Day 2 of 35 Conferette I opted to skip most of the daytime shows (besides Dr. Dog) and instead headed into the night at Haileys to see the closest thing to a "punk show" 35 Conferette had put together this year - that being Leg Sweeper, Record Hop, and Japanther. Leg Sweeper got things started with their 2-man brand of Wavves-style nerd rock, its all partying, drinking, and girls - so I guess its the natural evolution of subjects the Beach Boys started so many years ago. This band has great potential to blow-up if they [...]

Maybe it's selfish to think like this, but I'm kind of glad this weekend's looking pretty slow. NX35 is right around the corner, only to be followed by SXSW, then Parade of Flesh's spillover show... Emo's has a solid lineup of local acts ready and rarin' to go for a night of rock on Friday. Acts include heavy rockers Lions , Ume and The Record Hop . No tickets will be sold online so bring $7 if you're of age and $10 if you're under. Here's that Ume song everyone is talking about around town called "The Conductor". A while back I went off about how I couldn't understand why Dallas doesn't have any kind of music festival . Well, it seems that my prayer has been answered...kind of. The good people at the Granada Theater and Main Street Live are presenting Main Street Live 2008 in Downtown Dallas. It is something hopeful to look forward to happening with the arts and music in Dallas now that Deep Ellum is being gentrified . It would be nice to see this thing get bigger [...]

Mudhoney, Record Hop, Melba Toast Granada Theater September 5, 2008 Better than: Putting on a flannel shirt and watching a collection of Nirvana and Pearl Jam videos. Even though each member is now in his 40s, the guys in Mudhoney rocked like seething, youthful beasts last night at the Granada Theater. Dressed more like four guys going out for a round of golf, Mark Arm and crew put on a powerful 90-minute display of punky garage [...]

Over on our home page , we've got two slideshows of photos by the great Hal Samples from last night's Dallas Observer Music Awards ceremony at the Best Venue-winning Granada Theater . Part I contains 21 color images, while Part II has a dozen black and white shots. I'll echo music editor Pete Freedman's sentiments about last night. I thought it was by far the best of the three DOMAs I've attended so far. The only letdown of the night for me was that [...]

Thanks to everyone who came out to tonight's Dallas Observer Music Awards! I, for one, had a grand ol' time. How couldn't you have? The performances were amazing: Doug Burr and Sarah Jaffe stunned; The Whiskey Folk Ramblers riled; Lil Wil repped hard ; the Best Instrumentalists killed; THe BAcksliders rocked; Record Hop deafened; and The Cannabanoids, they kept thing fresh all freakin' night long. And the winners? Plenty worthy, folks. Full winners list after the jump, yo. (Oh, and keep an eye out on [...]

Shiny Around The Edges has a great new track up on its MySpace page : a live version of "I Hover Above You", recorded at Sons of Hermann Hall back in February. But even better than the live version is the news that you'll soon be able to hear the studio take. The band's upcoming album is complete and ready for release, perhaps as soon as the fall--good thing too, as the band says it has sold out of pretty much everything else. Maybe you can start a merch-table bidding [...]

...and Nevada Hill's cover art is dope, too. You'll notice a very distinct Denton flavor in the front of the music section of this week's Observer . That was intentional. But giving Denton-based rock quartet Record Hop 's new self-titled disc a stellar review during that same week? That was purely a coincidence. It's just that it is a really good disc--hell, I already went on record saying it might be the local must-have record of the year. Download the track [...]
