There are different types of bands in this broad and musical world. There are bands that play stadiums. There are bands that play festivals. And then there are bands that play intimate shows. They play because they want to make eye contact and emotionally connect with you. The Dig is one of the latter bands. Their sophomore release Midnight Flowers (from Buffalo Jump Records) wants to get to know you, and Washington, DC's Red Palace is just the place to hear them out. Midnight Flowers shows [...]

With an EP under their belts and a full-length on the way, JEFF The Brotherhood have hit the road and will be playing Red Palace tonight with Infinity Cat label-mates Heavy Cream . Check out Hypnotic Knights , now available for streaming on SoundCloud . Below is one of my new favorites, "Hypnotic Mind." STREAM: JEFF The Brotherhood - "Hypnotic Mind"

Time to cut the sleeves off your denim jacket and crack open a Bud Heavy. Nashville natives JEFF The Brotherhood are back with a summertime single, "Six Pack," from their upcoming album Hypnotic Knights . The LP is due out on July 17, but in the meantime you can check out four new tracks off of their recently released EP of the same name. Produced by The Black Keys ' Dan Auerbach, the Orrall brothers sound catchier than ever while still keeping their signature fuzzed-out sound in tact. Be sure to catch [...]

I’m always delighted when a live show introduces any sort of theatrics into their set. Seeing Quintron and Miss Pussycat live, you are not only guaranteed a rocking dance party, but a most charming puppet show, too! Opening for the delightful duo were Lenorable (whom I sadly missed, thanks to metro delays) and Heavy Breathing , who have quickly become one of my favorite new local bands. Quintron, originally known as a one man band, now tours with his wife Miss Pussycat and the Drum Buddy. The Drum Buddy [...]
Last night I went to the Red Palace to see Oklahoma-based band Other Lives. I've been a fan of them for quite a while and they have been generating some well-deserved buzz. The show was sold out and it was quite packed - they probably could've sold out an even larger venue, honestly. First up was Australian-based Wim. I knew nothing about them before the show but I was impressed. The 5-piece

Funk music is ingrained in DC's history. So much so that DC was able to create and cultivate Go-Go music, it's own blend of funk - a genre of music championed by the incomparable Chuck Brown . I'm going to go out on a limb and say that the Godfather would applaud what Big/Bright is trying to do. The band takes elements of traditional funk and combines them with distinctly electro and pop production. The result is a soulful groove that you can't help but dance to. The standout (and one of only a few tracks the [...]

On Tuesday at the Red Palace , Samantha Urbani, lead vocalist of Friends , stepped onto the stage and coyly beckoned us, "Come up here." The show was sadly in sparse attendance, a victim of a long weekend of debauchery in the District, cruddy weather, and the Tinarwen/AIH/DOM powerhouse going on at 9:3o Club, but I'd been listening to "I'm His Girl" for a month, love me some Ganglians , whom the Brooklyn five-piece had just begun supporting on tour that night, and was not about to miss it. [...]

Tuesday nights are hard for up-and-coming acts in places that aren’t Brooklyn. Friends and Ganglians aren’t exactly the kind of bands that sell out school nights, even in places as small as Red Palace. But despite a low attendance that was teetering on pathetic, neither Friends nor Ganglians let that stop them from having a good time and playing their hearts out on the Palace’s small stage. The crowd didn’t let it get to them either, even if there were only 20 of us. Friends began the evening with their Brooklyn via Pride Rock [...]

Youth Lagoon revolves around Trevor Powers on the keyboard, and at the Red Palace on Sunday night, he brought in a full crowd of devoted and youthful fans. Youth Lagoon also contains an unassuming, excellent, and intensely-focused guitarist. In addition to the two players, the show consisted of rifle-shot pre-programmed drum beats and a couple lamps with red light-bulbs. But it was all about Powers, who controls the attention of the crowd effectively even though he is not a typical or forceful front man. He does not carry the stage with power, but rather [...]

After a very good 2009 and giving away their debut album 'Reservoir' for a mere dollar, Fanfarlo disappeared to write the tricky second album. They resurfaced this autumn, first with the teaser 'Replicate' ( In the Post here ) and then the single for ‘De.con.struc.tion', released in mid-October. Both of these new offerings still sound like Fanfarlo, but with a twist, the twist being a look forward toward electronics. Over the last couple years, several high-profile bands have gone this way ( Keane , Editors and the Twilight [...]

The Features are a psychedelic rock-pop band from Sparta, TN consisting of guitarist and vocalist Matt Pelham, bassist Roger Dabbs, keyboardist Parrish Yaw, and drummer Rollan Haas. They play tonight at the Red Palace , and their new album, Wilderness , is available now. Rollum was gracious enough to share with us the first piece of vinyl he bought, his favorite record store, and the thrill of a bargain: "My favorite LP finds are usually things I get at thrift stores for cheap. It's a nice feeling [...]

Berlin-based 'classical meets techno' trio Brandt Brauer Frick appeared at Washington's Red Palace on a crowded gig night; Anthony Gonzalez's M83 was busy playing two sold out shows at the Black Cat ( review of the early show here ) and the Naked and Famous had sold out the 9:30 Club, a huge leap to the big time for the New Zealand band. So it's kind of not surprising that this gig at Red Palace was, in comparison, sparsely attended. The [...]

Fanfarlo hasn't released a full-length since 20092s breakout album, Reservoir . Despite that, the sold-out crowd at the Red Palace last Saturday was hungry to hear songs from the London outfit they came to love years ago. Fanfarlo's set kicked off on a familiar note, opening with a few tracks off Reservoir , including crowd favorites "I'm A Pilot" and "Luna". They didn't have to rely on old tricks all night though; the band brought out some cuts from their recently-announced 2012 release, Rooms [...]

Dominant Legs at the Red Palace here in DC

Tonight the Red Palace brings us two excellent acts in two femme fatales known for their live shows: Marnie Stern and No Joy . The former is a highly technical, hyperactive rocker who shreds like the gods. The latter are two face-in-their hair type of grunge rockers who would fit snugly beside some of the classics like the Black Angels, Dandy Warhols or even early Sonic Youth. One should expect the two groups to present their noise pop in very different ways: to be lulled into a drone-like trance by No Joy, just before having your face [...]

It's always refreshing to witness a down-to-earth show. While there's never a true, complete destruction of the audience/performer barrier, Megafaun consistently make their fans forget that it's there. If it was such a big deal that Daft Punk were Human After All , it was never a question for the dudes of Megafaun. It's easy to see that these are just a couple of friends and brothers who have an infatuation with old folk songs, gospel music, free jazz, and cracked-out noises. The earnest, heartfelt introduction Megafaun-er Phil Cook delivered for opener Matthew White [...]

Going to shows alone is so much better than drinking alone in the house of boredom, where the reality of just how insignificant your life really is, is crystallized by a bottle of bourbon. H Street's Red Palace is a comfortable respite from the insecurities associated with curling up to a bottle and a movie on a Friday night. The familiar face of your local bartender and a sold out show can curate the perfect evening for the solo show goer. For those who attended the [...]

War on Drugs. In DC. At the Red Palace. In DC. This show was an affirmation to why these guys are one of my all time favorites. They slayed

Caveman right then here in DC at the The Red Palace. Any and all buzz about this band is warranted. Really good!

When photographer Sarah Gormley and I arrived at the Red Palace last Sunday, the steady rain and August humidity made for an unusually quiet H Street scene, as if we were actually at a deserted movie set that had been abandoned during the recession. We were dismayed to have missed openers The Alternate Routes and Paul Dempsey due to prior commitments, but were lucky enough to arrive at the Red Palace just before Scattered Trees took the stage. The red-tinged room [...]
