On the face of it, the Hoxton Square Bar & Kitchen may not sound like the place to host your band’s Christmas show but its culinary reference is apt as Tuesday night’s fare offered a feast of contrasting independent music. The fashionable venue where North meets East London was suitably full as sufficient souls eschewed the dubious delights of competing office parties for some real live sounds. Playing songs from her debut album, Silvern , Jess Bryant was first on the menu. The youthful, pretty singer intrigued with her gentle jazz-inflected meanderings. Aided by a [...]
The latest outing from Britain's biting Folk-Rockers, REVERE, is the first single to be released from an as-yet-unnamed album (released 2013) that signals their sound moving to an overall more urgent and grittier direction. The video itself is a fun watch, complete with Shining-esque 'creepy kid', sparse post-apocalyptic warehouse backdrops, and generally eerie "holy shit the [...]
Ahhh, sorry bros ... no new musics today ... PSYCHE! I totally had you going there for sec! You were getting all torn up inside thinking about a sad, sad Tuesday without good ol' Shanny's wussy recs and off-base comparisons. Well, fret not amigo! Read the colorful bevy of tech-death, synth-rock, and nerderific thrash-prog that [...]

Sometimes even the finest songs can wilt under the pressure of overfamiliarity. Joy Division’s most popular work ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’ has surely suffered the fate of one too many earnest DJs attempting an easy bit of reflected cool by giving the doom-laden Mancunians another airing. Thankfully for fans of the song, Revere have recorded a spanking new acoustic version with none other than the legendary Malian kora player Toumani Diabate. The song is transformed into a delicate acoustic piece, its dynamics turned from a stark, nihilistic edge-of-sanity documetary, [...]
Bands doing covers is a risky game. There's every chance - nay, likelihood - that they'll make something that either sounds too similar, too twee or just naff. Luckily here we have two bands who have done it right. First up is a cover of Joy Division's 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' by Revere featuring Toumani Diabaté. The original song is melancholic enough, but these guys have turned into something almost haunting. The simple, acoustic instrumentation allows the vocals to really come to the fore in a way that they don't in the original. And the Cello, oh the Cello! [...]
Cargo's interior feels like an air-raid shelter; or, at least what I imagine an air-raid shelter to be like. Set under a disused railway bridge in East London, it's a strange mixture of Dickensian and avant-garde. With a red brick, arched ceiling and cold stone floor, the room doesn’t immediately suggest great acoustics. Imposingly wide ventilation tubes hang to either side of the ceiling, and the sound booth is an even greater oddity. This hefty, box-like construction appears to be stuck to the back wall by the ceiling, taking up about half the wall width. The remaining space hosts a [...]

You must have heard that Give Up The Ghost né American Nightmare reformed for two shows in the USA late in 2011, right? Maybe not. . It was a very exciting announcement, by all accounts. AN/GUTG are one of the seminal hardcore bands of the past decade and if you've never heard about them, here's Tom Doyle telling you why and how you should and could . Luckily, our man on the ground on the Eastern Seaboard, or whatever those Yanks call the Greater New York area (maybe that?) was there. Yeah, [...]
Detroit's Reverence has issued the following update about recording new material for an upcoming album: "We recorded all Doc's drums, Frank's bass tracks, Bryan's guitar rhythm tracks, all Pete's lead and rhythm guitar tracks. So all that is left is, Bryan's leads and Todd's vocals which all should be done by the holidays." The band has also ... Read More/Discuss on Metal Underground.com
IamG comes thru with the second single off his upcoming EP Days In A Haze featuring Chuck Revere, and Chop on the boards, {FYI} the same guy that produced 'The Creep' from the SNL Lonely Island guys and Nicki Minaj, which was pretty hilarious. As for the single: straight up club banger that comes in perfect time [...]
Reverence, which features members of Tokyo Blade, Savatage, and Crimson Glory, has checked in with the following announcement about gearing up to enter the studio in October: "Great news! We have finally completed the re-writing sessions which took some extra time but will be well worth the wait, with their debut albums being so highly antici... Dance music doesn't really get the critical acclaim that rap and rock do, most likely because the majority of dance is made by pop stars with non-sensical lyrics, designed specifically for drunken people in tiny clubs. This though, this is ... Continue reading
I only wish the first blog post I'll write when coming back from vacay wouldn't be this one. So sad, yet so predictable, Amy Winehouse is now 'officially' gone. What will remain, way behind the trials and tribulations of her short-lived, yet extraordinary career, is that voice. Often imitated, never duplicated. Here is my selection of live performances from a stunning vocalist, an iconic figure who was an inspiration for many (and even had the opportunity to design her own clothing line for Fred Perry last year), a legend gone [...]

I’ve always felt that I ought to collect something. One’s collection is part of his identity. People collect autographs or coins, or figurines, baseball cards, snow globes, seashells, ornaments; all items you can’t actually use, but offer some sort of intrinsic pleasure in their ownership alone. For a while, I thought I collected books, but one can’t really count books as a collection unless they are specific, such as out of print, rare books on American colonialism. I don’t collect books any more than a person can collect clothes or food. I am a reader. Also a dresser and an [...]

(Self Released, 2011) RIYL = Stars of the Lid, Eluvium, Chihei Hatakeyama For those in need of calming / beauty, this tendered my inbox this morning. The effort here is to passenger a warm ghost inside you and slowly to let the spectral weight of its body bleed out. I feel like I haven’t been listening to much of the dreamy stuff lately, so Revere seems a nice reminder. A brief but pleasant bundle of silken drones fit to placate the mind and pacify the spirit. And freely downloadable. [...]

Seeing as I'm living in the Netherlands at the moment, why not feature a Dutch band? The Black Atlantic are a four piece band originally from Groningen fronted by Geert van der Velde. Reverence For Fallen Trees was their debut album released as a free download back in the late summer of 2009. The album was recorded in a cabin in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York and then finally put together back in the Netherlands in Zwolle. Reverence for Fallen Trees feels like autumn music, stripped back [...]
![Fishboy: Alyson Revere [Video]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3434939_lg.jpg)
Oh Fishboy, you never fail to amuse. We interviewed Fishboy's Eric Michener a few months back about his new LP, Classic Creeps , which finally came out this week. Yeah, we've been rocking to it since January and can contest to its total awesomeness. Well, in celebration of the release, Michener, aka Fishboy, put together a video for the album's fifth song, "Alyson Revere", and it goes a little something like this... Eric, dancing awkwardly like the dork he (err... we) is (are), [...]
Two days ago I liked Fishboy's Classic Creeps. Then I saw the video and it rose a bit in my esteem. The big breaking point was when I finally visited ClassicCreeps.com and read the whole album explained in comic form. Now I love Classic Creeps. Eric is a wildly talented dude and it shows in [...]

It's been kept fairly under wraps, reason for that of course being to make it all the more of a surprise and of course having nothing to do with our tardiness... Without further ado, we are proud to present HMCMB's Exam Mixtape! Unforunately we 3 HMCMB musketeers now find ourselves very much in the midst of exam season. With the spectre of said exams looming over our shoulder it's more than likely, sadly, that the frequency of posts will decrease. That is of course a fairly lamentable situation and as such we'd like to lessen the blow for [...]

Whilst traversing around Austin with Valentiger - there was an opportunity to catch Chris Bathgate as well as a couple of other bands including The Black Atlantic . Upon returning home - this has been constantly playing in the headphones. Especially during these dreary MidWest April days. It is HIGHLY recommended. And is currently available under the 'Name Your Price' model over @ their BandCamp page . Reverence for Fallen Trees by The Black Atlantic About the album Reverence For Fallen Trees [...]
