advertised. The band is set to return to Kansas City on October [...]

The Ting Tings put on an amazing and energetic show. I wish I could write about that, but instead I'll dive into the tale of the asshole tour manager vs. the photographer who's fully aware of his rights . In celebration of the Ting Tings playing an all ages show at the tiny Record Bar , I took my 13 year old daughter Tori to witness such a popular band in such an intimate venue. In fact, the Ting Tings [...]
Better hurry and grab this week's Pitch. In the Pines fans are snatching it up by the bushel to read, clip out and paste to the walls of their children's bedrooms my Wayward Son column on the band's t... Continue reading "Slide Show: In the Pines at the Record Bar, 3/21/09" >

I always have mixed feelings about seeing a great band with an audience of under 100 people. On one hand, it's like an intimate gathering with like-minded friends. On the other, a definite lack of energy can be reflected by the band. Luckily for the small crowd at Kansas City's Recordbar , the North Carolina-based sextet Annuals maintained their intensity and delivered a string set, playing tracks from both of their EPs, 2008's Such Fun and 2006's Be He Me . When it comes to music, Kansas City is generally not listed anywhere near the top of places that matter. Sure, in the 1930s, it pushed its way into the the forefront of a booming Jazz scene but, for the most part, Kansas City has always been that city bands drive through on their way from Denver to Saint Louis. Tonight, however, the national focus was on Kansas City, as the band credited with changing the face of emo, Get Up Kids , reunited for the first time since 2005. Few realized how [...]

The Get Up Kids are doing a surprise (not anymore) reunion show this weekend. The show is Sunday night, November 16 at Record Bar , 1020 Westport Road in Kansas City, the band's hometown. It's ten bucks, but the show, the band's first since 2005, will more than likely be so epic and great that ten George Washingtons will part with you almost too easily. By FLANNERY CASHILL Hip-Hop & Hot Wings migrates south this winter, when it relocates from the downtown Peanut to the Record Bar. Final details are still in flux, but Beatbroker is optimistic: while the Peanut had charm, the Record Bar has resources, and with a stage, backstage, and PA system, touring artists can expect well-equipped venue and well-attended welcome. Akil the Emcee of Jurassic 5 inaugurates the first night at the Record Bar, alongside locals Deep [...]

Good. Fucking. NEWS. CUT COPY is coming to the Record Bar in our very own Kansas City on September 15. And they're bringing the Presets ! Guess what? I love Cut Copy. The Australian electropop/dance/rock group's latest, In Ghost Colours , has been tearing up my discman since its release earlier this year, and I haven't even been listening to much dance music lately, especially not of the New Wave [...]
