Old 97's frontman offers forth a set of covers to celebrate the venerable L.A. club Largo. Best known as the frontman for alt-country stalwarts Old 97's, Rhett Miller has been unassumingly making great music for about 18 years now. An adept songwriter whose keen mind illuminates the plight of various hard-luck lost souls with clever word play and deft turns of phrase, Miller makes a strong first impression, with songs burrowing themselves into your psyche and staying there for long periods of time. In contrast to annoying earworms that lodge in...

I discovered At the Drive-In by accident. Jim Ward , one of ATDI's founding members, was opening for Rhett Miller a few years ago at the Black Cat (you can see the shots from it here ). It was one of those "get there early/fall in love with the opener you know nothing about" instances that I love. Ward played with this incredible combination of delicacy and metric ton of power that I was dumbfounded. I can count on one hand the number of musicians playing acoustic guitar and singing that have held [...]

There's a lot of history in Rhett Miller's The Interpreter: Live at Largo . The new set, recorded at Largo's former Fairfax location - the best concert venue I've ever been to, R.I.P. - during its final days, finds the Old '97s singer laying into covers of the Pixies, the Kinks and more, but you'll want to skip to his impassioned take on Elliott Smith's "Happiness." Smith himself was a Largo regular in his early days in Los Angeles, of course: his only official live release, available with Autumn de Wilde's wonderful book , was also recorded there. [...]

Rachael Yamagata wants to offer us more of her moody balladeering on this one, but this time with a more mainstream twist. This pledge-backed album is set to make Rachael Yamagata a household name. Chesapeake is the record Yamagata always wanted to make.
