The Black Kids and Mates of State co-headlining tour stopped through Austin on Tuesday night and we were fortunate enough to catch the show. Black Kids played Webster Hall (opening for Mates of State ) last week and PopWreckoning was there to check it out. The place was packed and, according to the chatter around me, it was as much for Black Kids as it was for Mates of State, which is pretty exciting for an indie band from Jacksonville that no one had really heard of prior to, oh, uh, last year. So I'll be honest, when the Black Kids released their debut album , Partie Traumatic (love the name), earlier this year, I wasn't all that impressed, despite the rave reviews and love from all the cool kids [ Ed. The Black Kids might not bother with another record, because it's too much like hard work , complains Reggie Youngblood: "I don't know if there's going to be a second record. If anything, [performing] has hindered my songwriting because I'm used to writing on my own pace, at my leisure, or while I'm supposed to be working a proper job. I don't really have time to sit down. When I'm not performing, I'm usually really tired and just want to sleep." So it's that, then, and not the way that everyone was being simply beastly [...]
