Indie pop tweekers from Detriot, Daniel Zott and Joshua Epstein keep the Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. hype alive with the upbeat Patterns EP, their second major label release. The four songs that make up Patterns represent the duo’s ability to creatively mix excellent production and an all-out dance party. Their vibrant pop-songs tend to provide extra surprises in every bar, making for eclectic combinations that keep listeners anxious. The vibe of Patterns is ultimately a dance-able blend of pop styles with a disposition of fun. From the acoustic guitars that begin “If You Didn’t See Me (You Weren’t [...]
Keaton Henson's delicate, if arguably overly mannered, single Sweetheart, What Have You Done? was one of the best tracks I heard at the tail end of last year. Since then he's released a new album, Birthdays , which I've yet to hear, but I have found the time to dig out his back-catalogue, and I've been very impressed with what I found. At times the fey crippled-by-shyness shtick can wear a bit thin, and I've yet to hear anything he's recorded with being struck by just how whiny he is. Nevertheless, there's an air [...]

With many of us now having finally recovered from the frenzied music shopping spree of 20th April 2013, here is a slim-line round-up of releases and thoughts on arguably the biggest Record Store Day to date.

"There's a sucker born every minute" -- David Hannum Yawn...the last few releases in R.E.M.'s 25th Anniversary Deluxe Edition series have been extremely lackluster and the band's new EP, "Live in Greensboro", which is a companion piece to the forthcoming Green reissue (out May 14th), doesn't fail to disappoint. "Live in Greensboro" is being marketed as "featur[ing] a handful of performances from the Greensboro show that, due to space constraints, are not found on the [ Green ] Deluxe Edition". While the implication is that this EP [...]

By Danielle Gibson April 30, 2013 Record Store Day Update! We can gladly announce that the album sales for Record Store Day 2013 on Saturday 20 April were up by 60% on last year. So this means that it looks like vinyl purchases were even more impressive, rising 87% from 2012. As analysed by Music Week , the Official Charts Company have confirmed that nearly 70,000 vinyl records were sold in the week following the event which follows on [...]

By Cat Schaupp April 30, 2013 Here at Muso's Guide, we got pretty stuck in to the build up for Record Store Day 2013 . In between vainly attempting to reduce our list of desired records from this year's releases down to a reasonable number, we got chattering away to record companies around the country about their involvement with the big day in the attempt to find out what life is like on the other side of the till. In addition to being a significant day for record stores wanting to increase their [...]
It isn't exactly a shock to see news of a new Boards Of Canada album, not after they snuck out a handful of copies (literally) of a surprise single for Record Store Day a week ago for very lucky buyers to stumble upon. But news that it's available to order today has stirred up IDM fans and brought one retailer's [...]
Originally featured on Eaten by Monsters Hopefully it won't have escaped your notice that last weekend saw the passing of yet another Record Store Day ; the one day of the year when you actually have to queue to get into your local record shop, and the things you find inside cannot be found online at far better prices (or even at all). The dark, culture-forsaken wilderness that is Cornwall has a major shortage of indie record shops, and the only one that took part in this years RSD [...]
After admiring each other's work from afar for years, Moby and Mark Lanegan finally put their heads together on "The Lonely Night," originally released as a limited edition 73 for Record Store Day last weekend. The entire remix package was released digitally this week, including contributions from Photek and an edit by Moby himself, but the remix by veteran Gregor Tresher is the one really getting a full rinse on the speakers since its release. Purchase: Beatport You just finished reading Moby feat. Mark Lanegan - [...]
Despite all the fantastic releases to come out of Record Store Day 2013, the real point of the day is not the music itself but rather to support independent record stores. And with the highest turnout and sales since Record Store Day's 2008 inception, that was a huge success, too. read more

Last weekend celebrated this year's leg of international music shop love-fest Record Store Day . Now the sale figures are in and it looks to be the most successful year yet. Music Week report that album sales on the day (Saturday 20 April) saw a 60% increase on the year prior, with the average customer spending around £45 on the day. “Indie record shops pulled out all the stops once again to make Record Store Day UK a huge success,” said Record Store Day UK head Spencer Hickman on the [...]

This Heart Is A Stone [...]

In honor of Record Store Day on April 20, Snowstar Records released a 10 Year Anniversary Compilation , including nine new songs from their favorite artists. It's an exhilarating listen, starting with the stellar "City of the Dead" from Kim Janssen . The Dutch label has a diverse array of talent, so have a blast with their roster .

Another Record Store Day release that may have fallen under the rocks comes from Canadian noise rock cave minds WTCHS . The Ontario band released a double-sided 7", Thoughts On Air , which is also free to download via the WTCHS Bandcamp page. It's a claustrophobic, achingly harmonic two-track set that feels comfortable as a soundtrack on the edge of the world. Stream it below as well. WTCHS/Thoughts On Air 7" by WTCHS

For the 2013 edition of Record Store Day , Nicolas Jaar took to remixing both Grizzly Bear ’s “Sleeping Ute” and Brian Eno ’s “Lux,” which appeared on an exclusive RSD 12”. Of course, the vinyl sold out instantly. In usual fashion, Jaar takes his time in letting his work unfold, keeping your attention with a stream of sparse atmospheric noise. Perhaps in respect for the original, he allows “Lux” to remain ambient throughout while his rework of “Sleeping Ute” gradually evolves into a clean, guitar-driven beat reminiscent of Darkside, Jaar’s collaborative project [...]

Magnetic headed out to Amoeba Records in Hollywood this past Saturday for National Record Store Day to find out exactly what it was all about. In an era of downloads, iPods and piracy it was nice to see hardcore music fans lining up to buy limited edition vinyl and CDs from their favorite artists. It was also cool to see that people still enjoy the communal experience of the neighborhood record store. So much of our culture has become displaced because we "live" vicariously through our social media and mobile devices, Record Store Day reminds us that [...]

Surfer Blood have let out another track from their upcoming sophomore album, Pythons . “Slow Six” is an angsty alt-rock waltz reminiscent of the sound that made bands like Weezer and Built to Spill so popular in their heyday. Although the Florida based four-piece garnered accolades with their first LP, Astro Coast , the tracks that have been released from Pythons thus far suggest that Surfer Blood has really hit full stride. Stream “Slow Six” below. Surfer Bloods' [...]
